Browning on the surface of cut lettuce slices inhibited by short term exposure to nitric oxide (NO)

Freshly cut lettuce slices (Latuca sativa L.) were fumigated with nitric oxide (NO) gas at concentrations between 5 and 1000 μl/l in air at 20 °C for 1–4 h or dipped in an aqueous solution of the NO-donor compound, 2,2′-(hydroxynitrosohydrazino)-bisethanamine (DETANO) at concentrations between 10 and 1000 mg/l for 15 s to 60 min at 20 °C. Development of browning on the cut surfaces was inhibited during subsequent storage at 0 °C. The most effective treatments for extending postharvest life of lettuce slices were fumigation with 500 μl/l NO for 1 h, and dipping in 500 mg/l DETANO for 5 min. Dipping in DETANO solution was, however, more effective as it generated a 100% increase in postharvest life compared with a 70% increase due to NO gas. Solutions of DETANO in water were found to be relatively stable as the same extension in postharvest life was obtained for five batches of lettuce sequentially dipped in the same solution.     

Diffusion of Selenium in Liquid-Phase Epitaxy–Grown Hg<Subscript>0.78</Subscript>Cd<Subscript>0.22</Subscript>Te

We present preliminary results on Se diffusion in liquid-phase epitaxy (LPE)–grown HgCdTe epilayers. The LPE Hg_0.78Cd_0.22Te samples were implanted with Se of 2.0 × 10¹⁴/cm² at 100 keV and annealed at 350–450°C in mercury saturated vapor. Secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) profiles were obtained for each sample. From a Gaussian fit, we find that the Se diffusion coefficient D _Se is about 1–2 orders of magnitude smaller than that of arsenic. The as-implanted Se distribution is taken into account in case of small diffusion length in Gaussian fitting. The D _Se was found to satisfy the Arrhenius relationship .     

Synthesis of Energetic Polymers by the Introduction of Energetic Groups onto Polymeric Primary and Secondary Amines

Energetic polymers have been synthesised by the introduction of picryl groups onto linear polyethylenimine and polyvinylamine. The degree of substitution was 70–97% for polyethylenimine, depending upon the molecular weight of the polymer, and around 70% for polyvinylamine. N‐Picrylation of low molecular weight, model compounds was also studied. The results illustrate the influence of molecular weight on the chemical accessibility of a reaction site and reflect the difficulty of modelling polymer modification reactions using small molecules.     

The effect of postharvest 1-MCP treatment and storage atmosphere on ‘Cripps Pink’ apple phenolics and antioxidant activity

This study investigated the effect of a postharvest 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) treatment, controlled atmosphere and storage time on the total antioxidant activity (TAA) and phenolic compounds in the peel and flesh of ‘Cripps Pink’ apples (Malus domestica Borkh.). Preclimacteric apples were harvested and treated with 1-MCP then stored in normal atmosphere (NA) or controlled atmosphere (CA) at 0 °C for up to 160 days. In general, the level of phenolics decreased by 9% in the peel and significantly increased twofold in the flesh during cold storage, regardless of storage atmosphere or 1-MCP treatment. However, treatment with 1-MCP resulted in significantly lower concentrations of chlorogenic acid and procyanidin B2 in apple flesh, and catechin and epicatechin in the peel compared to the control fruits. There was no significant effect of CA on the phenolic compounds during long-term storage, except for quercetin 3-galactoside and quercetin 3-glucoside, which both significantly increased under CA storage. Total antioxidant activity (TAA) is an important nutritional attribute of apples in the human diet. The results showed that TAA in the peel tissue was about eight times higher than that of the flesh, with mean values of 4.75 g TE/kg FW and 0.56 TE/kg FW, respectively. The TAA in both the peel and flesh tissue increased significantly during storage by 40% and 70%, respectively. The storage atmosphere did not significantly affect TAA in either the peel or flesh, whilst the 1-MCP treatment significantly reduced the TAA in the peel tissue only. These results show the beneficial combined effects of pre-storage 1-MCP treatment and CA on ‘Cripps Pink’ apple phenolic composition and antioxidant capacity during long term storage.     

Community examiners' evaluations of competence to stand trial: Common problems and suggestions for improvement.

With the exponential growth of forensic psychology over recent decades, increasing numbers of clinical psychologists with little specialized training are becoming principal providers of forensic assessments. On the basis of results from an empirical study, the authors analyze 3 fundamental problems with these psychologists' reports on competence to stand trial and provide recommendations for improvement based on legal, ethical, and professional standards of practice. The article focuses on the importance of (a) properly attending to the range of critical psycholegal abilities, including the defendant's decisional capacities; (b) explaining the critical reasoning that underlies one's psycholegal conclusions; and (c) using forensically relevant methods of assessment. Cytokines regulate expression and function of the HIV coreceptor CXCR4 on human mature dendritic cells

HIV-infected dendritic cells (DC) efficiently transmit infection to CD4+ T cells during the process of T cell activation. To further understand interactions between DC and HIV, cytokine regulation of HIV coreceptors on cultured Langerhans cells (cLC, as prototypes of mature DC) was studied. Expression of cell surface CXCR4 on cLC was up-regulated by IL-4 and TGF-beta1 and inhibited by IFN-alpha, IFN-beta, and IFN-gamma, whereas cytokines did not appreciably regulate CCR5. Changes in cell surface CXCR4 expression on cLC correlated with T cell-tropic (X4)-HIV envelope-mediated syncytium formation and X4-HIV infection levels. A relative increase in the ratio of type 2/type 1 cytokine production, which can occur in HIV disease, may up-regulate CXCR4 expression on mature DC and promote infection by X4 viruses. Importantly, these findings suggest that cytokine dysregulation may be linked to the emergence of X4-HIV strains as HIV-infected individuals progress to AIDS.

Results of a survey of 454 graduate PhD candidates in psychology (1966–1987) suggest that current graduate students must assume a greater proportion of the cost of their education. The importance of wall angle for stability in solar ponds

Minimum stability criteria due to the presence of wall effects in salt gradient solar ponds are introduced. The effects of sun-facing wall angle on incident solar radiation and the onset of instabilities in the form of local convective layers are discussed. It is shown that when a sun-facing wall deviates from vertical then the chance of wall-induced instabilities is increased. However, when a slope of minimum stability is reached, then stability improves as the angle increases further. It is shown that this angle of minimum stability depends only on the latitude of the location.
