Diagnosis of hyperventilation for elimination of false-positive results of physical exercise test

The study was conducted in 55 patients with cardiac pains. Electrocardiography was used successively prior to, during and following physical exercises, followed by Seldinger selective coronary angiography, and electrocardiography prior to, during and following hyperventilation tests. In 2 of 55 patients the result of the exercise test was interpreted as false-positive, since the coronary angiography demonstrated intact vessels, and during hyperventilation ECG recorded a decreased ST segment. To avoid false-positive results in patients with suspected angina pectoris the physical exercises tests can be considered positive only in cases in which hyperventilation caused no ECG changes typical for angina pectoris.     

Synchronous amplification of subpicosecond pulses

In high-gain dye amplifiers, the effective storage time of the gain medium is only a few hundred picoseconds. Therefore, efficient amplification of ultrashort pulses places a stringent requirement on the synchronization between the pump pulse and the pulse to be amplified. We present a technique of short pulse generation using a dye laser synchronously pumped by a frequency-doubled CW mode locked Nd:YAG laser. Pulses as short as 70 fs are produced. The short optical pulses are subsequently amplified with two different synchronous amplification schemes using 100 ps pulses to establish the gain in the dye amplifier stages. Subpicosecond pulses with energies from a few hundred nanojoules at 500 Hz to a few hundred microjoules at 7 Hz can be obtained.     

Early diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis

On the basis of own observations of courses the author adopts a definite attitude to the early symptomatology of the rheumatoid arthritis. During the first weeks of the rheumatoid arthritis the following symptoms are found: articular syndromes, more frequently in form of obstinate polyarthralgias, mono-oligoarthritis, accompanied by morning rigidity and accelerated BSR as well as impairment of the general condition. In the majority of the patients only the tentative diagnosis rheumatoid arthritis may be made. After a one to three months' course of the disease the diagnosis becomes more probable. It is above all based on constancy and symmetry, characteristic localisation of the articular process, morning rigidity, radiologically paraarticular loosening of the structure and morphological symptoms of an acute and subacute synovialitis. 6 to 12 months after the beginning of the disease a clinical picture forms which allows to make the diagnosis of a certain or classical rheumatoid arthritis in accordance with the criteria of the ARA. The occurrence of a high activity of multiple affection of the joints (permanent symmetrical polyarthritis including the small joints of the hands and feet), distinctive morning rigidity, high fever and much accelerated BSR, beginning with the first weeks of the disease, speaks for the possibility of the development of an arthrovisceral form of the course of rheumatoid arthritis.     

Effect of hypoxemia on the erythropoietic activity of organs during perfusion

Hypoxemia (45-minute) influence in vivo on erythropoietic activity of the kidney, liver, spleen, and sternum was studied by normoxemic perfusion of the isolated organs. The erythropoietic activity proved to increase after 6-hour perfusion of the liver; this confirmed the participation of this organ in the extrarenal secretion of the erythropoietic factor.     

The regulatory mechanisms of the blood respiratory function in iron-deficiency anemias

Experience of vascular thrombosis prophylaxis and treatment after reconstructive operation conduction on abdominal aorta and peripheral arteries in 244 patients, including 112 of them immediately after the operation, 32-up to one year time, 100-in long-term follow-up period was summarized. Main aetiological cause for thrombosis occurrence immediately after the operation were technical and tactical failures committed during its conduction, in the early postoperative period-the neointima hyperplasia in the anastomosis area, in late terms-the blood outflow disorder from the reconstructed segment due to the atherosclerosis progression. Original methods of reoperation conduction for the transplant thrombosis and the outflow arteries reconstruction were proposed. Mortality lowering from 8.8 to 5.3% and the extremity revascularization occurrence, in 75% of patients immediately after the operation and in 84%-in long-term period was promoted owing to tactics of postoperative thrombosis treatment elaborated.     

Evidence of anomalous thermal expansion of water in cement paste

A comparative study of permeability measurement by thermopermeametry (TPA) and beam bending was performed on cement paste. To bring the two measurements into agreement, it is necessary to recognize that the pore solution has a thermal expansion coefficient about one and a half times that of bulk liquid and to account for viscoelastic stress relaxation during TPA experiments. The anomalous thermal expansion is not accounted for by the presence of ions in the cement paste pore solution.     

Technical note on cold weather installation of HDPE

In order to successfully seam HDPE flexible membrane liners (FMLs) in cold weather (less than 4·5°C (40°F), FML temperature may not be the most important factor. Secondary cold weather effects such as frozen subgrade, bridging, snow and ice removal, and worker discomfort pose a much more significant risk to the integrity of the liner installation.
