The rate of breakdown of food in mastication depends on the ratio of two mechanical properties of the food--the toughness and modulus of elasticity (Agrawal et al., 1997)--a result which can be predicted by an analysis of the energetics of fracture. The work input to produce food fragmentation is provided by the masticatory muscles, the activity levels of which depend on sensory feedback from the mouth. Here, we test the hypothesis that the activity of a representative of this musculature is modulated by the above combination of food properties. The surface electrical activity (EMG) of the anterior temporalis muscles of ten human subjects was recorded while subjects chewed standardized volumes of 15 food types. The integrated EMG in these muscles was highly significantly related to the square root of the ratio of the above two food properties. Significant correlations were found between this food property index and integrated EMG, both when data for all chews and all subjects were lumped together (r = -0.86; p < 0.0001) and when correlation coefficients between the index and EMG were plotted for each chew made by each subject. Except for two subjects in the first chew, these coefficients reached and maintained highly significant levels throughout the masticatory sequence. Thus, a clear relationship between the electrical activity of a jaw-closing muscle and the mechanical properties of food has been found for the first time.  相似文献

The role of nitric oxide (NO) in the cholinergic regulation of heart rate (HR) recovery from an aspect of simulated exercise was investigated in atria isolated from guinea pig to test the hypothesis that NO may be involved in the cholinergic antagonism of the positive chronotropic response to adrenergic stimulation. Inhibition of NO synthesis with NG-monomethyl-L-arginine (L-NMMA, 100 micro M) significantly slowed the time course of the reduction in HR without affecting the magnitude of the response elicited by bath-applied ACh (100 nM) or vagal nerve stimulation (2 Hz). The half-times (t1/2) of responses were 3.99 +/- 0.41 s in control vs. 7. 49 +/- 0.68 s in L-NMMA (P < 0.05). This was dependent on prior adrenergic stimulation (norepinephrine, 1 micro M). The effect of L-NMMA was reversed by L-arginine (1 mM; t1/2 4.62 +/- 0.39 s). The calcium-channel antagonist nifedipine (0.2 micro M) also slowed the kinetics of the reduction in HR caused by vagal nerve stimulation. However, the t1/2 for the reduction in HR with antagonists (2 mM Cs+ and 1 micro M ZD-7288) of the hyperpolarization-activated current were significantly faster compared with control. There was no additional effect of L-NMMA or L-NMMA+L-arginine on vagal stimulation in groups treated with nifedipine, Cs+, or ZD-7288. We conclude that NO contributes to the cholinergic antagonism of the positive cardiac chronotropic effects of adrenergic stimulation by accelerating the HR response to vagal stimulation. This may involve an interplay between two pacemaking currents (L-type calcium channel current and hyperpolarization-activated current). Whether NO modulates the vagal control of HR recovery from actual exercise remains to be determined.  相似文献

Brownian motion of the hairs (stereocilia) of amphibian hair cells has been shown in experiments to be in the range of some nm. Our models of the Brownian motion of coupled harmonic oscillators with mechanical properties of stereocilia lead to similar displacements. Computer simulation shows that stochastic fluctuations enhance the encoding of low level acoustic signals. Stochastic resonance lowers the detection threshold of auditory signals to amplitudes one order of magnitude lower than that of the Brownian motion.  相似文献

