Psychologists in medical schools.

Describes the results of a survey conducted by the Committee on Psychology in Medical Schools for the Education and Training Board of the American Psychological Association, utilizing 84 reports from medical schools in 1967-1969 period. Psychology's growth in medical school has followed no standard pattern, but has developed in unique fashion at each school as a function of local constellations of factors. The great expansion of psychology in medical schools has occurred in the last 2 decades, but the period of rapid growth has now ended. While psychology is still most often based within the department of psychiatry, greater diversity of locations is found in schools where psychology was established more recently. Teaching is a major function of medical school psychologists. Their main teaching contribution is to medical education, but they are also involved at all levels of psychological education. Research, which covers the full range of psychological interests, and clinical services, which are beginning to reach out into the community, are the other main functions of medical school psychologists. The satisfactions found in the medical school as a professional environment relate to the vast array of clinical populations, research facilities, and disciplines available there. Dissatisfactions are primarily a result of inadequate recognition as an independent discipline. Overwhelmingly, medical school psychologists desire a more autonomous position for psychology, most often through the mechanism of an independent department of psychology. Other mechanisms recommended are the behavioral sciences department and the "single faculty model" in which 1 university department provides psychological training to all the schools of the university. An analysis of some features of the interview with the interaction chronograph.

Continuation of research with the interaction chronograph, i.e., objective interview procedures. The results "indicate that an individual begins his interview with a characteristic reliable pattern, but that this pattern does not remain stable if it is permitted to continue for a full 30 minutes, and that it does not vary in any regular fashion." Differential regulation of early phase and late phase responses in human neutrophils by cAMP

The elevation of intracellular levels of cyclic AMP by forskolin stimulation of adenylate cyclase regulates early and late phase neutrophil responses differentially. Early phase neutrophil responses as measured by shape change in response to chemotactic factors, transmigration across a polycarbonate membrane and priming were unaffected by forskolin-induced elevation of intracellular cAMP. Late phase neutrophil responses such as release of superoxide anions, activation of phospholipase A2 and platelet activating factor (PAF) synthesis were inhibited by increasing intracellular cAMP through the addition of 10 microM forskolin for 10 min prior to stimulation. N-Formyl-methionyl-leucyl-phenylalanine-stimulated arachidonic acid release fell from 9.3% (untreated cells) to 4.6% in forskolin-treated cells. PAF generation was also inhibited from 430 pg/10(6) cells in untreated cells to background levels in forskolin-treated cells (110 pg/10(6) cells). Also, the reduction of cytochrome c by superoxide anions fell from 4.2 nmol/10(6) cells in the absence of forskolin to 2.0 nmol/10(6) cells following forskolin treatment. These results indicate that in neutrophils the elevation of cAMP acts differentially on cellular responses, not affecting early activation events, but markedly inhibiting late events such as the release of inflammatory mediators.     

Determination of DNA damage in F344 rats induced by geometric isomers of tamoxifen and analogues

The transformation of Trypanosoma cruzi epimastigotes to mammal-infective metacyclic trypomastigotes (metacyclogenesis) can be performed in vitro under chemically defined conditions (TAU 3AAG medium). During this process, changes in the nature of cell surface sugar composition and sugar distribution was evaluated using FITC and gold-labeled lectins and observed by flow cytometry and transmission electron microscopy. The pattern of labeling with the lectins from Triticum vulgaris (WGA), Arachis hypogaea (PNA), Limax flavus (LFA), Canavalia ensiformis (Con-A), and Ricinus communis (RCA-I) significantly changed during the metacyclogenic process. The results obtained are discussed in relation to the role played by T. cruzi cell surface carbohydrate residues on the process of parasite-host cell interaction.
