To investigate racial differences in hypertensive patients' understanding of their disorder, we administered a questionnaire to 83 black and 260 white outpatients with the diagnosis of hypertension designated in their medical chart. No racial differences in systolic or diastolic blood pressure, age, or male/female ratio were observed. However, blacks were more likely than whites to identify renal failure as a consequence of hypertension, whereas whites were more likely to identify atherosclerosis. Blacks also were more likely than whites to accept higher diastolic blood pressures as normal (90 to 100 mm Hg versus 80 to 90 mm Hg). There was no correlation between knowledge and blood pressure. Our observations show that both racial groups are well educated about antihypertensive therapy as well as the consequences and complications of hypertension. Comprehensive treatment of hypertension should include educational strategies that are population-specific and that address ways to change disease-relevant behaviors, rather than merely identifying which behaviors to change.  相似文献

Traditional confocal microscopy uses a physical aperture barrier to prevent out-of-focus light from reaching the detector. The physical nature of a conventional aperture limits control over the system confocality. We describe a new line scanning confocal microscope that eliminates a need for a physical aperture by employing a software-controllable rolling shutter on a CMOS camera. A confocal image is obtained by synchronizing motion of the rolling shutter and the laser line scanning over a sample. Confocal resolution of this microscope is adjustable in real time and independently established for each fluorescence channel by changing the rolling shutter width. This technology has been implemented in the IN Cell Analyzer 6000 system by GE Healthcare.  相似文献

Thermal diffusivity and conductivity values for several Al2O3-SiC whisker composites were determined. The thermal diffusivity values spanned the range from 373 to 1473 K, and thermal conductivity data wre obtained between 305 and 365 K. The thermal diffusivity decreased with increasing temperature and increased with SiC-whisker content. An estimate of the thermal conductivity of the whiskers was obtained from the direct thermal conductivity measurements, but attempts to derive whisker conductivity values from the thermal diffusivity data were not successful because the laser flash method lacks the required accuracy and precision. Specimens were subjected to two different thermal quench experiments to investigate the effect of thermal history on diffusivity. In the most severe case, multiple 1073- to 373-K quenches, radial cracks were observed in the test specimens; however, there was no change in diffusivity. The lack of sensitivity to thermal cycling appears to be related to the sample size.  相似文献

Creation of inexpensive small-flow cytometers is important for applications ranging from disease diagnosis in resource-poor areas to use in distributed sensor networks. In conventional-flow cytometers, hydrodynamics focus particles to the center of a flow stream for analysis, which requires sheath fluid that increases consumable use and waste while dramatically reducing instrument portability. Here we have evaluated, using quantitative measurements of fluorescent microspheres and cells, the performance of a flow cytometer that uses acoustic energy to focus particles to the center of a flow stream. This evaluation demonstrated measurement precision for fluorescence and side scatter CVs for alignment microspheres of 2.54% and 7.7%, respectively. Particles bearing 7 x 10(3) fluorophores were well resolved in a background of 50 nM free fluorophore. The lower limit of detection was determined to be about 650 fluorescein molecules. Analysis of Chinese hamster cells on the system demonstrated that acoustic focusing had no effect on cellular viability. These results indicate that the ultrasonic flow cytometer has the necessary performance for most flow cytometry applications. Furthermore, through robust engineering approaches and the combination of acoustic focusing with low-cost light sources, detectors, and data acquisition systems, it will be possible to achieve a low-cost, truly portable flow cytometer.  相似文献

A series of SiC-AlN compositions of 0, 10, 25, 50, 75, 90, and 100 mol% AlN were hot pressed at 2100°C for a 1 h soak at a pressure of 35 MPa under vacuum. 2H-wurtzite SiC-AlN solid-solution structures were formed for compositions with 25-100 mol% AlN. The associated lattice parameters for these solid solutions followed Vegard's law. The microstructures varied with composition; the number of needlelike grains decreased for compositions up to 25 mol% AlN and the amount of equiaxed grains increased for compositions with 25–100 mol% AlN. Densities for all the specimens were >99% of the theoretical density. Coefficients of thermal expansion varied from 4.80 × 10-6/°C to 6.25 × 10-6/°C in the 20°-1400°C range. Young's moduli varied from 451 GPa to 320 GPa at room temperature (RT) and retained 98%, 96%, and 94% of their RT values at 500°, 1000°, and 1250°C, respectively. These three properties correlated linearly with composition. RT microhardness varied from 21.6 GPa to 11.2 GPa and correlated linearly with composition within the solid-solution range. Flexural strengths increased from 487 MPa to 604 MPa from 0 mol% AlN to 25 mol% AlN and then decreased to 284 MPa for 100 mol% AlN. At 1250°C, flexural strengths decreased from 90% to 65% of the RT values. Fracture toughness increased from 3.6 MPa·m1/2 to 4.2 MPa·m1/2 from 0 mol% AlN to 10 mol% AlN and then decreased to 2.5 MPa·m1/2 for 100 mol% AlN.  相似文献