His117 of the D2 protein of photosystem II (PS II) is a conserved residue in the second transmembrane region of the protein and has been suggested to bind chlorophyll. Nine site-directed mutations were introduced at residue 117, using both photosystem I (PS I)-containing and PS I-less background strains of the cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803. Of these nine, four (H117C, H117M, H117N, and H117T) were photoautotrophic in the PS I-containing background. The other mutants (H117F, H117L, H117P, H117R, and H117Y) did not accumulate appreciable amounts of PS II in their thylakoids. The type of residues that can functionally replace His117 support the notion of His117 serving as a chlorophyll ligand. The properties of the H117N and H117T mutants were characterized in more detail. Whereas the properties of the H117N mutant were close to those of wild type, in the H117T mutant the 77-K fluorescence emission spectrum shows a much smaller amplitude at 695 nm than expected on the basis of the amount of PS II that is present. Moreover, in H117T, the amount of light needed to half-saturate O2-evolution rates was twofold higher than in the control strain, and the variable fluorescence yield was quenched. However, O2 evolution rates at saturating light intensity and electron-transport kinetics were normal in the mutant. Also, the radical accessory chlorophyll (Chlz+) formed by donation of an electron to the PS-II reaction center could be generated normally by illumination at low temperature in the H117T mutant. We conclude that the chlorophyll associated with residue 117 of the D2 protein is important for efficient excitation transfer between the proximal antenna and the PS II reaction center. A possible mechanism involving a chlorophyll cation to explain the quenching in the H117T mutant is discussed.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: The hemodynamic, respiratory, and metabolic responses to exercise were studied in IDDM patients and control subjects to detect diabetic cardiomyopathy. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Eight subjects aged 25-40 years with diabetes of at least 10 years' duration were compared with eight control subjects aged 21-46 years. All subjects underwent a progressive incremental bicycle exercise test with measurement of gas exchange, blood glucose, lactate, fat metabolite, and catecholamine levels and two steady-state exercise tests with measurement of cardiac output by a CO2 rebreathing method. A new first-pass radionuclide method was used to measure cardiac ejection fractions (EFs) at rest, peak exercise, and steady-state exercise. RESULTS: The peak achieved oxygen consumption was similar in the diabetic and control subjects (29.9 [25.1-34.6] and 31.4 [26.9-35.9] ml.min-1.kg-1, respectively; mean [95% CI]). There were no significant differences in heart rate, double product, ventilation, respiratory exchange ratio, or ventilatory equivalents for oxygen and CO2 during the incremental test. Glucose levels were higher in the diabetic subjects, but there were no significant differences in levels of lactate, catecholamines, free fatty acids, glycerol, or beta-hydroxybutyrate. Left ventricular EF fell from rest to peak exercise within the diabetic group (66.0% [59.6-72.4] at rest; 53.6% [45.6-61.6] at peak; P < 0.05) but this did not differ significantly from the control group (58.7% [52.3-65.1] at rest; 60.3% [48.9-71.7] at peak). Right ventricular EFs were similar in each group, and there was no reduction in peak filling rate to suggest diastolic dysfunction. The cardiac output responses to exercise were also similar in the two groups. CONCLUSIONS: There is no evidence of impairment of the exercise response in subjects with long-standing diabetes, and the apparent fall in left ventricular EF at peak exercise could be related to hemodynamic adaptation.  相似文献

The nonsedating antihistamines are frequently prescribed agents. Well-documented drug-drug interactions with two of these agents, terfenadine and astemizole, may result in serious adverse effects, including death, when they are prescribed along with macrolide antibiotics and/or the antifungal agents itraconazole or ketoconazole. Fexofenadine and loratadine appear to be the least likely nonsedating antihistamines to interact with other medications and to result in a life-threatening interaction. This article reviews the known drug-drug interactions involving nonsedating antihistamines and provides a basis from which the clinician can predict potential interactions.  相似文献

Chronic hematic cysts are rare conditions that usually present to the ophthalmic surgeons with displacement of the globe. There is usually no, or minimal, bone involvement. Two patients with unusual presentations of chronic orbital hematic cysts are reported. These cysts resulted in significant expansion and erosion of the bony orbits. The literature reports an optimum NaOH concentration for the alkaline cleaning of whey deposits or gels; at NaOH concentrations higher than this optimum, cleaning proceeds much more slowly. Although this phenomenon is of great importance in the cleaning of dairy equipment, no conclusive physical explanation has yet been presented. In this study, we present strong evidence that the dissolution rate is affected by the equilibrium-swelling ratio in β-lactoglobulin (βLg) gels. The swelling ratio is greatly reduced in the presence of salts due to the polyelectrolyte screening effect of the cations. This has been observed in free-swelling βLg gels using gravimetrical analysis and in the uniaxial swelling of WPC gel deposits using fluid dynamic gauging. At high dissolution pH (>13.3), the high Na+ concentration reduces swelling in spite of the high surface charge of the protein. It is proposed that the reduction of the free volume inside the gel impedes the transport of the protein aggregates out of the NaOH penetration zone. We have also observed that the final dissolution rate of gels pre-soaked in 1 M NaOH or NaCl is similar, despite the difference in pH, and much lower than for untreated gels: the high Na+ concentration in the soaked gels hinders swelling, inhibiting the disentanglement of the protein clusters regardless of the high pH.  相似文献

An integrated transceiver for broadband wireline networks is presented. The transceiver includes a receive data path, a transmit data path, and auxiliary functions including serial port interface, clock and reference generation blocks, and voltage regulator control circuitry. The receive data path provides constant input impedance and is composed of two variable gain amplifier (VGA) blocks, a tuned analog 4-pole filter, a 12-b analog-to-digital converter (ADC) sampling at 32 MHz, and a digital high-pass filter. Filter tuning using switched-capacitor arrays occurs in the background, with no effect on signal reception. The transmit data path contains digital interpolation filters and a 12-b digital-to-analog converter (DAC) sampling at 128 MHz. The chip was implemented in double-poly triple-metal 0.35-μm CMOS technology.
