Patterns of knowledge production: The case of information and telecommunication sector in Korea

In recent years, the topic of knowledge production has been widely investigated in the advanced countries. However, the process by which knowledge is produced in the developing countries has not been fully explored or characterized. In Korea, the science and engineering fields strongly reflect systems of knowledge production in the universities and demonstrate the dynamics of systems of innovation for knowledge production. Through using a case study including data for knowledge production, in the field of information and telecommunication, the following general trends were observed. Firstly, there has been a trend towards increasing the capabilities for knowledge production, via domestic and foreign collaboration. Secondly, there has been an increasing trend towards the diversification of knowledge sources such as university-industry, and university-public research institutes. Finally, the establishment of a nation's knowledge base is influenced by governmental research and development policies. Synthesis and properties of polystyrene/graphite nanocomposites

In this paper, graphite/polystyrene nanocomposite is synthesized by in situ polymerization of styrene in a tetrahydrofuran (THF) solution system of potassium (K)-THF-graphite intercalation compound (GIC). K-THF-GIC has proved to initiate polymerization of styrene by the anionic mechanism. Due to the interfacial interaction between the graphite nanolayers and the polymer, the composites exhibit higher glass transition temperature and higher thermal stability when compared to polystyrene. The percolation threshold in the conductivity of the composites is lesser than 8.2 wt% and the dielectric constant can reach as high as 136.

利用Glejser检验方法拟舍出刀具磨损过程残差模型，在此基础上，计算换刀时刻的过程能力指数，并且根据企业所要求的最低过程能力指数，计算刀具的质量寿命，提出将刀具的切削寿命和质量寿命结合起来进行换刀决策的方法。     

Can Robots Manifest Personality?: An Empirical Test of Personality Recognition,Social Responses,and Social Presence in Human–Robot Interaction

Personality is an essential feature for creating socially interactive robots. Studies on this dimension will facilitate enhanced human–robot interaction (HRI). Using AIBO, a social robotic pet developed by Sony, we examined the issue of personality in HRI. In this gender-balanced 2 (AIBO personality: introvert vs. extrovert) by 2 (participant personality: introvert vs. extrovert) between-subject experiment (N = 48), we found that participants could accurately recognize a robot's personality based on its verbal and nonverbal behaviors. In addition, various complementarity attraction effects were found in HRI. Participants enjoyed interacting with a robot more when the robot's personality was complementary to their own personalities than when the robot's personality was similar to their own personalities. The same complementarity attraction effect was found in participants' evaluation of the robot's intelligence and social attraction. Participants' feelings of social presence during the interaction were a significant mediator for the complementarity attraction effects observed. Practical and theoretical implications of the current study for the design of social robots and the study of HRI were discussed.

A PIN diode controlled variable attenuator using a 0-dB branch-line coupler

We describe a simple PIN diode controlled variable attenuator that employs a 0-dB branch line directional coupler. The response of the attenuator was measured between 1.3 GHz and 2.6 GHz. At the center frequency, the attenuation monotonically varied from 0.7 dB to 23 dB with the control voltage, and the distributed branch-line coupler structure resulted in low input reflection. Our attenuator is easier to design, smaller in area than a double hybrid coupled attenuator, and has comparable or better reflection and attenuation performance characteristics.     

The neurotrophic analogue of ACTH(4-9) reduces the perineuronal microglial reaction after rat facial nerve crush

Rats bled to a severe condition of volume-controlled hemorrhagic shock were randomly assigned to one of the following treatments: (1) saline, 1 ml/kg i.v.; (2) saline, 0.2 ml/kg per min i.v. for 10 min; (3) ACTH-(1-24), 160 micrograms/kg i.v.; 4) methylprednisolone, 40 mg/kg i.v.; (5) methylprednisolone, 80 mg/kg i.v.; (6) aprotinin, 10,000 KIU/kg i.v.; (7) norepinephrine, 5 micrograms/kg per min i.v. for 10 min; (8) norepinephrine, 10 micrograms/kg per min i.v. for 10 min. All rats treated with saline or with either of the two doses of methylprednisolone, and half of the rats treated with aprotinin, died within the subsequent 2 h. On the other hand, rats treated with norepinephrine, at either dose, or with ACTH-(1-24) were all still alive 2 h later, a similar improvement in cardiovascular and respiratory parameters being obtained with the two treatments. The effect of ACTH on mean arterial pressure was however more sustained throughout the observation period. These results further support the potential usefulness of ACTH-(1-24) as first-aid treatment in cases of severe blood losses.     

Cat sera neutralize rotaviruses of serotype G3

Group A rotaviruses play an important role for the induction of gastroenteritis. Seroepidemiological studies evaluating the situation in humans have been performed previously. In this study data concerning the importance of group A rotavirus infections and the contribution of the most important serotypes are given for the domestic cat. 91% of the observed sera showed antibodies neutralizing serotype G 3. Antibodies with neutralizing properties directed against other important human serotypes could not be detected. The results obtained are discussed with respect to the formation of reassortant rotaviruses.     

Structure evolution of conductive polymer composites revealed by solvent vapor induced time-dependent percolation

The authors of this paper synthesized a series of amphiphilic triblock copolymers of polystyrene-b-poly(ethylene glycol)-b-polystyrene (PS-PEG-PS) having different PEG/PS ratios with nearly identical molecular weights of the entire copolymers. The interfacial interactions in the composites consisting of carbon black and the copolymers can thus be tailored. When these conducting composites are exposed to certain solvent vapors, their electrical resistances greatly increase, showing the gas sensitivity. The present work indicated that this switching behavior is controlled by the structural relaxation of the composites because matrix swelling acts as the main mechanism. The response time has been correlated with absolute temperature by Arrhenius equation, and the estimated activation energy reflects mobility of the fillers involved in the solvent induced expansion of the surrounding polymer. Therefore, by using the gas sensibility of the conductive composites, the structure evolution of the composite materials in solid state and the effect of filler/matrix interfacial interaction on the relaxation property of the matrix polymer has been inspected. It was found that lower activation energy represents stronger interfacial interaction in case good solvent of the matrix was used for the test.
