The effects of cooperative versus individualistic reward on students' intrinsic motivation were investigated. The controlling aspects of extrinsic reward may be heightened or produce greater ego threat in the individualistic situation when compared with a group situation. We predicted that students in the cooperative social situation would show higher levels of intrinsic motivation. Fifth-grade students from existing cooperative groups were assigned randomly to receive a tangible reward based on either cooperative or individualistic achievement for completing pattern block designs. Cooperation affected intrinsic motivation positively. Students in the cooperative dyad solved the block designs more quickly, interacted positively, and viewed the task as easier than did those in the individualistic situation, and they reported that their peers were helpful. There was little evidence that the controlling functions of reward or ego-threat were factors in producing the outcome. Some evidence supporting the importance of the social nature of cooperation was provided. 相似文献

Postoperative computed tomography (CT)-based dosimetric analysis of transperineal ultrasound-guided conformal prostate brachytherapy provides detailed information regarding the coverage and uniformity of the implant. However, there is no generally accepted standard for the optimal timing of the postoperative dosimetry. This report details dosimetric analysis and the effect of timing based upon CT and orthogonal film evaluation for ten unselected patients implanted with either iodine-125 (125I) or palladium-103 (103Pd). Within 2 hours after implantation, patients underwent a CT scan and the first of four sequential sets of orthogonal films. Subsequent orthogonal films were obtained on days 3, 14, and 28 postimplant. CT-based dosimetry revealed coverage of the prostate to the prescribed minimal peripheral dose (mPD) at 93.1 +/- 3.6% of the volume, the prostate volume receiving 150% of mPD was 38.2 +/- 8.7%, and the urethral and rectal doses were 114 +/- 12% and 78 +/- 19% of mPD, respectively. The implanted seeds seen on orthogonal films acted as markers for temporal changes in prostate dimensions, and the standard deviation of each dimension was used as input in an ellipsoidal volume calculation. Seed coordinates were self normalized to the center of gravity of each two-dimensional view and were measured relative to the linear regression line in the superior-inferior direction. The reproducibility of the anteroposterior (AP) film setup in terms of temporal variation in the angle of the regression line was markedly better than that of the lateral films, 1.8 degrees +/- 1.2 degrees vs. 4.3 degrees +/- 2.6 degrees, respectively. Dimensional contraction from day 0 to day 28 averaged 11.3% in the superior-inferior direction, 8.5% in the AP/PA (posteroanterior) direction, and 2.5% in the right-left lateral direction. This translated into a volume change of 20.9% (ranged 11.6-31.6%), which was determined by using the ellipsoid method. The half-life for edema resolution was 10.6 +/- 1.8 days (range 8.6-14.3 days). However, because of variability in the degree and extent of edema and its rate of resolution, we believe that it may be futile to define a single point in time as the most accurate indicator of the postoperative dose distribution. Rather, it may be preferable to accept universal standardization of timing and methodology for CT-based postoperative dosimetry, which would facilitate comparison of results between centers and maximize the information content of that single measurement. We conclude that day 0 represents the optimal time, because dosimetric evaluation at that time minimizes patient discomfort and inconvenience (a catheter is already in place), provides information about edema when it is near its maximum extent, and provides prompt closure of the learning loop and, as such, hopefully will result in improved implantation techniques and results. 相似文献

Dietary sodium restriction has a variety of effects on metabolism, including activation of the renin-angiotensin system. Angiotensin II has complex metabolic and cardiovascular effects, and these may be relevant to the effects of both nonpharmacological and pharmacological interventions in noninsulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM). We have assessed the effect of dietary sodium restriction on insulin sensitivity and endogenous glucose production in eight normotensive patients with diet-controlled NIDDM who underwent hyperinsulinemic clamp studies in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled cross-over protocol after two 4-day periods on sodium replete (160 mmol/day) and sodium deplete (40 mmol/day) diets. Mean +/- SD 24-h urinary sodium was 197 +/- 76.0 mmol (replete) and 67 +/- 19.5 mmol (deplete), P = 0.03. Insulin sensitivity was 42.0 +/- 11.3 mumol/kg.min (replete) and 37.0 +/- 11.6 mumol/kg.min (deplete), P = 0.04 (a reduction of 12%). Blood pressure was 130 +/- 21/78 +/- 11 mmHg (replete) and 128 +/- 12/73 +/- 10 mmHg (deplete). Dietary sodium restriction may result in a decrease in peripheral insulin sensitivity in normotensive patients with NIDDM, possibly via an elevation in prevailing angiotensin II concentrations. 相似文献

