Evaluation of intermodel agreement using ISO 13655 M0, M1, and M2 measurement modes in commercial spectrophotometers

Spectrophotometers are routinely used for color measurement and color management in many commercial printing and proofing workflows. In the case of media containing optical brightening agents, ultraviolet (UV)‐induced fluorescence has led to poor levels of agreement between models from different manufacturers, and different models from the same manufacturer. A relevant standard, ISO 13655, has been revised and now clearly defines measurement modes and conditions for the UV component in spectrophotometers. ISO 13655:2009—Graphic Technology—Spectral Measurement and Colorimetric Computation for Graphic Arts Images now defines four measurement modes: M0, M1, M2, and M3. The intermodel difference between 10 commercially available spectrophotometers is evaluated for different substrate types in measurement modes (M0, M1, and M2) as allowed by each instrument. In particular, the authors compare devices using M0 legacy mode versus newer instruments that are compliant with the new M1 and M2 (UV‐included and UV‐excluded) measurement modes. A finding with significant practical applications is that there is greatly improved intermodel agreement between the new generation of ISO 13655‐compliant instruments in M1 (D50) mode when compared with the previous generation of hand‐held spectrophotometers. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Synthesis and Characterization of 5-Coordinate Tungsten Hydride Anions: [(tBu3SiNH)(tBu3SiN=)2HWR]M

Treatment of (^tBu₃SiNH)(^tBu₃SiN=)₂WH ( 1 -H) with small alkyl anions (RM) afforded tungsten alkyl hydride anions [(^tBu₃SiNH)(^tBu₃SiN=)₂HWR)]M ( 3 -(R)M: R=CH₃, M=Li; R=ⁿBu, M=Li; R=^neoPe, M=Li; R=CH₂Ph (Bn), M=K (two isomers); R=CCH, M=Na; R=CH=CH₂ (Vy), M=Li). The saturated alkyl anions 3 -(R)M ( 3 -(R)M: R=CH₃, M=Li; R=ⁿBu, M=Li; R=^neoPe, M=Li; R=CH₂Ph (Bn), M=K) degraded via apparent 1,2-RH-elimination to produce the known [(^tBu₃SiN=)₃WH]M ( 2 -HM), but the acetylide ( 3 -(C₂H)Na) and vinyl ( 3 -(Vy)Li) anions converted to their hydrogenated isomers, [(^tBu₃SiN=)₃WVy]Na ( 2 -VyNa) and [(^tBu₃SiN=)₃WEt]Li ( 2 -EtLi), respectively. The structure of 3 -(ⁿBu)Li is reported, and a discussion of tungsten-hydride coupling constants in ^tBu₃SiX-ligated (X=O, NH, N) systems is given.     

Microwave-specific heating of crystalline species in nuclear waste glass

The microwave heating of a crystal-free and a partially trevorite-crystallized nuclear waste glass simulant was evaluated. Our results show that a 500-mg monolith of partially crystallized waste glass can be heated from room temperature to above 1600°C within 2 minutes using a single-mode, highly focused, 2.45-GHz microwave, operating at 300 W. Using X-ray diffraction measurements, we show that trevorite is no longer detectable after irradiation and thermal quenching. When a crystal-free analog of the same waste glass simulant composition was exposed to the same microwave radiation, it could not be heated above 450°C regardless of the heating time. The reduction in crystalline content achieved by selectively heating spinels in the presence of glass suggests that microwave-specific heating should be further explored as a technique for remediating crystal accumulation in a glass melt.     

Properties of molecular composite film of poly(4,4'-diamino-2'-carbamoylbenzanilide terephthalamide)(p-PDCBTA) and poly(4,4'-diamino-2'-chlorobenzanilide terephthalamide) (P-LCI)

Summary A new thermally stable, high strength and high modulus aromatic polyamide film was obtained via the formation of the molecular composite of p-PDCBTA and P-LCl. The two polymers exhibited good miscibility identified with the measurement of dynamic mechanical property and FTIR spectra. By the combination of drawing by 40% and subsequent heat treatment, the tensile property of the composite film could be achieved to the strength of 450 MPa and the modulus of 24 GPa, which were sustainable upto 400 °C. On particle path generation based on quadrilinear interpolation andBernstein-Bezier polynomials

Particle path computation in unsteady 3D vector fields given in discrete, structured form (i.e., as a hexahedral curvilinear grid) requires the local approximation of the vector field and the path. Quadrilinear interpolation and Bernstein-Bezier polynomials are used for the local vector field and path approximation. The next point in a sequence of points on a particle path is computed using this local approximation. Bernstein-Bezier polynomials are primarily used in geometric modeling, and their properties allow direct computation of points on a particle path     

The prevalence, structure and clinical problems of multiple sclerosis in the Transcarpathian area based on epidemiological study data

As many as 230 patients with disseminated sclerosis were examined in the Transcarpathian region. Sick male- and female populations were found out to be almost similar. There were more sick persons in the medium-range areas of the Carpathian Mountains, with a mean age being 35 +/- 5 years. It has been established that intake of spirulina makes for lengthening of remission in those patients with disseminated sclerosis.

Numerous data strongly suggest the involvement of cytokines and the matrix metalloproteinase collagenase (MMP-1) in the pathogenesis of periodontitis. Recently, we have demonstrated that, upon culturing under the influence of IL-1 alpha + EGF, a large amount of inactive procollagenase (MMP-1) is stored in the extracellular matrix of periosteal tissue. We now show that this endogenous reservoir of proenzyme can be operative after activation with plasmin and is able to induce a rapid and almost complete breakdown of the collagenous extracellular matrix. The level of collagen degradation following activation showed a strong correlation with the amount of proenzyme that was incorporated in the tissue. The highest level of degradation (70% of the total amount of collagenous proteins) was found with the IL-1 alpha + EGF-treated explants, followed by those treated with IL-1 alpha alone (35%). Explants cultured with EGF or in the absence of cytokines, containing only small amounts of procollagenase, showed little collagen breakdown following plasmin activation (7%). Inhibition of metalloproteinases by EDTA, or blockage of plasmin by PMSF, prevented the degradation in all explants irrespective of the amount of proenzyme present in the tissue. Our findings demonstrate that endogenous proenzyme stored in a native connective tissue matrix can be activated at a later time interval which results in a massive breakdown of the tissue. This study shows a possible pathway of collagenase-induced breakdown without recent de novo synthesis of the enzyme. Such a sequence may be operative in chronic inflammatory diseases, such as periodontitis, where production of procollagenase under the influence of cytokines spans a longer time period, whereas breakdown is often characterized by a cyclic behaviour.
