The use of carbon dioxide (CO2) and calcium-containing by-products from industrial activities is receiving increasing interest as a route to valuable carbonate materials while reducing CO2 emissions and saving natural resources. In this work, wet-chemical experimental data was assessed, which involved the carbonation of three types of materials in aqueous solutions, namely, 1) wollastonite, a calcium silicate mineral, 2) steelmaking slag, a by-product of steel production, and 3) paper bottom ash (PBA) from waste paper incineration. Aims were to achieve either a high carbonation degree and/or a pure carbonate product with potential commercial value. Producing a pure precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) material that may find use in paper industry products puts strong requirements on purity and brightness. The parameters investigated were particle size, CO2 pressure, temperature, solid/liquid ratio, and the use of additives that affect the solubilities of CO2 and/or calcium carbonate. Temperatures and pressures were varied up to 180°C and 4 MPa. Data obtained with the wollastinite mineral allowed for a comparison between natural resources and the industrial by-product materials, the latter typically being more reactive. With respect to temperature and pressure trends reported by others were largely confirmed, with temperatures above 150°C introducing thermodynamic limitations depending on CO2 pressure. The influence of additives showed some promise, although costs may make recycling and reuse of additives a necessity for a large-scale process. When using steelmaking slag, magnetic separation may remove some iron-containing material from the process (although this is far from perfect), while the addition of bicarbonate supported the removal of phosphorous, aside from improving calcium extraction. The experiments with paper bottom ash (PBA) gave new data, showing that its reactivity resembles that of steelmaking slag, while its composition results in relatively pure carbonate product. Mountaintop coal mining (MCM) in the Southern Appalachian forest region greatly impacts both soil and aquatic ecosystems. Policy and practice currently in place emphasize water quality and soil stability but do not consider upland soil health. Here we report soil organic carbon (SOC) measurements and other soil quality indicators for reclaimed soils in the Southern Appalachian forest region to quantify the health of the soil ecosystem. The SOC sequestration rate of the MCM soils was 1.3 MgC ha(-1) yr(-1) and stocks ranged from 1.3 ± 0.9 to 20.9 ± 5.9 Mg ha(-1) and contained only 11% of the SOC of surrounding forest soils. Comparable reclaimed mining soils reported in the literature that are supportive of soil ecosystem health had SOC stocks 2.5-5 times greater than the MCM soils and sequestration rates were also 1.6-3 times greater. The high compaction associated with reclamation in this region greatly reduces both the vegetative rooting depth and infiltration of the soil and increases surface runoff, thus bypassing the ability of soil to naturally filter groundwater. In the context of environmental sustainability of MCM, it is proposed that the entire watershed ecosystem be assessed and that a revision of current policy be conducted to reflect the health of both water and soil.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Dietary plant materials have attracted much attention because of their health benefits to humans. Acrylamide is found in various heated carbohydrate‐rich foods. Our previous results showed that crude aqueous extracts from diverse dietary plants and some phenolic compounds could mitigate acrylamide formation in an asparagine–glucose model system. Based on our previous study, several plant materials were selected to further investigate their inhibitory effects on acrylamide formation in cookies and starch‐based model systems. RESULTS: Addition of raw powders from selected dietary plants and their crude aqueous extracts could considerably reduce acrylamide formation in both cookie and potato starch‐based models. Aqueous extracts of clove at 4% caused the largest reduction (50.9%) of acrylamide in cookies, whereas addition of 2% proanthocyanidins from grape seeds gave the greatest acrylamide reduction (62.2%) in a starch‐based model system. CONCLUSION: It may be feasible to use some of the tested dietary plant materials to reduce acrylamide formation in cookies and other starchy foods. Reviews clinical and experimental analyses of hysterical conversion reactions of blindness. A model is offered to account for the visually controlled behavior of the psychogenically blind. The model attributes a central role to motivational factors in determining selective nonawareness of cognition. A case study of hypnotic blindness is presented that illustrates the utility of the model. The model has implications for interpretations of other hypnotic phenomena and for views concerning the relations between cognition and awareness. Background: The major source of catheter‐associated bacteremia is contamination of the catheter hub during connection–disconnection procedures. A new method of catheter locking has been developed wherein anticoagulant is injected first, followed by a 0.1‐mL air bubble and 0.9 mL of bactericidal solution. The anticoagulant is then located at the catheter tip and the bactericidal solution is located at the catheter hub. The air bubble prevents mixing of the two solutions. The bactericidal solution was acidified concentrated