A delayed reward strategy for large-scale motivation of safety belt use: A test of long-term impact

An incentive program applicable for communitywide motivation of safety belt use was implemented at a large industrial complex. After four weeks of daily baseline observation of drivers' shoulder belt usage at two entrance/exit gates during employees' afternoon departure, an incentive intervention was implemented at only Gate 1, where it was impossible to stop vehicles and immediately reward safety belt wearing. Instead, the employees were informed via signs, posters, and newspaper articles that a winning license plate number would be randomly selected each day from among those vehicles exiting Gate 1 whose drivers were wearing shoulder belts. Winners were offered the choice of two university basketball tickets or meals for two at a local restaurant. Shoulder belt observations continued daily at both gates throughout the three-week incentive intervention, and for three long-term follow-up phases over the subsequent eleven months. The incentive intervention influenced substantial increases in shoulder belt use (from a mean percentage of 6.3% belt usage during baseline to 23.1% during the incentive period); and affected some long-term impact (i.e. mean USE = 16.3% after one month, 15.8% after three months, and 11.0% after ten months).     

Rehabilitation of patients who have suffered a stroke with an aphasic syndrome

A total of 70 patients with aphasic syndromes following a cerebral stroke were treated in a neurological department, a polyclinic and at home. The main diseases which led to the brain stroke were hypertensive disease and general atherosclerosis. The aphasic disturbances were due to hemorrhagic strokes in 19 patients and ischemic-in 51 patients. Training of speech rehabilitation began from the end of the first and the beginning of the second week after the stroke. The inclusion of logopedic lessons into the general complex of restorative therapy, a continuity in conditions of a hospital and a polyclinic, a possibility of a dynamical observation of the patients, dispensarization-all these measures according to the authors' opinion are important and necessary for rehabilitation of the patients who had strokes with the aphasic syndrome.     

Involvement in role-playing simulations: A demonstration with studies on obedience.

A role-playing simulation of S. Milgram's (1963, 1965, 1972, 1974) studies on obedience was designed to determine the success of role playing as an alternative method to deception. 91 paid male Ss aged 20–60 yrs simulated 3 conditions of Milgram's studies. Experimental sessions were videotaped and rated for involvement in the role-playing situation. It was hypothesized that only for Ss most involved in the role playing and who successfully suspended the "as if" nature of the experiment would the relationships between conditions found by Milgram be upheld, such that there would be a drop in obedience in the experimenter-absent condition as compared to the baseline and victim's-limited-contract conditions. As predicted, only in the experimenter-absent condition was the regression of involvement on obedience significant, with obedience decreasing as involvement increased. The success of role playing in replicating both the outcome of the obedience studies and S's experience of the situation (process) is discussed. Some of the ethical advantages of role playing are reexamined in light of the realistic and stressful emotional responses exhibited.
