Cephalopods employ their chromomorphic skins for rapid and versatile active camouflage and signalling effects. This is achieved using dense networks of pigmented, muscle-driven chromatophore cells which are neurally stimulated to actuate and affect local skin colouring. This allows cephalopods to adopt numerous dynamic and complex skin patterns, most commonly used to blend into the environment or to communicate with other animals. Our ultimate goal is to create an artificial skin that can mimic such pattern generation techniques, and that could produce a host of novel and compliant devices such as cloaking suits and dynamic illuminated clothing. This paper presents the design, mathematical modelling and analysis of a dynamic biomimetic pattern generation system using bioinspired artificial chromatophores. The artificial skin is made from electroactive dielectric elastomer: a soft, planar-actuating smart material that we show can be effective at mimicking the actuation of biological chromatophores. The proposed system achieves dynamic pattern generation by imposing simple local rules into the artificial chromatophore cells so that they can sense their surroundings in order to manipulate their actuation. By modelling sets of artificial chromatophores in linear arrays of cells, we explore the capability of the system to generate a variety of dynamic pattern types. We show that it is possible to mimic patterning seen in cephalopods, such as the passing cloud display, and other complex dynamic patterning.  相似文献

A new chiral derivatization procedure for the HPLC resolution of chiral catecholamines and structurally related compounds is described. The homochiral reagent, (+)-(R)-1-phenylethyl isocyanate (RPEIC), was added to separate and quantitate the enantiomers of rac-5,6-dihydroxy-2-methyl-aminotetralin, the main metabolite of rac-5, 6-diisobutyryl-2-methyl-aminotetralin, a potent dopamine agonist, by reversed-phase HPLC analysis. To avoid catecholamine degradation in the basic reaction medium and to obtain the selective and quantitative derivatization of the amino group of the compound, the reversible complex formation between diphenylborinic acid (DPBA) and the catechol group, in alkaline medium, was performed before homochiral isocyanate addition. The RPEIC derivatization was completed in 30 min and then the DPBA complex was dissociated by adding dilute acid. The structure of intermediates and urea derivatives was confirmed by mass spectometry. The use of an electrochemical detector, operating in redox mode, allowed HPLC quantitation of enantiomers at the nanogram level in plasma and urine. The derivatization procedure is also suitable for other catecholamine-related compounds.  相似文献

Expression of the Drosophila cell adhesion molecule neuroglian in S2 cells leads to cell aggregation and the intracellular recruitment of ankyrin to cell contact sites. We localized the region of neuroglian that interacts with ankyrin and investigated the mechanism that limits this interaction to cell contact sites. Yeast two-hybrid analysis and expression of neuroglian deletion constructs in S2 cells identified a conserved 36-amino acid sequence that is required for ankyrin binding. Mutation of a conserved tyrosine residue within this region reduced ankyrin binding and extracellular adhesion. However, residual recruitment of ankyrin by this mutant neuroglian molecule was still limited to cell contacts, indicating that the lack of ankyrin binding at noncontact sites is not caused by tyrosine phosphorylation. A chimeric molecule, in which the extracellular domain of neuroglian was replaced with the corresponding domain from the adhesion molecule fasciclin II, also selectively recruited ankyrin to cell contacts. Thus, outside-in signaling by neuroglian in S2 cells depends on extracellular adhesion, but does not depend on any unique property of its extracellular domain. We propose that the recruitment of ankyrin to cell contact sites depends on a physical rearrangement of neuroglian in response to cell adhesion, and that ankyrin binding plays a reciprocal role in stabilizing the adhesive interaction.  相似文献

