Reconstructive and plastic microsurgery in the treatment of combat trauma to the extremities

In the department of microsurgery of A.A. Vishnevsky Central Hospital the transplantation and transposition of the at the gunshot injuries of the extremities have begun to execute since 1990. For this time 94 surgical interventions have been conducted at 88 wounded: 57 transplantations and 37 transpositions of the bloody tissues. The transplantation and transposition of the vascularized complexes of tissues with application of microsurgical technique is the effective method of the treatment of the wounded in the extremities. In the conditions of the local armed conflicts it is necessary to provide deployment of the department of microsurgery at stages of the specialized medical care.     

Experimental intravitreal gentamicin

Rabbits received intravitreal injections of gentamicin and indirect ophthalmoscopy, electroretinography, and histopathology determined relative toxicity. An intravitreal dose of 0.1 to 0.2 mg of commercially available gentamicin was well tolerated in the rabbit eye. A dosage of 0.4 mg or higher consistently produced significant ocular toxicity as evidenced by extinction of the electroretinogram, gross fundus changes, and histopathologic alterations.

The paper presents the results of treating patients with chronic nonspecific diseases of the lung by the use of extracorporeal ultraviolet autoblood irradiation (EUVABI). The marked clinical effect recorded after an EUVABI course coincided with the normalization of an erythrocytic membrane morphoform, which suggests that the severity of allergic and inflammatory reactions was liquidated and blood viscosity was improved. EUVABI led to positive changes in the pattern of morphotypes in the crystallogram of plasma, except the patients who showed no clinical effect, which indicates that plasma crystallography can be used as a diagnostic test in predicting the results of EUVABI application.     

Kinetic analysis of papaya proteinase omega

Papaya proteinase omega (pp omega) has been purified from dried latex both by immunoaffinity and traditional methods. Kinetic analysis revealed that (1), the pp omega-catalysed hydrolysis of N-benzoyl-L-arginine p-nitroanilide (BApNA) has a lower specificity (kcat/Km) than the same reaction catalysed by papain; (2), the pp omega-catalysed hydrolysis of a tripeptide substrate having phenylalanine at the second position (S2-site) showed a more similar specificity to that catalysed by papain; (3), the significant difference between the two enzymes is that steady state kinetics with both L-BApNA and a tripeptide enables the identification in pp omega of other ionizations affecting binding. The active sites of papain and pp omega can therefore be distinguished by pH-dependence of kcat/Km.     

An investigation of the interactions of the allosteric modifiers of pyruvate kinase with the enzyme from Carcinus maenas hepatopancreas

Appropriate low dosages of vincristine stimulate megakaryocytopoiesis and produce thrombocytosis. In this study of the thrombocytotic action of vincristine, administration of a single dose of 0.1 mg/kg to rats produced an increase in megakaryocyte concentration, diameter and 24 h [3H]thymidine labelling index. Transfusion of one body equivalent of platelets from normal donors prevented stimulation of megakaryocytopoiesis by vincristine whereas platelets from vincristine-treated donors did not. These results suggest that vincristine stimulates megakaryocytopoiesis by altering the functional role of circulating platelets in the regulation of thrombopoiesis.
