Cloning and characterization of cDNA for human adenylate kinase 2A

Considerable genomic microdiversity has been reported previously among Helicobacter pylori isolates. We have constructed genome maps of four unrelated H. pylori strains (NCTC11637, NCTC11639, UA802 and UA861) using pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) with NotI and NruI, hybridization with extracted PFGE DNA fragments and probing with 17 gene probes. These strains of H. pylori were compared with a fifth unrelated H. pylori strain NCTC11638 mapped previously. Considerable diversity in gene arrangement was evident among the five H. pylori maps, and no consistent gene clustering was found. The association of only four genes, katA (catalase gene), vacA (vacuolating cytotoxin gene), hpaA (a putative adhesin gene), and pfr (bacterial ferritin gene) were generally conserved within approximately the same 25% of the genome; however, the order of these genes also varied. Our study demonstrates that macrodiversity, i.e. variability in gene order, in addition to microdiversity, is a characteristic of the H. pylori genome.     

The treatment of patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia using the selective alpha-blocker alfuzosin

40 patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) were treated with the alpha-blocker alfuzosin which was administered per os twice a day in a dose 5 mg. The treatment brought about a decrease of the mean symptom score from 19.6 to 12.2, of quality of life from 5.2 to 2.1, of residual urine from 152 to 82 ml. Mean and maximal urinary flow rates rose by 35 and 45%, respectively. The level of prostate-specific antigen over the treatment course did not change. The findings of the trial evidence for high efficacy of alfuzosin in the treatment of urination disorders in BPH patients.     

Lipid peroxidation in patients with ischemic heart disease, hyperlipidemia and/or hypertension while polyunsaturated omega-3 fatty acids of plant and animal origin were in their diet

Missing anterior teeth are being replaced by implant-supported restorations quite frequently in modern dentistry. Providing the patient with a temporary prosthesis prior to or following implant fixture placement must satisfy established esthetic and functional criteria. When orthodontic treatment is included as part of the overall treatment effort, additional considerations include the retention and stabilization of newly established tooth positions. This article describes the fabrication, use and advantages of a provisional anterior prosthesis that replaces missing teeth prior to or following implant placement.     

Direct anti-atherosclerosis-related effects of garlic

Leydig cell tumors are very rarely seen testicular tumors and can be difficult to distinguish from testicular tumors of the adrenogenital syndrome. Testicular tumors of the adrenogenital syndrome are confined to patients with congenital adrenal hyperplasia. The authors report a case of a patient with malignant Leydig cell tumor and a history of congenital adrenal hyperplasia (adrenogenital syndrome). To the authors' knowledge, this has not been reported previously.
