MR monitoring of focused ultrasonic surgery of renal cortex: experimental and simulation studies

The aim of the study was to test the hypothesis that magnetic resonance (MR) imaging-guided and -monitored noninvasive ultrasonic surgery can be performed in highly perfused tissues from outside the body. A simulation study was performed to evaluate the optimal sonication parameters. An MR-compatible positioning device was then used to manipulate a focused ultrasound transducer in an MR imager, which was used to sonicate kidneys of five rabbits at various power levels and different durations. Temperature elevation during sonication was monitored with a T1-weighted spoiled gradient-echo sequence. The simulation study demonstrated that a sharply focused transducer and relatively short sonication times (30 seconds or less) are necessary to prevent damage to the overlying skin and muscle tissue, which have a much lower blood perfusion rate than kidney. The experiments showed that the imaging sequence was sensitive enough to show temperature elevation during sonication, thereby indicating the location of the beam focus. Histologic evaluations showed that kidney necrosis could be consistently induced without damage to overlying skin and muscle. The study demonstrated that highly perfused tissues such as the renal cortex can be coagulated from outside the body with focused ultrasound and that MR imaging can be used to guide and monitor this surgery.     

Overview of LIMEX'87 ice observations

Ice observations, results, and conclusions are summarized for the March 1987 Labrador Ice Margin Experiment (LIMEX'87), an international oceanographic study conducted in the pack ice of the Grand Banks area off the coast of Newfoundland. Included are the ice extent, flow size and thickness, ice kinematics and rheology, ice microwave properties, oceanic properties under the ice, and penetration of swell into the ice     

Starting up the Sherritt Zinc Pressure Leach Process at Hudson Bay

The first commercial application of the Sherritt two-stage zinc pressure leach process commenced operation at the Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Company metallurgical complex in Flin Flon, Manitoba (Canada), on July 2, 1993. The start-up was relatively smooth, and full design rate for the plant was achieved by September 12, 1993. Since that time, zinc extraction in the zinc pressure leach plant has consistently been in excess of 98%, and production has continued to exceed expectations. The successful operation of the Hudson Bay plant represents a significant advancement of zinc processing technology, especially with respect to meeting the environmental challenge faced by zinc plants today.     

Successful engraftment of haploidentical stem cell transplant for familial haemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis using both bone marrow and peripheral blood stem cells

Familial haemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is a disease with a very poor prognosis unless patients receive a bone marrow transplant. It is often difficult to find an HLA-matched donor and haploidentical familial donors may be considered. The main complication of this type of transplant is graft rejection. We describe a patient with familial HLH who received a haploidentical transplant using both mobilized peripheral blood and bone marrow stem cells in an attempt to overcome graft rejection by increasing the stem cell dose. The peripheral blood stem cell inoculum was CD34 enriched using a Cellpro column and T-cell depleted by Campath-1M, the patient received conditioning for a matched sibling donor transplant with the addition of Campath 1G. There was rapid and full engraftment and the patient remains disease free at 5 months. This technique may be applicable for other fatal inborn errors in the absence of an HLA-matched donor.     

Self-disclosure and liking: A meta-analytic review.

Self-disclosure plays a central role in the development and maintenance of relationships. One way that researchers have explored these processes is by studying the links between self-disclosure and liking. Using meta-analytic procedures, the present work sought to clarify and review this literature by evaluating the evidence for 3 distinct disclosure-liking effects. Significant disclosure-liking relations were found for each effect: (1) People who engage in intimate disclosures tend to be liked more than people who disclose at lower levels, (2) people disclose more to those whom they initially like, and (3) people like others as a result of having disclosed to them. In addition, the relation between disclosure and liking was moderated by a number of variables, including study paradigm, type of disclosure, and gender of the discloser. Taken together, these results suggest that various disclosure-liking effects can be integrated and viewed as operating together within a dynamic interpersonal system. Highly purified omega-3-polyunsaturated fatty acids for topical treatment of psoriasis. Results of a double-blind, placebo-controlled multicentre study

