A numerical method for simulation of microscale radiation effects in insect thin-film structures is described. Accounting for solar beam and diffuse radiation, the model calculates the reflectivity and emissivity of such structures. A case study examines microscale radiation effects in butterfuly wings, and results reveal a new function of these multilayer thin films: thermal regulation. For film thicknesses of the order of 0.10 μm, solar absorption levels vary by as much as 25% with small changes in film thickness; for certain existing structures, absorption levels reach 96%., This is attributed to the spectral distribution of the reflected radiation, which consists of a singular reflectance peak within the solar spectrum.  相似文献

The mechanism of catecholamine (CA) release induced by transmural stimulation (TS) and the participation of acetylcholine (ACh) in this mechanism were studied using isotonic contraction of excised vas defernse of rats. Furthermore, the inhibitory effect of bretylium (Br) on sympathetic activity was observed. Results: 1) The effects of various kinds of drugs on isotonic contractions induced by TS, exogenous ACh and exogenous noradrenaline (NA) were observed with the results shown in Table 1. The following has been concluded: (1) TS-induced contraction is due to stimulation of the endings of hypogastric nerve (sympathetic nerve), resulting in CA release from adrenergic fiber (AF) and ACh release from cholinergic fiber (CF) in this nerve. (2) The participation of ACh is not indispensable in the CA release from AF induced by TS. (3) Endogenous ACh release from CF by TS brings about CA release under eserine application. (4) CA release by exogenous ACh is not inhibited by ganglion blockade, but is inhibited by atropine, indicating the muscarinic receptor to be in AF endings. 2) Br exerted preferentially the irreversible inhibition on CA release from AF rather than that on ACh release from CF, while it caused a mild reversible inhibition on CA release by exogenous ACh. 3) On the TS contraction that had been abolished irreversibly by Br, NA incubation showed a mild lasting recovery, while methamphetamine (MAP) or calcium (Ca) incubation showed a strong lasting recovery. Furthermore, in this recovery of TS contraction, the incubation with NA or MAP exerted only the recovery of CA release while the Ca incubation exerted the recovery of both CA release and ACH release. It would appear that Br blocks both AF and CF by inhibiting the transmitter-releasing action of Ca.  相似文献

Nuclear waste can be vitrified by mixing it with glass‐forming and ‐modifying additives. The resulting feed is charged into an electric glass melter. To comprehend melting behavior of a high‐alumina melter feed, we monitored the volume expansion of pellets in response to heating at different heating rates. The feeds were prepared with different particle sizes of quartz (the major additive component) and with varied silica‐to‐fluxes ratio to investigate the glass melt viscosity effects. Also, we used additional melter feeds with additives premelted into glass frit. The volume of pellets was nearly constant at temperatures <600°C. After a short period of volume shrinkage at ~600°C‐700°C, foam generation produced massive volume expansion. The low heat conductivity of foam hinders the transfer of heat from molten glass to the reacting feed. The extent of foaming increased with faster heating and higher melt viscosity, and decreased with increasing size of quartz particles and fritting of the additives. Volume expansion data are needed for the mathematical modeling of the cold cap.  相似文献

Fiske et al (see record 1992-07509-001) praising the American Psychological Association's (APA's) amicus brief to the Supreme Court addressing gender stereotyping. The consensus of the experts in the area of gender stereotyping, which includes neither Barrett nor Morris, places their perspective as deviant. Migration of mature B lymphocytes within secondary lymphoid organs and recirculation between these sites are thought to allow B cells to obtain T cell help, to undergo somatic hypermutation, to differentiate into effector cells, and to home to sites of antibody production. The mechanisms that direct migration of B lymphocytes are unknown, but there is evidence that G protein-coupled receptors, and possibly chemokine receptors, may be involved. Stromal cell- derived factor (SDF)-1alpha is a CXC chemokine previously characterized as an efficacious chemoattractant for T lymphocytes and monocytes in peripheral blood. Here we show with purified tonsillar B cells that SDF-1alpha also attracts naive and memory, but not germinal center (GC) B lymphocytes. Furthermore, GC B cells could be converted to respond to SDF-1alpha by in vitro differentiation into memory B lymphocytes. Conversely, the migratory response in naive and memory B cells was significantly reduced after B cell receptor engagement and CD40 signaling. The receptor for SDF-1, CXC chemokine receptor 4 (CXCR4), was found to be expressed on responsive as well as unresponsive B cell subsets, but was more rapidly downregulated on responsive cells by ligand. Finally, messenger RNA for SDF-1 was detected by in situ hybridization in a layer of cells surrounding the GC. These findings show that responsiveness to the chemoattractant SDF-1alpha is regulated during B lymphocyte activation, and correlates with positioning of B lymphocytes within a secondary lymphoid organ.  相似文献

Results of 2 experimental studies in which job incumbents were said to be applying for promotions to traditionally male positions demonstrated bias against mothers in competence expectations and in screening recommendations. This bias occurred regardless of whether the research participants were students (Study 1) or working people (Study 2). Although anticipated job commitment, achievement striving, and dependability were rated as generally lower for parents than for nonparents, anticipated competence was uniquely low for mothers. Mediational analyses indicated that, as predicted, negativity in competence expectations, not anticipated job commitment or achievement striving, promoted the motherhood bias in screening recommendations; expected deficits in agentic behaviors, not in dependability, were found to fuel these competence expectations. These findings suggest that motherhood can indeed hinder the career advancement of women and that it is the heightened association with gender stereotypes that occurs when women are mothers that is the source of motherhood's potentially adverse consequences. The effects of local anesthetic agents (lidocaine, procaine, cocaine) and diphenylhydantoin (DPH) were studied on the slow electrical responses induced by isoproterenol or caffeine in cardiac muscle preparations rendered inexcitable by tetrodotoxin (TTX) or by partial depolarization with elevated K+ (26 mM). In such inexcitable cells, we previously demonstrated that addition of some positive inotropic agents, such as catecholamines, histamine, and methylxanthines, rapidly increase the number of available slow Ca2+--Na+ channels, thus allowing slowly rising electrical responses resembling the plateau component of the cardiac action potential. In embryonic chick (16-20-day-old) myocardial cells (ventricular) studied as intact perfused hearts or as reaggregated cell cultures of trypsin-dispersed cells, high concentrations (10-(3) M) of all of the above drugs blocked the induced slow responses with their associated contractions; low concentrations (10-(5) M) of these agents reduced the maximal rate of rise (+Vmax) of the slow responses and depressed the contractions. For comparison with their effects on the slow response, the actions of these drugs on the normal action potential were also studied. As with the slow response, all of these drugs depressed the rate of rise of the action potential (10-(4) M) or blocked it at higher concentrations (10-(3) M); in contrast, low concentrations (10-(5) M) of lidocaine and DPH increased +V max. These findings suggest that local anesthetics, which interact with the lipid phase of the cell membrane, lead to blockade of the slow Ca2+--Na+ channels as well as of the fast Na+ channels in the myocardial sarcolemma.  相似文献