The authors present a case report involving an adolescent with trichotillomania who was treated with paroxetine. A significant reduction in symptoms was apparent after two weeks of treatment. HeLa cells exposed to cisplatin undergo cell death, presenting morphological and biochemical characteristics typical of apoptosis. In this study we demonstrate that this process is independent of RNA and protein synthesis, since it was not inhibited by actinomycin D or cycloheximide. These substances induced apoptosis by themselves, suggesting an unidentified short-lived inhibitor. The presence of Ca2+ chelators (EDTA and EGTA) did not have effect in this process, excluding the participation of extracellular Ca2+ access. Finally, zinc ions inhibited the low molecular weight DNA degradation and the apoptotic bodies production, but not cell death. The molecular dimensions of the potent chemical carcinogen dibenzo[def,p]chrysene, also known as dibenzo[a,l]pyrene, have been determined by X-ray diffraction methods. This analysis shows that the molecule is considerably distorted so that it is non-planar with an angle of 27.6 degrees between the outermost rings and a widening of C-C-C bond angles in the fjord region. The dimensions of the molecular distortion due to atomic overcrowding in the fjord region are presented. This polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon is a more potent carcinogen than is benzo[a]pyrene or its 11-methyl derivative. Comparisons of the distortions in dibenzo[a,l]pyrene with the geometries of various other polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons containing fjord- or bay-region methyl groups provide structural data on the ratio of angular to torsional distortion in such overcrowded molecules. 相似文献

By limiting galactosylation mechanisms, a cellular deficiency of the uridine sugar nucleotide, UDPgalactose, has been implicated as a cause of the long-term complications seen in patients with classic galactosemia despite dietary treatment. As a result, great interest has been generated in the accurate assessment of UDPgalactose, as well as UDPglucose, from which UDPgalactose may be derived by the function of a ubiquitous, active UDPgalactose-4-epimerase. Since several series of values for the concentration of these compounds in red blood cells (RBCs) of galactosemics have been flawed by the use of methods subsequently shown to be unsuitable, we have quantified erythrocyte UDPgalactose and UDPglucose levels by an accurate high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) assay in 116 normals, 76 galactosemics, and 39 patients with other metabolic disorders. These large groups have permitted the evaluation of age, diet, and genotype as influential factors in the steady-state RBC levels of the sugar nucleotides. The data show that age is an important determinant of RBC levels, with children younger than 10 years having higher values than individuals older than 10 years. Mean UDPgalactose levels in galactosemic children younger than 10 years and those older than 10 years were 30% and 18% lower, respectively, than levels in comparable normals. Although the mean differences were highly significant, there was considerable overlap of individual values. A double-recessed 0.2-μm-gate-length pseudomorphic HEMT (PHEMT) has been demonstrated with 500 mW of output power (833 mW/mm of gate periphery), 6-dB gain, and 35% power-added efficiency (PAE) at 32 GHz. At 44 GHz, the device exhibited 494 mW of output power (823 mW/mm), 4.3-dB gain, and 30% PAE. This level of performance is attributed to excellent MBE material, optimized epitaxial layer design, and the use of individual source vias and of double recess with tight channel dimensions. Recent studies have demonstrated that band 3 carries antigens of the Diego blood group system and have elucidated the molecular basis of several previously unassigned low incidence and high incidence antigens. Because the available serological data suggested that band 3 may carry additional low incidence blood group antigens, we screened band 3 genomic DNA encoding the membrane domain of band 3 for single-strand conformational polymorphisms. We found that the putative first ectoplasmic loop of band 3 carries blood group antigen ELO, 432 Arg-->Trp; the third putative loop harbors antigens Vga (Van Vugt), 555 Tyr-->His, BOW 561 Pro-->Ser, Wu (Wulfsberg), 565 Gly-->Ala, and Bpa (Bishop), 569 Asn-->Lys; and the putative fourth ectoplasmic loop carries antigens Hga (Hughes), 656 Arg-->Cys, and Moa (Moen), 656 Arg-->His. We studied erythrocytes from carriers of five of these blood group antigens. We found similar levels of reticulocyte mRNA corresponding to the two band 3 gene alleles, normal content and glycosylation of band 3 in the red blood cell membrane, and normal band 3-mediated sulfate influx into red blood cells, suggesting that the mutations do not have major effect on band 3 structure and function. In addition to elucidating the molecular basis of seven low incidence blood group antigens, these results help to create a more accurate structural model of band 3. 相似文献
