The propagation of waves in elastic solids at or near the incompressible limit is of interest in many current and emerging applications. Standard low-order Galerkin finite element discretization struggles with both incompressibility and wave dispersion. Galerkin least squares stabilization is known to improve computational performance of each of these ingredients separately. A novel approach of combined pressure-curl stabilization is presented, facilitating the use of continuous, equal-order interpolation of displacements and pressure. The pressure stabilization parameter is determined by stability considerations, while the curl stabilization parameter is determined by dispersion considerations. The proposed pressure-curl–stabilized scheme provides stable and accurate results on a variety of numerical tests for incompressible and nearly incompressible elastic waves computed with linear elements.  相似文献

Adults of the sugarcane rootstalk borer weevil, Diaprepes abbreviatus, form aggregations on citrus trees, where they feed on new foliage. The relative roles of male and female weevils, frass, food, and combinations of these odor sources in aggregation formation were studied using a y-tube olfactometer. Female and male D. abbreviatus were attracted by food, males, females, and female or male frass. Females were most often attracted by damaged food (broken green beans), whereas males were similarly attracted to damaged food and either female frass, male frass, or heterosexual pairs. No enhancement of attraction by either sex was found when males and male frass were combined with damaged food.  相似文献

This paper presents a comprehensive study on the use of Irwin's crack closure integral for direct evaluation of mixed‐mode stress intensity factors (SIFs) in curved crack problems, within the extended finite element method. The approach employs high‐order enrichment functions derived from the standard Williams asymptotic solution, and SIFs are computed in closed form without any special post‐processing requirements. Linear triangular elements are used to discretize the domain, and the crack curvature within an element is represented explicitly. An improved quadrature scheme using high‐order isoparametric mapping together with a generalized Duffy transformation is proposed to integrate singular fields in tip elements with curved cracks. Furthermore, because the Williams asymptotic solution is derived for straight cracks, an appropriate definition of the angle in the enrichment functions is presented and discussed. This contribution is an important extension of our previous work on straight cracks and illustrates the applicability of the SIF extraction method to curved cracks. The performance of the method is studied on several circular and parabolic arc crack benchmark examples. With two layers of elements enriched in the vicinity of the crack tip, striking accuracy, even on relatively coarse meshes, is obtained, and the method converges to the reference SIFs for the circular arc crack problem with mesh refinement. Furthermore, while the popular interaction integral (a variant of the J‐integral method) requires special auxiliary fields for curved cracks and also needs cracks to be sufficiently apart from each other in multicracks systems, the proposed approach shows none of those limitations. A key challenge while employing non‐interpolatory basis functions in finite‐element methods is the robust imposition of Dirichlet boundary conditions. The current work studies the weak enforcement of such conditions for B‐spline basis functions, with application to both second‐ and fourth‐order problems. This is achieved using concepts borrowed from Nitsche's method, which is a stabilized method for imposing constraints on surfaces. Conditions for the stability of the system of equations are derived for each class of problem. Stability parameters in the Nitsche weak form are then evaluated by solving a local generalized eigenvalue problem at the Dirichlet boundary. The approach is designed to work equally well when the grid used to build the splines conforms to the physical boundary of interest as well as to the more general case when it does not. AdultMaladera matrida Argaman (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Melolonthinae) males emerge from soil for an active period at dusk, a few minutes before the females. Adults are found during most of the active hours on the foliage in aggregations composed of an equal sex ratio. The mechanism of aggregation behavior ofM. matrida beetles was studied in a Y-shaped olfactometer. No evidence was found for the existence of an aggregation pheromone released either by males or by females, but behavior tests indicate that adultM. matrida beetles, males as well as females, are attracted to volatiles of an injured host plant. The following scenario is suggested: Males emerge daily from soil at dusk, a few minutes before the females, and immediately start feeding. Additional males are attracted to the injured host's volatiles and form aggregations. When females emerge from soil, the attractant volatiles are concentrated in spots, and the females join the aggregations, forming an equal sex ratio.  相似文献