The solid-state UV photocrosslinking mechanism and the properties of dense crosslinked films composed of poly [(methylphenoxy)(phenoxy)phosphazene], poly[(ethylphenoxy)(phenoxy)phosphazene], and poly[(isopropylphenoxy)(phenoxy)phosphazene] were investigated, where the alkyl substituent was in either the meta- or para-position. Solution-cast films containing dissolved benzophenone photoinitiator (at a concentration of 1–25 mol %) were crosslinked at either 25 or 70°C. The ordering of benzophenone disappearance during polymer irradiation was methylphenoxy > ethylphenoxy > isopropylphenoxy, indicating that the rate controlling step for photoinitiator disappearance was the consumption of benzophenone, either by benzopinacole formation (with the creation of a polymer crosslink) or by reaction of a benzophenone-derived ketyl radical with a polymer macro-radical. The presence of such a ketyl adduct in crosslinked ethylphenoxy/phenoxy and isopropylphenoxy/phenoxy phosphazene films was verified by solid-state NMR. The ordering of crosslinked polymer swelling (for a given initial benzophenone concentration) when films were equilibrated in dimethylacetamide (DMAc) was isopropylphenoxy/phenoxy > ethylphenoxy/phenoxy > methylphenoxy/phenoxy, indicating that steric effects of the alkyl group were playing a role during crosslink formation. The methylphenoxy/phenoxy phosphazenes were the best materials for crosslinking; the glass transition temperature increased by approximately 25°C (from −15 to 10°C) and the film swelling (in DMAc) decreased from infinity (complete solubilization) to 35% as the benzophenone concentration was increased from 0 to 25 mol %. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    In a newly discovered form of visual masking, a target stimulus is masked by 4 flanking dots if their offset is delayed relative to the target (V. Di Lollo, J. T. Enns, & R. A. Rensink, 2000). In Di Lollo et al. (2000), the dot pattern also cued the relevant target and therefore required deliberate attention. In the present Experiments 2-6, a central arrow cued 1 of 2 letters for an E/F discrimination, with dots flanking both letters. Masking was reduced compared with the mask-cue procedure but was still robust. Delayed-offset dots flanking the nontarget also impaired performance, indicating competition for attention. Masking was unaffected by brightness of the dots relative to the target. Masking was attenuated not only by precuing attention to the target location but also by preview of an uninformative dot mask. Theories of masking by object substitution must therefore accommodate the prior context into which the target stimulus is introduced.     The present study examined the relationship between acculturation, alcohol consumption and AIDS-related risky sexual behavior in a national probability sample of 533 African American women. Results indicated that women who were the heaviest drinkers were also the least acculturated. However, women most likely to engage in risky sexual behavior, including having multiple partners, being nonmonogamous or in a nonmonogamous relationship, and being nonmonogamous or in a nonmonogamous relationship and not using a condom consistently, were high in acculturation rather than low. Alcohol use proved related to risky sexual behavior when considered in conjunction with respondents' level of acculturation. Women at risk for contracting AIDS were not low acculturated African American women who drank heavily, but high acculturated African American women. Findings from this study extend our understanding of risk and contain implications for research and prevention efforts in the area of alcohol use and AIDS-related sexual behavior among African American women.  相似文献

    Postpartum production performance of dairy heifers may be enhanced by prepartum milking by alleviating the stress of the periparturient period. The objective of this study was to determine the impact of prepartum milking of dairy heifers on postpartum reproduction, udder health, milk production and other associated production characteristics. Pregnant heifers (Holstein, n=21; Jersey n=10) were assigned to either a prepartum milked (premilked, n=15) or control (n=16) group. Premilked heifers were milked twice daily starting 3 weeks prior to anticipated calving dates, and milk yield recorded at each milking. All heifers were evaluated on days 21, 14 and 7 before calving, and udder oedema scores and milk conductivity readings were recorded. Following calving, measurements were taken twice weekly to assess udder oedema, milk conductivity (indicative of udder infection), and reproductive health, which included palpation for uterine tone and uterine position, vaginal electrical impedance (VEI) and the quantification of cross-sectional area of the uterine horns (uterine difference) by transrectal ultrasonography. Uterine tone, uterine position, uterine difference, and VEI did not differ (P>0.10) with treatment. Overall, up to week six inclusive, postpartum premilked heifers had lower (P<0.01) udder oedema scores than control heifers and up to week five inclusive, had lower (P<0.01) milk conductivity readings (indicative of fewer incidences of udder infections) than control heifers. The premilked heifers of both breeds produced more milk (P<0.01) at calving and more milk overall from calving to day 60 postpartum than the control heifers. In summary, udder health and milk production were improved post calving in premilked heifers compared with controls. However, no overt differences in reproductive characteristics were observed between the premilked and control heifers.  相似文献

    Today's competitive and dynamic environment forces companies to be highly responsive and customer oriented to survive and be successful. This paper considers an automated gantry picking complex with 16 pick zones and 16 replenishment zones. Currently, it operates on a 24-h cycle time. A short cycle time operation allows a warehouse manager to be more responsive, flexible and competitive. For example, it allows insertion of late arriving, but high priority, orders into the current cycle. However, to operate in a short cycle environment, the warehouse operations' planning and execution must be more dynamic, real-time and intelligent. To realize a short cycle time without loss of productivity, a new replenishment process logic for the gantry-picking complex is developed. The main idea of the new replenishment logic is to minimize the set-up time. Experimental results demonstrating the efficiency of the new approach are also presented.  相似文献
