"Indirect land use change for biofuels: Testing predictions and improving analytical methodologies" by S. Kim and B. Dale [1], presents a principal inference not supported by its results, that rests on a fundamental conceptual error, and that has no place in the current discussion of biofuels’ climate effects. The paper takes correlation between two variables in a system with many interacting factors to indicate (or contraindicate) causation, and draws a completely incorrect inference from observed sample statistics and their significance levels.  相似文献

Al(2)O(3) and TiO(2) atomic layer deposition (ALD) were employed to develop an ultrathin barrier film on copper to prevent water corrosion. The strategy was to utilize Al(2)O(3) ALD as a pinhole-free barrier and to protect the Al(2)O(3) ALD using TiO(2) ALD. An initial set of experiments was performed at 177 °C to establish that Al(2)O(3) ALD could nucleate on copper and produce a high-quality Al(2)O(3) film. In situ quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) measurements verified that Al(2)O(3) ALD nucleated and grew efficiently on copper-plated quartz crystals at 177 °C using trimethylaluminum (TMA) and water as the reactants. An electroplating technique also established that the Al(2)O(3) ALD films had a low defect density. A second set of experiments was performed for ALD at 120 °C to study the ability of ALD films to prevent copper corrosion. These experiments revealed that an Al(2)O(3) ALD film alone was insufficient to prevent copper corrosion because of the dissolution of the Al(2)O(3) film in water. Subsequently, TiO(2) ALD was explored on copper at 120 °C using TiCl(4) and water as the reactants. The resulting TiO(2) films also did not prevent the water corrosion of copper. Fortunately, Al(2)O(3) films with a TiO(2) capping layer were much more resilient to dissolution in water and prevented the water corrosion of copper. Optical microscopy images revealed that TiO(2) capping layers as thin as 200 ? on Al(2)O(3) adhesion layers could prevent copper corrosion in water at 90 °C for ~80 days. In contrast, the copper corroded almost immediately in water at 90 °C for Al(2)O(3) and ZnO films by themselves on copper. Ellipsometer measurements revealed that Al(2)O(3) films with a thickness of ~200 ? and ZnO films with a thickness of ~250 ? dissolved in water at 90 °C in ~10 days. In contrast, the ellipsometer measurements confirmed that the TiO(2) capping layers with thicknesses of ~200 ? on the Al(2)O(3) adhesion layers protected the copper for ~80 days in water at 90 °C. The TiO(2) ALD coatings were also hydrophilic and facilitated H(2)O wetting to copper wire mesh substrates.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: The aim of this article was to analyze the perioperative mortality and stroke risk rates and late benefits of carotid endarterectomy (CE) contralateral to an occluded internal carotid artery (ICA), on the basis of our surgical experience from July 1990 to June 1996. METHODS: In 57 (14.7%) of 336 patients undergoing 388 CEs, the contralateral ICA was occluded (group I). All operations were performed under general anesthesia with selective shunting based on electroencephalographic criteria. Shunting was used in 36 (63.1%) of 57 revascularizations in group I and 47 (14.2%) of 331 operations performed on the remaining 279 patients with patent contralateral ICAs (group II) (p < 0.001). RESULTS: Perioperative strokes occurred in two patients (3.5%) in group I and three patients (1%) in group II (difference not significant). The only perioperative death, which occurred in one patient (1.7%) in group I, was the result of a perioperative stroke; two patients (0.7%) in group II died within 30 days of operation (difference not significant). Life-table cumulative stroke-free rates at 1, 3, and 5 years were 95%, 95%, 95% in group I and 98.8%, 98.2%, and 98.2% in group II, respectively (p = 0.272). Life-table cumulative survival rates at 1, 3, and 5 years were 97.5%, 94.2%, and 78.1% in group I and 99.2%, 94.8%, and 71.7% in group II, respectively (p = 0.306). CONCLUSIONS: The results of this analysis indicate that CE contralateral to an occluded ICA can be performed with acceptable perioperative mortality and stroke risk rates and late stroke-free and survival rates comparable to those seen in patients without contralateral ICA occlusion who have undergone operation. Nevertheless, we think it is misleading to imply that the risks of operating on the two groups are the same. Moreover, because no late stroke-related death occurred in patients with contralateral ICA occlusion, it would appear that superior late stroke-free rates did not translate into a prolonged survival advantage.  相似文献

