The intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) expressed by endothelial cells is crucial in promoting adhesion and transmigration of circulating leukocytes across the blood-brain barrier (BBB). Migrated immunocompetent cells, in turn, release mediators that stimulate glial and endothelial cells to express ICAM-1 and release cytokines, possibly sustaining cerebral damage. Following activation, proteolytic cleavage of membrane-anchored ICAM-1 results in measurable levels of a soluble form, sICAM-1. The aims of this study were to investigate the changes of sICAM-1 levels in ventricular CSF and serum and to elucidate the influence of structural brain damage as estimated by computerized tomography (CT) as well as the extent of BBB dysfunction as calculated by the CSF/serum albumin ratio (QA) in patients with severe traumatic brain injury (TBI). All investigated parameters revealed two subgroups. Patients belonging to group A had sICAM-1 levels in CSF above normal range, presented marked cerebral damage and a disturbance of the BBB (range 0.6-24.7 ng/ml, n = 8). In contrast, patients belonging to group B had no elevation of sICAM-1 values in CSF (range 0.3-3.9 ng/ml, n = 5; p < 0.017) and showed minor cerebral damage with an intact BBB in most cases. In addition, overall analysis showed that sICAM-1 in CSF correlated with the extent of BBB damage as indicated by the QA (r = 0.76; p < 0.001). These results suggest that increased sICAM-1 levels in CSF might depict ongoing immunologic activation and that sICAM-1 correlates with the extent of tissue and BBB damage. The origin of soluble ICAM-1 in CSF and its pathophysiologic role after TBI remains to be clarified. 相似文献
This work presents an extension of grid generation techniques for finite-volume discretizations of density-driven flow in fractured porous media, in which fractures are considered as low-dimensional manifolds and are resolved by sides of grid elements. The proposed technique introduces additional degrees of freedom for the unknowns assigned to the fractures and thus allows to reconstruct jumps of the solution over a fracture. Through the concept of degenerated elements, the proposed technique can be used for arbitrary junctions of fractures but is sufficiently simple regarding the implementation and allows for the application of conventional numerical solvers. Numerical experiments presented at the end of the paper demonstrate the applicability of this technique in two and three dimensions for complicated fracture networks. 相似文献

A dedicated specimen holder has been designed to perform low-voltage scanning transmission electron microscopy in dark field mode. Different test samples, namely InGaAs/GaAs quantum wells, InGaAs nanowires and thick InGaAs layers, have been analysed to test the reliability of the model based on the proportionality to the specimen mass-thickness, generally used for image intensity interpretation of scattering contrast processes. We found that size of the probe, absorption and channelling must be taken into account to give a quantitative interpretation of image intensity. We develop a simple procedure to evaluate the probe-size effect and to obtain a quantitative indication of the absorption coefficient. Possible artefacts induced by channelling are pointed out. With the developed procedure, the low voltage approach can be successfully applied for quantitative compositional analysis. The method is then applied to the estimation of the In content in the core of InGaAs/GaAs core-shell nanowires. 相似文献
Panama disease of banana, caused by the fungus Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense, is a serious constraint both to the commercial production of banana and cultivation for subsistence agriculture. Previous work has indicated that F. oxysporum f. sp. cubense consists of several clonal lineages that may be genetically distant. In this study we tested whether lineages of the Panama disease pathogen have a monophyletic origin by comparing DNA sequences of nuclear and mitochondrial genes. DNA sequences were obtained for translation elongation factor 1alpha and the mitochondrial small subunit ribosomal RNA genes for F. oxysporum strains from banana, pathogenic strains from other hosts and putatively nonpathogenic isolates of F. oxysporum. Cladograms for the two genes were highly concordant and a partition-homogeneity test indicated the two datasets could be combined. The tree inferred from the combined dataset resolved five lineages corresponding to "F. oxysporum f. sp. cubense" with a large dichotomy between two taxa represented by strains most commonly isolated from bananas with Panama disease. The results also demonstrate that the latter two taxa have significantly different chromosome numbers. F. oxysporum isolates collected as nonpathogenic or pathogenic to other hosts that have very similar or identical elongation factor 1alpha and mitochondrial small subunit genotypes as banana pathogens were shown to cause little or no disease on banana. Taken together, these results indicate Panama disease of banana is caused by fungi with independent evolutionary origins. 相似文献
In this paper, we present an evaluation of a social adaptive website in the domain of cultural events, iCITY DSA, which provides information about cultural resources and events that promote the cultural heritage in the city of Turin. Using this evaluation, our objective was to investigate the actual usage of a social adaptive website, in an effort to discover the real behavior of users, the unforeseen correlations among user actions and the consequent interactive behavior, the accuracy of both system and social recommendations and their impact on the users themselves, and the role of tagging in the user modeling process. The major contributions of the paper are manifold: insights into user interactions with social adaptive systems; guidelines for future designs; evaluation of the tagging activity and tag meanings in relation to the application domain and thus their impact on the representation of the user model; and a demonstration of how a combination and interplay of evaluation methodologies (e.g., quantitative and qualitative) can enhance our comprehension of evaluation data. 相似文献
In this work, we contribute to the study of the structural reorganisation of biological tissues in response to mechanical stimuli. We specialise our investigation to a class of hydrated soft tissues, whose internal structure features reinforcing fibres. These are oriented statistically within the tissue, and their pattern of orientation is such that, at each material point, the tissue is anisotropic. From its natural, stress-free state, the tissue can be distorted anelastically into a global reference configuration, and then deformed under the action of external mechanical loads. The anelastic distortions are responsible for changing irreversibly the internal structure of the tissue, which, in the present context, occurs through both the rearrangement of the bonds among the tissue cells and the deformation-driven reorientation of the fibres. The anelastic strains, in addition, are assumed to model the onset and evolution of microcracks in the tissue, which may be triggered by the mechanical loads applied to the tissue in the case of traumatic events, or diseases. For our purposes, we formulate an anisotropic model of remodelling and we consider a fully isotropic model of structural reorganisation for comparison, with the aim to study if, how, and to what extent the evolution of anelastic distortions is influenced by the tissue’s anisotropy.