We report the results of a multicentre, double-blind, placebo-controlled study of topical therapy with omega-3-polyunsaturated fatty acids (omega-3-PUFA) in 52 patients suffering from moderate plaque-type psoriasis. In each patient, two similar stable psoriatic plaques served as indicator lesions for the study. One indicator lesion was randomly assigned to treatment with topical preparations of highly purified omega-3-PUFA in one of two concentrations (1 or 10%), and the other was treated with placebo. Efficacy assessment was based on changes in local psoriasis severity index, area involved, erythema, desquamation, induration and pruritus. After 8 weeks of treatment, all indicator lesions had improved significantly, compared with baseline. However, no statistically or clinically relevant differences between the omega-3-PUFA-treated and the placebo-treated lesions were found. Therapy was well tolerated and, apart from one patient who developed perilesional eczema, no clinically relevant adverse events occurred. In conclusion, topical omega-3-PUFA were not effective in a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind setting. Results of non-blind trials should be (re-)considered with caution.     

Fluorescence in situ hybridization mapping of the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) gene to 7q31.3

We have used the fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) technique to refine the localization of the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) gene on human chromosome 7. The result shows that the gene is most likely located within band q31.3.     

Wood adhesives based on tannin extracts from barks of some pine and spruce species

Barks available in commercial quantities in Australia and overseas have been examined for their efficacy as raw materials for conversion to high quality adhesives for reconstituted wood products. Previously bark from maturePinus radiata was found to be suitable. This paper examines the suitability of barks from four mature pine species (Pinus caribaea, Pinus elliottii, Pinus pinaster andPinus sylvestris), one young pine species (Pinus radiata) and one spruce species (Picea abies). Only the bark extracts ofPinus caribaea andPinus pinaster gave high quality (Type A bond, WBP) wood adhesives. The gluing properties of the adhesives derived from the extracts appeared to be dependent on their contents of formaldehyde-reactive polyflavanoids as indicated by their Stiasny values, with a value of 65% being the minimum for producing a high quality adhesive by the methods used.     

The UCLA Multidimensional Condom Attitudes Scale: Documenting the complex determinants of condom use in college students.

Describes the development and validation of the UCLA Multidimensional Condom Attitudes Scale (MCAS). The relationships between the MCAS and gender, sexual experience, intentions to use a condom, and past condom use were assessed. The MCAS has 5 distinct factors: (1) Reliability and Effectiveness of condoms, (2) the sexual Pleasure associated with condom use, (3) the stigma attached to persons who use condoms (Identity Stigma), (4) the Embarrassment About Negotiation and Use of condoms, and (5) the Embarrassment About the Purchase of condoms. Results strongly suggest that condom attitudes are multidimensional and thus cannot meaningfully be summed to a single global score. Results further indicate that men and women hold very different attitudes toward condoms. Implications of scale multidimensionality and directions for future research are discussed. The side chains responsible for the dimerization of the estradiol receptor by ionic bonds are lost in a 17 kDa fragment extending downstream from aa 303

Fragments of 32, 26 and 17 kDa of the porcine estradiol receptor were prepared, all of which contain the ligand-binding site. While dimers of the 32 and 26 kDa fragments like those of intact receptor can be dissociated by protonation, the dimer of the 17 kDa fragment obtained by trypsination of the 26 kDa fragment is resistant to lowering the pH from 7.0 to 6.5 and below. Its dissociation can be achieved by 0.5 M MgCl2 at pH 7.0. All fragments are recognized by the MAB 13H2 in Western blots. The antibody also reacts with native receptor and the three fragments, both in their monomer and dimer states. The combining ratios of antibody with receptor, or its fragments, in the monomer and dimer states and the weakening of the estradiol-receptor bond by antibody attachment support the back to back and head to toe model of receptor dimers.