We measured the photopic spectral sensitivity of multiunit activity in the torus longitudinalis and optic tectum of goldfish. Since negative contrast stimuli are most effective for exciting torus longitudinalis, spiking activity was evoked by the shadow of a disc moving through a monochromatic light beam projected upon a screen. The amount of activity evoked in torus longitudinalis generally increased with the monochromatic stimulus radiance at the same rate for all wavelengths, indicating a univariant response. Spiking activity in tectum, however, increased at different rates across the spectrum, indicating color-dependent responses. The action spectra for torus longitudinalis were all similar and relatively flat as expected of a homogeneous, broad-band luminance processing system, and about 1 log unit more sensitive than the tectal action spectra. The latter generally displayed sharp peaks and dips in sensitivity indicative of opponent processing.  相似文献

We compared the potencies of systemic administration of bombesin (BN) and its mammalian homologue gastrin-releasing peptide (GRP) to decrease sham feeding in rats. Bombesin (at doses of 8, 16 and 32 micrograms/kg, intraperitoneally) inhibited sham feeding by 37% (p < 0.001), 58% (p < 0.001) and 65% (p < 0.001), respectively, confirming previous results. Gastrin-releasing peptide (16, 32, and 64 micrograms/kg) failed to affect sham feeding. Bombesin (16 micrograms/kg) and gastrin-releasing peptide (32 micrograms/kg) inhibited real feeding by 64% (p < 0.001) and 44% (p < 0.004), respectively. Pregastric food stimulation is not sufficient for the inhibitory action of GRP.  相似文献

A gasoline release site at the Dept. of Defense Housing Facility (DODHF) in Novato, Calif., resulted in dissolved methyl tertiary-butyl ether (MTBE) in a shallow, thin, heterogeneous aquifer. Multiple methods were used to evaluate the stability of the MTBE plume, including concentration versus time plots, isoconcentration contour maps, total dissolved MTBE mass and center of mass (COM) estimates, total plume extent changes, and parametric and nonparametric statistical techniques. The COM evaluation revealed a small upgradient shift in COM relative to both total plume extent and total MTBE mass reduction over the period examined. The total mass removal received substantial contributions from both the southern and northern portions of the plume, and the only removal mechanisms active in the northern plume were natural attenuation mechanisms. The results indicate that there exists at DODHF Novato a dissolved MTBE plume at the approximate balancing point between groundwater advection, which is carrying MTBE downgradient, and natural attenuation processes including aerobic biodegradation, which are reducing MTBE concentrations at about the same rate.  相似文献

The authors examined the efficacy of Bacillus anthracis protective antigen (PA) combined with adjuvants as vaccines against an aerosol challenge of virulent anthrax spores in rhesus macaques. Adjuvants tested included i) aluminum hydroxide (Alhydrogel), ii) saponin QS-21 and iii) monophosphoryl lipid A (MPL) in squalene/lecithin/Tween 80 emulsion (SLT). Animals were immunized once with either 50 micrograms of recombinant PA plus adjuvant, or with Anthrax Vaccine Adsorbed (AVA), the licensed human anthrax vaccine. The serological response to PA was measured by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay. Lymphocyte proliferation and serum neutralization of in vitro lethal toxin cytotoxicity were also assayed. In all vaccine groups, anti-PA IgM and IgG titers peaked at 2 weeks and 4-5 weeks postimmunization, respectively. Five weeks postimmunization, animals in all vaccine groups demonstrated PA-specific lymphocyte proliferation and sera that neutralized in vitro cytotoxicity. Six weeks after immunization, the animals were challenged by aerosol with approximately 93 LD50 of virulent anthrax spores. Animals were bled daily for 1 week to monitor bacteremia, and deaths were recorded. Anti-PA ELISA titers in all groups of immunized animals were substantially increased 2 weeks after challenge. One dose of each vaccine provided significant protection (> 90%) against inhalation anthrax in the rhesus macaques.  相似文献

We describe an unusual case of pulmonary involvement by mycosis fungoides in a 31-year-old woman. Disseminated disease had developed despite cutaneous irradiation and systemic combination chemotherapy. Microscopy of biopsied tumour deposits in the lung showed a polymorphous, angiocentric lymphoid infiltrate, including atypical cells with convoluted nuclei which displayed a T-cell phenotype. Numerous epithelioid granulomas were also present. These histological appearances represent an unusual pattern of pulmonary involvement by disseminated mycosis fungoides.  相似文献
