The administration of peflocine (pefloxacin) in the treatment and prevention of surgical infections

The results of treatment of 23 patients with pefloxacin, administered because of the infectional complications in surgery development (1 group), and of 11 patients --for the infection development prophylaxis (2 group) were discussed. In the first group the recovery was noted in 83.3%, and significant improvement of condition--in 16.7% of patients. In the second group the infectional complications in postoperative period were absent.     

Study of pathogenetic mechanisms of intoxication in patients with anaerobic non-clostridial infection

Pyoinflammatory diseases continue to be one of the most topical problem of modern medicine. Anaerobic non-clostridial infection is essential in the etiological pattern of pyoinflammatory diseases. Its specific feature is early developed severe intoxication. The authors have developed laboratory criteria for evaluating the degree of intoxication in patients with anaerobic non-clostridial infection, which are based on chromatographic determination of the concentrations of specific metabolic products, such as volatile fatty acids and toxic metabolites of the phenol group, in the patients' peripheral blood, which allows the detected disorders to be promptly corrected. The metabolic products of non spore-forming anaerobes, such as volatile fatty acids, are important pathogenetic factors since they inhibit the dynamic activity of platelets and the phagocytic activity of leukocytes in blood.     

Stabilization of omega-3-polyunsaturated acids in fat from Mallotus villosus (Osmeridae) by the nontoxic, sulfur-containing antioxidant CO-3

The stabilizing effect of the newly produced sulfur-containing antioxidant SO-3 on the fatty acid composition of fat obtained from Mallotus villosus was studied at various temperatures. In the absence of the antioxidant, omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids were found in the fish fat during 1 month at -18 degrees storage, although the content of these fatty acids was decreased 2-fold in this case. After addition of the SO-3 stabilizer to the fish fat at final concentration 0.2%, content of the omega-3 fatty acids was unaltered within 1 month at - 18 degrees, 10 degrees and was half decreased only at room temperature. Thus, nontoxic antioxidant SO-3 may be used to preserve preparations containing omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids.     

Cytogenetic characteristics of the leukemia L1210 strain in the development of drug resistance

The dose and schedule dependent resistance occurred at the 17th (L1210/D1) and 27th (L1210/D2) generations during leukemia L1210 transplantation by the cells treated with suboptimal diazane doses. With growth of the resistance to diazane the selection of modal cell class with 39 chromosomes took place while in the parent leukemia line the modal cell class consists of the cells with 40 chromosomes. No reliable differences were observed in G-banded karyotypes between the resistant subline L1210/D1 and the parent line L1210. When the resistant sublines were transplanted without supporting the diazane doses no restoration of the leukemic cells sensitivity to the drug was observed (the time of observation for L1210/D1 was 92 transplantation generations and for L1210/D2-48 generations). The changed number chromosome characteristics remained the same in this case.     

Drying the monolithic lining of 300-ton steelcasting ladles

Conclusions The optimal drying temperature for the monolithic silica lining of 300-ton steelcasting ladles is 500°C for a drying time of 18 h, provided the ladle casing contains an adequate number of ventilation holes.Translated from Ogneupory, No. 3, pp. 31–34, March, 1977.
