We investigated the ability of human observers to discriminate an important global 3-D structural property, namely volume, of motion-defined objects. We used convex transparent wire-frame objects consisting of about 12 planar triangular facets. Two objects, vertically separated by 7 degrees, were shown simultaneously on a computer display. Both revolved at 67 degrees/sec around a common vertical axis through their centers of mass. Observers watched the objects monocularly for an average of three full rotations before they responded. We measured volume discrimination as a function of absolute volume (3-48 cm3; 1 m viewing distance) and shape (cubes, rods, and slabs of different regularity). We found that (1) volume discrimination performance can be described by Weber's law, (2) Weber fractions depend strongly on the particular combination of shapes used (regular shapes, especially cubes, are easiest to compare, and similar shapes are easier to compare than different shapes), and (3) humans use a representation of volume that is more veridical and stable in the sense of repeatability than a strategy based on the average visible (2-D) area would yield.  相似文献

The cell growth response of cultured Chinese hamster ovary cells, line CHO, to 800 rads of X irradiation involves a period of division delay, followed by a period of resumed division which terminates in a plateau phase. Over 95% of the cells die eventually. No direct effects of RNA or protein metabolism are evident during the delay period. During the resumed division and beginning of plateau phases, however, a specific and relatively constant reduction in mRNA synthesis relative to messenger-like RNA and heterogenous nuclear RNA synthesis is evidenced. The ratio of mRNA to messenger-like RNA synthesis ranges from 0.8 to 0.65 during these phases. The effect is not due to altered cell-cycle distribution, and evidence is presented to indicate that it is probably not a compensatory response to the unbalanced growth that occurs during the division delay period.  相似文献

Cortical and subcortical somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEPs) were noninvasively monitored in 191 surgical procedures involving the cervical spine. In nine patients in the poorest neurological condition, SSEPs could not be monitored. Lower limb SSEPs were often too degraded to be useful. Upper limb responses were reliably recorded in 182 procedures, with a sensitivity of 99% and a specificity of 27% in 10 patients who developed neurological signs postsurgery. The aim of monitoring was to detect changes in spinal cord function at a time when neurological deterioration could be prevented or reversed, and these studies alerted the authors to certain clinical and SSEP risk factors associated with deterioration. Clinical and operative risk factors were: 1) poor pre-operative neurological function (one-third of Ranawat Class IIIb patients deteriorated); 2) use of instrumentation (the risk doubled in preoperatively unimpaired patients); 3) upper cervical and clival surgery (the risk tripled); and 4) and multisegmental surgery (increased risk with each additional level). There were SSEP changes in 33 patients. Fifty percent of patients with a complete loss had neurological damage, unlike those who had incomplete loss or whose electrical changes had recovered by the end of surgery. In the authors' view these "false positives" may represent real physiological changes, the effects of which might have been minimized by an alteration in the surgeon's response as a result of the warning. Although these initial studies have made this surgical team more alert to potential problems, the role of intraoperative SSEP monitoring is still being debated.  相似文献

Dietary fiber was extensively discussed in an article by G.A. Spiller and R.J. Amen in this journal in 1975 (Volume 7 Issue 1). The progress in this field has been tremendous in the past 2 years. What was an uncertain field in 1975 and what at that time to some investigators still appeared as a hypothesis or fad without much proof has turned into a much more respected part of nutritional sciences. The scientific quality of recent studies on dietary fiber in human nutrition shows a great deal of sophistication and care. Improved analytical methodologies are being used more extensively. Many nutritionists and clinicians have accepted the fact that a reasonable increase in the dietary fiber intake in the U.S. and U.K would be advisable. In this article, the possible beneficial effects of dietary fiber on health, the possible harmful side effects, and the food science aspects are carefully discussed after an update on chemistry, analytical procedures, and nomenclature. Undoubtedly, dietary fiber has found a new niche in the sciences of nutrition, medicine, epidemiology, and foods.  相似文献