The development of dark matter ionization/thermal hybrid detectors using silicon requires substrate material in which good charge collection can be achieved at low applied voltages (typically <3 V) and low temperature (typically <300 mK). Presented are results from studies of the effect of material purity on the charge collection efficiency and sensitive volume of Si ionization detectors, fabricated with low resistance contacts and operated at low temperature and bias. Samples of float-zone hypercube Si with four-point room temperature resistivities of 6, 15, 90, and 140 kΩ-cm were used. At applied voltages below 3 V improved detector characteristics were observed with the higher resistivity material. In particular, at 1 V bias a detector of 0.5-mm thickness using 140-kΩ-cm material achieved a factor of two times greater charge collection than a similar detector using 6-Ω-cm material  相似文献

Airway inflammation is believed to stimulate mucus production in asthmatic patients. Increased mucus secretion is an important clinical symptom and contributes to airway obstruction in asthma. Activated CD4 Th1 and Th2 cells have both been identified in airway biopsies of asthmatics but their role in mucus production is not clear. Using CD4 T cells from mice transgenic for the OVA-specific TCR, we studied the role of Th1 and Th2 cells in airway inflammation and mucus production. Airway inflammation induced by Th2 cells was comprised of eosinophils and lymphocytes; features found in asthmatic patients. Additionally, there was a marked increase in mucus production in mice that received Th2 cells and inhaled OVA, but not in mice that received Th1 cells. However, OVA-specific Th2 cells from IL-4-deficient mice were not recruited to the lung and did not induce mucus production. When this defect in homing was overcome by administration of TNF-alpha, IL-4 -/- Th2 cells induced mucus as effectively as IL-4 +/+ Th2 cells. These studies establish a role for Th2 cells in mucus production and dissect the effector functions of IL-4 in these processes. These data suggest that IL-4 is crucial for Th2 cell recruitment to the lung and for induction of inflammation, but has no direct role in mucus production.  相似文献

The molecular mechanisms that contribute to an eosinophil-rich airway inflammation in asthma are unclear. A predominantly T helper 2 (Th2)-type cell response has been documented in allergic asthma. Here we show that mice deficient in the p50 subunit of nuclear factor (NF)- kappaB are incapable of mounting eosinophilic airway inflammation compared with wild-type mice. This deficiency was not due to a block in T cell priming or proliferation in the p50(-/-) mice, nor was it due to a defect in the expression of the cell adhesion molecules VCAM-1 and ICAM-1 that are required for the extravasation of eosinophils into the airways. The major defects in the p50(-/-) mice were the lack of production of the Th2 cytokine interleukin 5 and the chemokine eotaxin, which are crucial for proliferation and for differentiation and recruitment, respectively, of eosinophils into the asthmatic airway. Additionally, the p50(-/-) mice were deficient in the production of the chemokines macrophage inflammatory protein (MIP)-1alpha and MIP-1beta that have been implicated in T cell recruitment to sites of inflammation. These results demonstrate a crucial role for NF-kappaB in vivo in the expression of important molecules that have been implicated in the pathogenesis of asthma.  相似文献

We investigated the extinguishing properties of multipurpose dry chemicals using openregime cribs of two sizes. One measured 20.3 by 20.3 by 15.2 cm, and the other 50.8 by 50.8 by 38 cm. A crib fire, which has both flaming and smoldering contributions, is primarily extinguished when the burning surfaces are covered or smothered by a gas phase of the original multipurpose agent or a product of the agent's decomposition. The overall effectiveness of each dry chemical depends on its particle size, the degree of its decomposition and/or vaporization, and the openness of the crib. All particles of an agent below a unique limiting size completely decompose and/or vaporize in the crib fire and have the same extinguishing effectiveness. Particles above the limit have no measurable effectiveness. Three Tertiary lignites have been oxidized with nitrobenzene and sodium hydroxide at 200 °C in a sealed tube. A scheme of extraction has been used to separate the oxidation products and the resulting solutions have been characterized by their infra-red and ultraviolet absorption spectra and by spot tests. The products contain phenolic hydroxyl and carbonyl — rather than carboxyl — groups. Some of the solutions have been reduced and their n.m.r. spectra recorded. The oxidation procedure shows promise as a method of determining the structure of lignites.  相似文献