We describe a novel variational formulation of inverse elasticity problems given interior data. The class of problems considered is rather general and includes, as special cases, plane deformations, compressibility and incompressiblity in isotropic materials, 3D deformations, and anisotropy. The strong form of this problem is governed by equations of pure advective transport. The variational formulation is based on a generalization of the adjoint‐weighted variational equation (AWE) formulation, originally developed for flow of a passive scalar. We describe how to apply AWE to various cases, and prove several properties. We prove that the Galerkin discretization of the AWE formulation leads to a stable, convergent numerical method, and prove optimal rates of convergence. The numerical examples demonstrate optimal convergence of the method with mesh refinement for multiple unknown material parameters, graceful performance in the presence of noise, and robust behavior of the method when the target solution is C, C0, or discontinuous. A computer-based method for the assessment of body-image distortions in anorexia nervosa and other eating-disorder patients is presented in this paper. At the core of the method is a realistic pictorial simulation of lifelike weight changes, applied to a real source image of the patient. The patients, using a graphical user interface, adjust their body shapes until they meet their self-perceived appearance. Measuring the extent of virtual fattening or slimming of a body with respect to its real shape and size allows direct quantitative evaluation of the cognitive distortion in body image. In a preliminary experiment involving 33 anorexia-nervosa patients, 70% of the subjects chose an image with simulated visual weight gain between 8%-16% as their "real" body image, while only one of them recognized the original body image. In a second experiment involving 30 healthy participants, the quality of the weight modified images was evaluated by pairwise selection trials. Over a weight change range from -16% to +28%, in about 30% of the trials, artificially modified images were mistakenly taken as "original" images, thus demonstrating the quality of the artificial images. The authors are presenting here a method to correct 2 errors on the 56 bits header of a data packet conveyed on a satellite link at a 34 Mbit/s rate. The error correction function is performed by a bch (63, 51) code,truncated to (56, 44) by obliteration of 7 unused bits. By the means of pre-calculated tables made of high integrated rom memories, and using an octet based computation, the correction function can be performed in less than one microsecond at the 34 Mbit/s transmission rate.  相似文献

We develop formulations for finite element computation of exterior acoustics problems. A prominent feature of the formulations is the lack of integration over the unbounded domain, simplifying the task of discretization and potentially leading to numerous additional benefits. These formulations provide a suitable basis for hybrid asymptotic-numerical methods in scattering, non-reflecting boundary conditions and infinite elements. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The Duffy blood group system is of clinical and biological significance. Antibodies to Duffy antigens are responsible for some cases of transfusion incompatibility and newborn hemolytic disease. The Duffy protein is a receptor for the Plasmodium vivax erythrocyte-binding protein and is also a receptor for various chemokines (thus renamed Duffy Antigen Receptor for Chemokines [DARC]). The two Duffy polymorphic antigens, Fya and Fyb (coded by the FY*A and FY*B alleles), are present on erythrocyte membranes. The Fy(a-b-) phenotype is the predominant one in populations of black people and also occurs in other populations, including some non-Ashkenazi Jewish groups. The Fy(a-b-) phenotype has been associated with a mutation in the FY*B promoter at the GATA box that abolishes the expression of erythrocyte Duffy protein. We describe here a novel mutation, present in the FY*B coding sequence (271C --> T), that is associated with some Fy(b-) phenotypes among non-Ashkenazi Jews and among Brazilian blacks. The mutation is present in Fy(b-) individuals, who have wild-type FY*B GATA and carry the previously described 304G --> A substitution. The 271C --> T and 304G --> A can be identified by restriction enzyme-generated restriction fragment length polymorphisms. The 271C --> T substitution represents a considerable change in chemical nature (Arg91 --> Cys), one which may affect the antigenic determinants of DARC, and thus be of clinical significance. The mutation may have implications for some physiological roles of DARC and be of interest in malaria research and in studies of population genetics.  相似文献
