Bridging the gap between laboratory and clinic in child and adolescent psychotherapy.

Meta-analyses of laboratory outcome studies reveal beneficial effects of psychotherapy with children and adolescents. However, the research therapy in most of those lab studies differs from everyday clinic therapy in several ways, and the 9 studies of clinic therapy the authors have found show markedly poorer outcomes than research therapy studies. These findings suggest a need to bridge the long-standing gap between outcome researchers and clinicians. Three kinds of bridging research are proposed and illustrated: (a) enriching the research data base on treatment effects by practitioners in clinical settings—including private practice and health maintenance organizations, (b) identifying features of research therapy that account for positive outcomes and applying those features to clinical practice, and (c) exporting lab-tested treatments to clinics and assessing their effects with referred youths. If these bridging strategies were widely adopted, despite the numerous obstacles described herein, real progress might be made toward more effective treatment in clinical practice. Electrochemical polymerization of N-methyl-10,10-dimethylphenazasiline

N-methyl-10,10-dimethylphenazasiline (SIN) was polymerized by electrochemical oxidation at +1.3 V in methylene chloride. Acid-base equilibria in solution between the heterocyclic nitrogen and the protons produced by the coupling reaction were detected. The oxidized polymer deposits on platinum or ITO electrodes to give strongly adherent and electrochromic coatings.     

A solid-state electrochromic device based on complementary polypyrrole/polythiophene derivatives and an elastomeric electrolyte

A device was assembled using optically transparent glass electrodes and combining two complementary electrochromic polymeric materials, poly(4,4-dipentoxy-2,2-bithiophene) and poly(N,N-dimethyl-2,2-bipyrrole). As electrolyte we used an ionically conductive polymer; poly(epichlorohydrin-co-ethylene oxide) containing a lithium salt. The optical contrast in the visible/near infrared region, stability to repeated redox cycles and electrochromic efficiency are reported and discussed.     

An aspect-oriented methodology for designing secure applications

We propose a methodology, based on aspect-oriented modeling (AOM), for incorporating security mechanisms in an application. The functionality of the application is described using the primary model and the attacks are specified using aspects. The attack aspect is composed with the primary model to obtain the misuse model. The misuse model describes how much the application can be compromised. If the results are unacceptable, then some security mechanism must be incorporated into the application. The security mechanism, modeled as security aspect, is composed with the primary model to obtain the security-treated model. The security-treated model is analyzed to give assurance that it is resilient to the attack.

This article was originally published with the wrong first page. Printed issues contain the first page for the preceding article, Effectiveness of Filial Therapy for Korean Parents, by Mikyung Jang. Examined the effectiveness of the 10-wk filial therapy model as an intervention for 25 Native American parents (aged 23–46 yrs) and their 21 children (aged 3–10 yrs) residing on the Flathead Reservation in Montana. Results show that Native American parents significantly increased their level of empathy in their interactions with their children.
