A large tumor of the right atrium was found to be only the precimal end of a bland thrombus of the inferior vena cava. Of special interest were certain echocardiographic findings, including persistent delay in closure of the tricuspid valve after successful removal of the thrombus.  相似文献

The thermal stability of strained Si/Si1−xGex/Si structures grown by molecular beam epitaxy was investigated by resistive heating and in situ Rutherford backscattering spectrometry. Ge profiles obtained from a 50 nm Si1−xGex layer on a Si(100) substrate capped with 50 nm Si were evaluated for different Ge concentrations after sequential heating periods at a particular temperature between 850 and 1010° C. The diffusion coefficients, calculated from the increase in signal in the tail of the Ge profile, proved to be comparable to the value for Ge in bulk Si. A more pronounced decrease of the signal at the center of the Ge profile indicated a faster diffusion within the SiGe layer which was confirmed by analysis of the FWHM of the Ge profile. Ion channeling measurements were used to characterize tetragonal strain in the buried SiGe layers. Angular scans through the 111 direction were interpreted with Monte Carlo channeling calculations and used to study strain relaxation in dislocation-free and partially relaxed layers.  相似文献

We present a generalized reverse correlation technique that can be used to estimate the spatio-temporal receptive fields (STRFs) of sensory neurons from their responses to arbitrary stimuli such as auditory vocalizations or natural visual scenes. The general solution for STRF estimation requires normalization of the stimulus-response cross-correlation by the stimulus autocorrelation matrix. When the second-order stimulus statistics are stationary, normalization involves only the diagonal elements of the Fourier-transformed auto-correlation matrix (the power spectrum). In the non-stationary case normalization requires the entire auto-correlation matrix. We present modelling studies that demonstrate the feasibility and accuracy of this method as well as neurophysiological data comparing STRFs estimated using natural versus synthetic stimulus ensembles. For both auditory and visual neurons, STRFs obtained with these different stimuli are similar, but exhibit systematic differences that may be functionally significant. This method should be useful for determining what aspects of natural signals are represented by sensory neurons and may reveal novel response properties of these neurons.  相似文献

Kainic acid (KA)-induced status epilepticus (SE) in adult rats results in extensive neuronal damage throughout the limbic system and the loss of selectively vulnerable neuronal populations, particularly CA3 neurons. We investigated the effects of a short episode of seizure activity on neuronal death elicited by a subsequent prolonged SE episode. A short episode of seizure activity was produced by sub-cutaneous (s.c.) injection of KA followed after 1 h by pentobarbital administration. Twenty-four hours later, KA was administered again, and animals were sacrificed 3 days later. Neuronal damage was estimated by visual analysis of neuronal density. Our results show that a short episode of seizure activity did not produce neuronal damage but almost completely protected vulnerable neurons from KA-induced neuronal damage. These results extend to epileptic tolerance the notion of tolerance previously described in the case of ischemia.  相似文献

The distribution of the enzymes NADPH diaphorase and nitric oxide synthase in the ventromedial nucleus of the hypothalamus of cycling and ovariectomized/estrogen-treated and control female rats was demonstrated using histochemical and immunocytochemical methods. Serial section analysis of vibratome sections through the entire ventromedial nucleus showed that NADPH diaphorase cellular staining was localized primarily in the ventrolateral subdivision. NADPH diaphorase staining was visible in both neuronal perikarya and processes. Light microscopic immunocytochemistry using affinity-purified polyclonal antibodies to brain nitric oxide synthase revealed a similar pattern of labelling within the ventromedial nucleus and within neurons of the ventrolateral subdivision of the ventromedial nucleus. Control experiments involved omitting the primary antibodies; no labelling was visible under these conditions. Some, but not all, neurons in the ventrolateral subdivision of the ventromedial nucleus contained both NADPH diaphorase and brain nitric oxide synthase as demonstrated by co-localization of these two enzymes in individual cells of this area. That NADPH diaphorase and brain nitric oxide synthase were found in estrogen-binding cells was shown by co-localization of NADPH diaphorase and estrogen receptor and brain nitric oxide synthase and estrogen receptor at the light and ultrastructural levels, respectively. Our studies suggest that brain nitric oxide synthase is present and may be subject to estrogenic influences in lordosis-relevant neurons in the ventrolateral subdivision of the ventromedial nucleus. The hypothalamus is a primary subcortical regulatory center controlling sympathetic function. Therefore, not only is nitric oxide likely to be important for reproductive behavior, but also for the regulation of responses to emotional stress and other autonomic functions.  相似文献

Oxygen is a powerful trigger for cellular reactions and is used in many pathologies, including oxidative stress. However, the effects of oxygen over time and at different partial pressures remain poorly understood. In this study, the metabolic responses of normobaric oxygen intake for 1 h to mild (30%) and high (100%) inspired fractions were investigated. Fourteen healthy non-smoking subjects (7 males and 7 females; age: 29.9 ± 11.1 years, height: 168.2 ± 9.37 cm; weight: 64.4 ± 12.3 kg; BMI: 22.7 ± 4.1) were randomly assigned in the two groups. Blood samples were taken before the intake at 30 min, 2 h, 8 h, 24 h, and 48 h after the single oxygen exposure. The level of oxidation was evaluated by the rate of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the levels of isoprostane. Antioxidant reactions were observed by total antioxidant capacity (TAC), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase (CAT). The inflammatory response was measured using interleukin-6 (IL-6), neopterin, creatinine, and urates. Oxidation markers increased from 30 min on to reach a peak at 8 h. From 8 h post intake, the markers of inflammation took over, and more significantly with 100% than with 30%. This study suggests a biphasic response over time characterized by an initial “permissive oxidation” followed by increased inflammation. The antioxidant protection system seems not to be the leading actor in the first place. The kinetics of enzymatic reactions need to be better studied to establish therapeutic, training, or rehabilitation protocols aiming at a more targeted use of oxygen.  相似文献
