Previous studies suggest that rats might be able to discriminate between sucrose and fructose, but no previous study has examined this possibility in much detail. Rats were conditioned to avoid either sucrose or fructose by injecting them with lithium chloride when they drank these substances. Control rats were given the same injections but were not exposed to either sugar during training. After training, the rats were given a choice of fructose vs. sucrose. Data from control rats provided information about the relative taste intensity of the sugars. If the sugars possess only a single gustatory quality, control rats should prefer the sweeter sugar; under this assumption, sucrose appears to be two-four times sweeter than fructose. The two sugars share a common taste because rats trained to avoid sucrose avoided fructose when the fructose concentration was much greater than the sucrose concentration. Nevertheless, the two sugars are discriminable because, when the apparent sweetness of the sugars was matched, rats showed a greater aversion to the sugar they were trained to avoid. Aversions to sucrose and fructose also generalized to maltodextrins, but sucrose may have a somewhat greater maltodextrin flavor than does fructose. It is proposed that the biological function of maltodextrin taste is to allow animals to sense the ratio of glucose to fructose in foods. 相似文献

We have recently reported that thymic B lymphocytes (TBL) are the first B-cell subpopulation undergoing isotype switching to IgG and IgA during embryonic life. The aim of this study is to analyze the influence of antigenic stimulation on TBL location and activity using a germ-free (GF) newborn pig model, in which maternal antibodies and antigens do not affect B-cell development. Immunohistological analysis showed that TBL were disseminated mainly in the thymic medulla. There were no differences in the distribution of TBL, both in GF newborn piglets before and after colonization with Escherichia coli and in older conventionally reared (CONV) piglets. The number of immunoglobulin (Ig)-secreting cells measured by the ELISPOT method was not influenced by microflora and food antigens. IgM-positive cells secreting IgM and CD45RC-positive cells spontaneously producing IgM, IgG, and IgA were detected in newborn thymus. Our findings suggest that TBL differentiation and Ig switching to IgG and IgA-secreting cells is not influenced by external antigens and that the thymic microenvironment plays an important role in this process. 相似文献

We have used a plasmid containing the argB gene to transform an Aspergillus nidulans argB-deleted strain in the presence of restriction enzymes and show a 20- to 60-fold increase in transformation frequency via restriction enzyme-mediated integration (REMI). This procedure was used to try to tag new genes involved in the asexual development of this fungus. More than 2000 transformants isolated following electroporation of conidia and approximately 3700 transformants recovered following protoplast fusion were screened for sporulation defects. Unexpectedly, developmental mutants were obtained only when the protoplast fusion approach was used. Southern blot analysis of these mutants, and of randomly selected transformants obtained by electroporation, was consistent with the occurrence of single plasmid integration events in 33 and 65% of the cases, respectively. The argB marker was shown to be tightly linked to the mutant phenotype in only 62% of the mutants analyzed by sexual crosses. Partial DNA sequencing of a tagged gene, whose mutation delays asexual sporulation and results in a fluffy phenotype, showed no homology to previously reported sequences. Our results indicate that REMI can be used in A. nidulans to increase the transformation frequency and illustrate the advantages and potential problems when using REMI to tag genes of interest in this and other fungi. 相似文献

We report an unusual complication of intravenous infusion. A 4-week-old baby developed acute cardiopulmonary distress because of air embolism caused by improper preparation of peripheral intravenous set. The estimated amount of infused air was 12 ml (approximately 3.5 ml/kg). The infant recovered promptly after short supportive treatment. 相似文献

According to our common medical culture, some facts are simply unquestionable, for instance La?nnec invented the stethoscope. But was he the first one? On a recent trip to Egypt we visited the temple of Kom Ombo, built prior to the roman period and renowned as a medical care center. Today, the tourist is fascinated by the magnificent hieroglyphics on the well-preserved walls testifying to significant advances in various fields of medicine including ophthalmology and gynecology. We were particularly interested by the basreliefs presenting vivid drawings of some of the first medical instruments. We easily identified curettes, scissors, a balance, forceps for dental extraction, and a surgical saw, but were captivated by two other instruments. The first one looked a lot like what La?nnec invented around 1820. The second one was amazingly similar to the instrument we use everyday, with a distal opening and flexible tubes (woven papyrus?) leading to proximal ear pieces. Our Egyptian guide was formal: the stethoscope was invented in Egypt. The scientific impact of our observations leaves something to be desired, but did make us think about the huge gap between the advancement of medical knowledge in ancient Egypt and La?nnec's (re)-invention. Exposed to a similar gap in history, what would our documents stored on CD and video tapes have to say to future touring doctors? 相似文献

A unified gas-solid reaction model that considers multi gas-solid components is developed for reactions in porous pellets
with multiple reactants. The transient variables and properties of the reactants and transport parameters are continually
updated in the simulation. Temperature, pressure, solid conversions, and concentration profiles are well predicted. Structural
changes are also considered. Heat, mass, and reaction front tracking equations for all the components are solved simultaneously
through a combination of solution techniques. Illustrative validation results for the model are presented for hematite/nickel
oxide reduction at 608 K. The importance of bulk temperature and pressure on the overall and individual grain conversions
