Childhood cancer and parental use of tobacco: deaths from 1971 to 1976

Parental smoking data have been reabstracted from the interview records of the Oxford Survey of Childhood Cancers (deaths from 1971 to 1976). Reported smoking habits for the parents of 2587 children who died with cancer were compared with similar information for the parents of 2587 healthy controls (matched pairs analysis). Maternal daily consumption of cigarettes and paternal use of pipes or cigars were unimportant, but there was a statistically significant positive trend between paternal daily consumption of cigarettes and the risk of childhood cancer (P < 0.001). This association could not be explained by maternal smoking, social class, parental ages at the birth of the survey child, sibship position or obstetric radiography. Relations between maternal consumption of cigarettes and birth weights suggested that (maternal) smoking data were equally reliable for case and control subjects. About 14% of all childhood cancers in this series could be attributable to paternal smoking. These data were combined with smoking data from two previously published reports from the Oxford Survey (deaths from 1953 to 1955, deaths from 1977 to 1981) to obtain further information on risks for different types of cancer and different ages at onset of disease. Paternal cigarette smoking emerged as a potential risk factor both for the generality of childhood cancer and for all ages at onset.

Collapse behavior evaluation of hybrid thin-walled member by stacking condition

For the crash safety aspect, the energy absorbing members should absorb collision energy sufficiently but for the environmentally-friendly aspect, the vehicle structure must be light weight in order to improve the fuel efficiency and reduce the tail gas emission. Therefore, the light weight of vehicle must be achieved in a securing safety status of crash. An aluminum or carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRP) is representative one of the light-weight materials. Based on the respective collapse behavior of aluminum and CFRP member, the collapse behavior of hybrid thin-walled member was evaluated. The hybrid members were manufactured by wrapping CFRP prepreg sheets outside the aluminum hollow members in the autoclave. Because the CFRP is an anisotropic material whose mechanical properties, such as strength and elasticity, change with its stacking condition, the effects of the stacking condition on the collapse behavior evaluation of the hybrid thin-walled member were tested. The collapse mode and energy absorption capability of the hybrid thin-walled member were analyzed with the change of the fiber orientation angle and interface number.     

Adaptive characterization of recrystallization kinetics in IF steel by electron backscatter diffraction

In this study, a rigorous methodology for quantifying recrystallization kinetics by electron backscatter diffraction is proposed in order to reduce errors associated with the operator's skill. An adaptive criterion to determine adjustable grain orientation spread depending on the recrystallization stage is proposed to better identify the recrystallized grains in the partially recrystallized microstructure. The proposed method was applied in characterizing the microstructure evolution during annealing of interstitial‐free steel cold rolled to low and high true strain levels of 0.7 and 1.6, respectively. The recrystallization kinetics determined by the proposed method was found to be consistent with the standard method of Vickers microhardness. The application of the proposed method to the overall recrystallization stages showed that it can be used for the rigorous characterization of progressive microstructure evolution, especially for the severely deformed material.     

Measurement of integrated sensory-motor function following brain damage by a computerized preview tracking task

A preview tracking task has been developed which has particular application to neurological assessment and rehabilitation. Generated and monitored by a graphic display computer, it permits accurate global quantification of the upper-limb sensory-motor system. The incorporation of 'preview' into the tracking task is considered to significantly increase its effectiveness and relevance in relation to normal daily activities. Applied to three groups of normal subjects, several features of normal psychomotor performance and learning were identified or verified: hand dominance is not significant in overall arm control; learning does not completely plateau; increase in age (15-59 years) results in only a minor overall decrement in performance; an initial wide performance distribution decreases dramatically in subsequent sessions. Applied to brain-damaged patients, particularly head injury or stroke, the preview tracking task allows assessment at regular intervals enabling sensory-motor recovery curves to be generated. The potential of this technique, to help determine the efficacy of therapeutic procedures on the recovery process, is illustrated with the presentation of results from three brain-damaged patients demonstrating zero, significant and disjointed recovery of sensory-motor function. The usefulness of the preview tracking task can be expanded by combination with a less frequently applied but more component specific neurological assessment battery.     

Endoplasmic reticulum Ca(2+)-ATPase in microsomal vesicles isolated from bovine retinae

Active Ca2+ transport was measured in microsomal vesicles prepared from bovine retinae and was compared with that in disk membranes of the photoreceptor cells of the same retina. The 45Ca uptake was dependent on the presence of Mg(2+)-ATP and was inhibited by vanadate or when GTP substituted for ATP. The dependence of calcium uptake on the external free Ca2+ concentration gave a KM = 13 microM or a KM = 0.1 microM for disks and microsomal vesicles, respectively. A phosphorylated intermediate (E-P) of Ca(2+)-ATPase of about 100 kDa was isolated in microsomal vesicles. The E-P formation was strongly inhibited by thapsigargin and partially by 2,5-di-(-butyl)benzohydroquinone. Digestion of disks or microsomes with calpain had no effect on the phosphorylated intermediate, while digestion with trypsin produced two fragments of approximately 55 kDa and 35 kDa. These results suggest that bovine retinal microsomes contain a calcium pump belonging to the SERCA family.     

Some pharmacokinetic parameters of doxycycline in east African goats after intramuscular administration of a long-acting formulation

A compartmental and non-compartmental study was carried out on five adult goats following intramuscular administration of doxycycline at 20 mg/kg bodyweight. The concentration of the drug in serum was determined by a microbiological assay employing Bacillus cereus var mycoides (ATCC 11778) as the test organism. The mean serum concentration (Cmax) and the time of maximum concentration (Tmax) were 1.87 micrograms/ml and 0.85 h, respectively. Using compartmental analysis, the plasma concentration-time curve of doxycycline best fitted a three-compartment open model with first-order absorption. A three-phase disposition of doxycycline was found, the terminal elimination half-life being approximately 40 h. The statistical moment theory was mainly used for non-compartmental analysis. The value obtained for the mean residence time (MRT) was 16.4 h. The mean values for the volume of distribution at steady state (Vdss), determined by compartmental and non-compartmental analyses, were 8.73 and 13.19 L/kg, respectively. There were no statistically significant differences when the major pharmacokinetic parameters were compared. It was concluded that the pharmacokinetic behaviour of doxycycline in goats after intramuscular administration is characterized by a three-compartment model with a slow terminal elimination phase. Based on current knowledge, this could be due to enterohepatic recycling and/or flip-flop kinetics. The study indicated that a single intramuscular administration of 20 mg/kg of doxycycline may only provide therapeutic concentrations for up to 24 h owing to slow absorption at the injection site.     

Analysis of linkage between beta-lactoglobulin and J blood group system loci in cattle

Linkage between loci controlling variants of beta-lactoglobulin and blood groups of the J system in cattle was studied by means of stochastic genetic methods reported earlier. The studies were conducted on a herd of Black Pied cattle improved with Holstein sires; population genetic data were analyzed. A plot for lod score was constructed, and point (r - 0.28) and interval estimations of the coefficient of recombination were obtained. The results are in good agreement with earlier reported data on other subjects.
