A prospective study on the occurrence of postoperative thrombosis of leg-veins and the possible influence of aescin in its prevention (author's transl)

Based on the frequency of subclinical, postoperative thrombosis which we detected using radio-iodine-tagged fibrinogen (125I-fibrinogen) in 2 comparable test groups of 100 female patients each, we were able to compare the effectiveness of Aescin (Reparil) to the untreated group. Whereas only 16 patients in the Reparil group were thrombose-positive we found 27 such cases in the control group. The analysis of these data shows Reparil to be of distinct advantage when compared to the untreated group.     

Studies on the functional ability of swine liver perfused with human blood in machine recirculation attempt. Experiment design, elimination of indocyanine green, galactose, bilirubin and ammonia, synthesis of urea, bile secretion

In 11 machine experiments of recirculation the abilities of survival and functioning of livers of dwarf pigs perfused with human preserved blood were tested with the help of the eliminations of indocyanine green, galactose, bilirubin and ammonia from a closed circulation. Further urea-nitrogen were measured as indicator of the urea synthesis and bile secretion. The perfusion of the animal livers was carried out in 9 cases only through the portal vein. The values of the blood flow were between 0.4 and 1.0ml pro g liver tissue and minute in portal pressure values about 15 cm water column. Two recirculations were carried out with additional flow through the hepatic artery with about 1/5 of the whole blood flow. The results of the experiments described prove a pretty good functional performance of the perfused with human blood livers of dwarf pigs during several hours. The different animal livers, however, showed at the beginning as well as during the further course of the perfusion clear differences concerning their functional capacity. Decrease of the blood flow values below 0.5 ml pro g liver tissue lead to functional loss. The additional flow through the hepatic artery yielded no better results, compared with the only perfusion of the animal liver through the portal vein.     

Severe glomerulonephritis complicated by coagulopathy: treatment with anticoaguland and immunosuppresive drugs

Serial determinations, using plasma fibrinogen gel chromatography as well as standard methodology, demonstrated that six children with severe glomerulonephritis, characterized on renal biopsy by glomerular necrosis and crescent formation, had persistent evidence of intravascular coagulation. Based on these observations, therapy with anticoagulants and azathicoagulants and azathioprine was instituted for one year; treatment with anticoagulants was continued for a second year. Anticoagulant therapy was initiated with heparin, followed by oral anticoagulation with phenindione and dipyridamole. In contrast to our earlier experience with similar patients, each of the present patients improved. Urinalyses returned to normal and glomerular filtration rates to near normal values in all patients at the end of the treatment period and have remained so for up to 3.9 years since treatment has been completed. Post-treatment biopsies showed remarkable improvement, with virtually no glomerulosclerosis even in patients who had had a high incidence of glomerular crescents before treatment. It is suggested that the therapeutic regimen favorably influenced the natural history of disease and that plasma fibrinogen chromatographic findings may be helpful in selecting patients likely to benefit from the use of anticoagulant therapy.     

Measles virus-induced migration inhibition in vitro of leukocytes from patients with multiple sclerosis

The migration inhibition in vitro induced by measles virus material on leukocytes from 17 patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) was compared with that of 8 patients with various other central nervous system diseases and that of 12 healthy blood donors. Significant differences could not be demonstrated. The results do not indicate that MS patients' leukocytes show an altered behaviour to measles virus material in the migration inhibition test.