saline (ACS). The 27% saline solution has a pH of 2.0. ACS was chosen because it is theoretically harmless if injected in the amount used to lock the catheter lumens. The goals of this pilot study were to determine whether the new method of catheter locking is easy to perform with available syringes and whether eventual injection of the experimental solution is well tolerated. Methods: Ten patients were randomly assigned, either to heparin lock (5 patients, 62 treatments) or air‐bubble method (5 patients, 56 treatments). In the control group, the catheters were locked with heparin, 5000 U/mL. In the experimental group, the catheters were locked with heparin, air bubble, and ACS. Altogether, the lumens were overfilled by 0.2 mL. Results: Compared to the routine method, the experimental method required a 1‐ to 2‐min‐longer procedure time. There were no errors in proper sequence of injections into the lumina. There were no episodes of bacteremia related to hub contamination in either group. In the air‐bubble group, there was one case of bacteremia associated with purulent drainage from the exit and the same organism in both cultures. In three instances in each group, the locking solution could not be aspirated and was injected without any subjective symptoms or objective signs. Conclusion: We conclude that the air‐bubble method of locking central‐vein catheters is easy to perform. In three instances of air‐bubble and ACS injection, there were no adverse effects. A full‐scale prospective randomized study is feasible and warranted.  相似文献

Three experiments, presented within the framework of Activity Theory, deal with the relationship between adult learners' questions and subsequent comprehension in a tutorial learning setting. Students were first given verbal instructions (acquisition) to a novel card game and then asked to play one hand with the teacher (implementation). In Experiment 1, there was no correlation between number of questions asked during acquisition and comprehension, but questions during implementation were negatively correlated with comprehension. In Experiment 2, learners whose questions were answered during acquisition scored higher than those whose questions were not answered. In Experiment 3, learners whose questions were answered during implementation showed greater gains in comprehension than those whose questions were answered during acquisition. Individual differences in question-asking during implementation but not acquisition were significantly related to comprehension. The results confirm the view that questions answered during knowledge implementation more effectively aid comprehension than those answered during acquisition. Annual growth increments were calculated for blue catfish (Ictalurus furcatus) and flathead catfish (Pylodictis olivaris) from the lower Mississippi River (LMR) to assess hypothesized relationships between fish growth and floodplain inundation as predicted by the Flood‐Pulse Concept. Variation in catfish growth increment was high for all age classes of both species, and growth increments were not consistently related to various measures of floodplain inundation. However, relationships became stronger, and usually direct, when water temperature was integrated with area and duration of floodplain inundation. Relationships were significant for four of six age classes for blue catfish, a species known to utilize floodplain habitats. Though similar in direction, relationships were weaker for flathead catfish, which is considered a more riverine species. Our results indicate the Flood‐Pulse Concept applies more strongly to temperate floodplain‐river ecosystems when thermal aspects of flood pulses are considered. We recommend that future management of the LMR should consider ways to ‘recouple’ the annual flood and thermal cycles. An adaptive management approach will allow further determination of important processes affecting fisheries production in the LMR. Copyright © 2006 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Uses principles of latent trait theory to derive conditions under which mean differences on an observed variable are indicative of mean differences on an underlying construct, focusing on the logistic curve as a model for describing the relation between the observed variable and construct. To examine the potential application of microbial transglutaminase (MTGase) in oriental noodle making, the effects of various MTGase addition levels on the rheological, textural and structural properties of noodles were investigated using good quality (‘Red Bicycle’) and poor quality (‘Sandow’) wheat flours. Addition of MTGase at 5–20 g kg?1 levels, but not at 1 g kg?1 level, to the two different wheat flours decreased rapid visco‐analyser (RVA) parameters of hot paste viscosity and final viscosity while increasing breakdown. For fresh white salted noodle dough sheets, the storage modulus (G′) and loss modulus (G″) increased significantly at 1 g kg?1 MTGase addition for both types of flour, but there was no clear trend with higher levels of MTGase. For dried white salted noodles, textural parameters (tensile force, hardness and gumminess) generally increased, cooking loss was little affected and the yield of the cooked noodle was significantly decreased by MTGase. Color was slightly adversely affected. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) results indicated that physical properties of dry noodles were improved through the formation of cross‐links [ε‐(γ‐glutamyl)lysine] by MTGase.
