Stress urinary incontinence is a highly prevalent disorder resulting from weak urethral closure mechanisms. Endoscopic injection of a urethral bulking agent (UBA) under the urethral mucosa increases coaptation, which improves continence. Collagen is an efficient agent, although its effects are limited in time. Other materials still suffer either from a short-lasting effect or migration in distant organs. We evaluated here novel UBAs using an ex vivo model, with respect to criteria of ease of injection, ability to form a high and stable tissue bulking, implant elasticity and tissue reaction. One approach involves solutions of polymers in water-miscible organic solvents that precipitates in situ. In this manner, high and stable bulks were routinely obtained using various commercial polymers. Selected solvents reduced the tissue reaction to the implant. Microsphere suspensions in hydrogels also proved to be efficient UBA, although less stable bulks were obtained. Thermosetting chitosan hydrogels showed promising results with respect to bulk stability and isoelasticity with surrounding tissues. Different strategies have thus been compared and optimised ex vivo. Further experiments are required to compare the ability of these materials to induce a sustained in vivo bulking effect. 相似文献

Grafted polymer substrates bearing diglycol amic acid (DA) ligands for Eu and Sm adsorption were prepared using a two-step post-grafting modification of polyethylene/polypropylene-g-poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (PE/PP-g-PGMA) that was synthesized through reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT)-mediated γ-radiation induced graft polymerization in emulsion phase. The PE/PP-g-PGMA prepared with RAFT mediation exhibited better reactivity towards amination reaction at 40 °C than the graft copolymers prepared without RAFT mediation, with the epoxide to amino group conversion of the former exceeding the latter by as much as 20%. The DA ligands were incorporated to the aminated graft copolymer by subsequent reaction with diglycolic anhydride to yield the DA-modified PE/PP-g-PGMA adsorbent. The effects of pH and competing ions on the uptake of Eu and Sm have been investigated. The DA-modified PE/PP-g-PGMA prepared with RAFT mediation showed higher Eu and Sm adsorption percentage than the DA adsorbent that was synthesized without RAFT mediation. The DA-modified PE/PP-g-PGMA exhibited higher affinity for Eu over Cu and Fe in acidic solutions. 相似文献

Criminologists have extensively researched the problems generated by licensed establishments. Violent offending and disorderly behavior resulting from pubs, taverns, dance clubs and bars are of particular interest to this field of study. The relative density of these liquor establishments has been found to be associated with the level of violence and disorder in surrounding areas. A complex systems approach can be used to further understand the dynamic interplay between licensed establishments, violent offending and disorder, and urban planning decisions. The model presented here utilizes cellular automata as the mathematical framework to view the varying impact of liquor licensing density on crime. This study uses a sample of liquor establishments and crime data from the City of Vancouver in British Columbia. The cellular automata model incorporates transition rules which govern the change of city blocks from low-risk blocks to high-risk blocks. The results represented by a 50 × 50 cellular grid show that high-risk blocks multiply when liquor licenses are grouped. Two scenarios are presented to contrast the impact of grouping high-risk blocks which contain more liquor establishments and dispersing such blocks. A third scenario demonstrates how increasing the positive influence in a grouped scenario stops high-risk blocks from taking over the entire grid. Future iterations of this model will incorporate census data, public transportation data, land use data and entertainment districts from other cities to further analyze the effect of licensed establishments on the distribution of crime. 相似文献

Various doses of GABA from 0.25 to 5 mumol injected into the third ventricle decrease serum TSH rapidly. The same effect was observed with GABOB (10 mumol), the hydroxylated form of GABA. The inhibitory effect of both of these drugs was prevented by picrotoxin injection (1 microgram). Peripheral injection of GABAergic drugs such as GABOB or AOAA also decreased serum TSH. In vitro, the addition of GABA (from 6.7 . 10(-6) to 6.7 . 10(-4) M) to the incubation medium of hemi-anterior pituitary did not modify the liberation of TSH. To test the physiological role of GABA in the regulation of thyrotropin function the circadian TSH rhythm was used as a model. Both GABAergic inhibitors, picrotoxin (10 microgram/kg b.w.) as well as semicarbazide (150 mg/kg b.w.), induced an increase of the low basal nocturnal level of TSH (centered on the 02.00 h time point) without altering the diurnal peak of TSH. We conclude that GABA has an inhibitory effect on central thyrotropin control via an inhibition of TRH release from the hypothalamus and might be, at least partly, responsible for the low nocturnal levels of serum TSH observed during the circadian physiological rhythm. 相似文献

Application of neuroscience methods to analyze and understand human behavior related to markets and marketing exchange has recently gained research attention. The basic aim is to guide design and presentation of products to optimize them to be as compatible as possible with consumer preferences. This paper investigates physiological decision processes while participants undertook a choice task designed to elicit preferences for a product. The task required participants to choose their preferred crackers described by shape (square, triangle, round), flavor (wheat, dark rye, plain) and topping (salt, poppy, no topping). The two main research objectives were (1) to observe and evaluate the cortical activity of the different brain regions and the interdependencies among the Electroencephalogram (EEG) signals from these regions; and (2) unlike most research in this area that has focused mainly on liking/disliking certain products, we provide a way to quantify the importance of different cracker features that contribute to the product design based on mutual information. We used the commercial Emotiv EPOC wireless EEG headset with 14 channels to collect EEG signals from participants. We also used a Tobii-Studio eye tracker system to relate the EEG data to the specific choice options (crackers). Subjects were shown 57 choice sets; each choice set described three choice options (crackers). The patterns of cortical activity were obtained in the five principal frequency bands, Delta (0–4 Hz), Theta (3–7 Hz), Alpha (8–12 Hz), Beta (13–30 Hz), and Gamma (30–40 Hz). There was a clear phase synchronization between the left and right frontal and occipital regions indicating interhemispheric communications during the chosen task for the 18 participants. Results also indicated that there was a clear and significant change (p < 0.01) in the EEG power spectral activities taking a place mainly in the frontal (delta, alpha and beta across F3, F4, FC5 and FC6), temporal (alpha, beta, gamma across T7), and occipital (theta, alpha, and beta across O1) regions when participants indicated their preferences for their preferred crackers. Additionally, our mutual information analysis indicated that the various cracker flavors and toppings of the crackers were more important factors affecting the buying decision than the shapes of the crackers. 相似文献

Modern graphics cards, commonly used in desktop computers, have evolved beyond a simple interface between processor and display to incorporate sophisticated calculation engines that can be applied to general purpose computing. The Monte Carlo algorithm for modelling photon transport in turbid media has been implemented on an NVIDIA® 8800gt graphics card using the CUDA toolkit. The Monte Carlo method relies on following the trajectory of millions of photons through the sample, often taking hours or days to complete. The graphics-processor implementation, processing roughly 110 million scattering events per second, was found to run more than 70 times faster than a similar, single-threaded implementation on a 2.67 GHz desktop computer.

However, accurate results require tracing the path of many photons within the media. The independence of photons naturally lends the Monte Carlo technique to implementation on parallel architectures. Generally, parallel computing can be expensive, but recent advances in consumer grade graphics cards have opened the possibility of high-performance desktop parallel-computing.Solution method: In this pair of programmes we have implemented the Monte Carlo algorithm described by Prahl et al.
