Benefits to 0+ fishes of connecting man‐made waterbodies to the lower River Trent,England

Floodplain waterbodies are reputed to enhance recruitment of riverine fish populations via provision of spawning and nursery habitat, refuge from floods, and increased availability of planktonic food resources compared with main river channels. Notwithstanding, there have been few parallel studies of fishes and their food resources at both main river and floodplain sites. Thus, this study investigated the 0+ fishes, zooplankton and phytoplankton (chlorophyll a) at four main river and four (man‐made) floodplain sites on the lower River Trent, England, between May 1999 and October 2004 inclusive. All sites shared the same key fish species, and there were no consistent differences in the densities, growth or condition of 0+ fishes from main river and floodplain sites. Similarly, all sites shared the same key zooplankton taxa. However, zooplankton densities, notably of large‐bodied cladocerans, and chlorophyll a concentrations, were significantly higher at floodplain sites than at main river sites. Thus, connection of man‐made waterbodies has the potential to enhance recruitment of riverine fish populations via provision of important spawning and nursery habitat, and superior feeding opportunities for 0+ fishes compared with main river channels. Insight into the chemical reaction of CH2OH with NO: Formation of N-hydroxy formamide as an isocyanic acid precursor

This study has explored the potential energy surface on the chemical reaction of CH₂OH with NO by using ab initio calculation. We have found the new reaction pathway producing N-hydroxy formamide, which can further decompose to generate isocyanic acid as a reducing agent of hydrocarbons selective catalytic reduction.     

Improvement of the technology for obtaining pigment-free brightly colored glazes

A new method of coloring glazes is proposed on the basis of improvements in the technology for obtaining brightly colored glass coatings. The method consists of a complex of physical-chemical processes (adsorption, ion-exchange, and precipitation) which already occur at the stage of preparation of the glaze slips, containing water-soluble salts of variable-valence metals, which imparts intense and uniform color and high-quality to calcined glass coatings. __________ Translated from Steklo i Keramika, No. 3, pp. 21–22, March, 2007.     

Mean value analysis of closed queueing networks with Erlang service time distributions

The classical mean value analysis approach is extended to single class closed queueing networks containing Erlang service time distributions and FCFS scheduling disciplines. A new formula for the mean residence time of jobs is derived. Each iteration provides self-checks for validity, and is repeated whenever invalid results are detected. On the average, the solutions obtained vary by less than five percent from their respective simulation results.     

Performance characteristics of parallel resonant convertor

Using a set of characteristic curves derived from the stateplane analysis, a novel approach to the design of the parallel resonant convertor (PRC) is presented. It will be shown that the steady-state response of the convertor can also be obtained from these characteristic curves     

Development of sealing compositions with nanostructure iron-based fillers

The possibility of utilizing nanopowders of iron and Fe-Co-Ni produced bu a thermochemical method in the fabrication of sealing composition materials is investigated.
