Kaleidoscope micro-optic star coupler

Practical 4-port and 8-port kaleidoscope micro-optic star couplers for optical-fibre data links have been developed, with the advantages of low insertion losses well balanced among the ports, high reliability, easy fabrication and small size. This coupler utilises image formation by multireflection at the side planes of a cross-sectionally wedge-shaped small rod lens, and is therefore called a kaleidoscope micro-optic star coupler.     

Prediction of radiosensitivity of individual mice by multidimensional analysis

Changes in the RNA-content of isolated anterior horn motor neurons from the 7th cervical segment were studied during the postnatal development of pre- and postnatally undernourished, and normally nourished rats. The motor neurons of the anterior horn were isolated by micromanipulation from Carnoy-fixed sections. The neuronal RNA-content was determined by microchemical methods according to Edstr?m (1964). The observation was made that moderate pre- and postnatal undernutrition does not alter the normal RNA-accumulation in anterior horn motor neurons during the preweaning period. After weaning the cellular RNA incorporation decreases but again reaches normal values at the age of 39 days. The present results are compared with those of a previous study (Haltia 1970) in which rats were severely undernourished postnatally.     

Formation of a Rhenium-base Diffusion-barrier-coating System on Ni-base Single Crystal Superalloy and its Stability at 1,423 K

A diffusion-barrier-coating system having a duplex structure comprised of an inner Re(W)–Cr–Ni layer and an outer Ni-aluminide layer was formed on a fourth generation, single-crystal Ni-base superalloy by using electroplating of Re(Ni) and Ni(W) films, Al- and Cr- (high-Cr and low-Cr) pack cementations, and a combination of the two treatments. With the ReW-high-Cr coating, fine needle- or plate-like precipitates formed in the alloy substrate below the inner Re(W, Cr, Ni) layer, while there was little of this precipitate with the ReW-low-Cr pack-cementation coating. The inner, Re-base alloy layer in the ReW-high-Cr coating was identified to be a σ-(Re,Cr,W,Ni) phase, while the inner layer of the ReW-low-Cr was a mixture of σ-(Re,Cr,W,Ni) and δ-Re(Cr,W,Ni) phases. After heating the coated alloys at 1,150 °C for 100 h in air, the outer Al reservoir layer became β-NiAl containing (31–33)Al with α-Cr particles and fine precipitates of γ′-Ni₃Al with both the ReW-high-Cr and ReW-low-Cr treatments. In the case of the ReW-high-Cr coating there were numerous light-colored, needle-like precipitates formed deep in the alloy substrate under the inner layer, while in the case of the ReW-low-Cr coating γ′ appeared near the inner layer. It was found that the inner, Re-base alloy layer acted as a diffusion barrier, and that its structure was maintained with little change in composition after 100 h of oxidation at 1,150 °C. K. Z. Injection-locked 1.5 ?m InGaAsP/InP lasers capable of 450 Mbit/s transmission over 106 km

The fluctuation of longitudinal modes of a high-bit-rate modulated 1.5 ?m InGaAsP/InP laser is greatly improved by injection-locking technology. A 106 km transmission at 300 Mbit/s and 450 Mbit/s was achieved with tolerable transmission losses of 37.2 dB and 36.2 dB, respectively, which implies a potential transmission distance of over 145 km.     

Effects of gender, age and diagnosis on perceived parental care and protection in adolescents

To assess whether perceived parental care and protection varied according to age and gender of the child and whether they were associated with psychiatric diagnoses, these constructs were measured with the Parental Bonding Instrument in a cohort of non-referred adolescents (n = 762), in a clinically referred cohort (n = 1299), and in a group of adolescents from the referred cohort (n = 365) for whom DSM-III diagnoses were available. Significant differences in parental care and protection according to clinical status, age, gender and diagnosis were found. However, perceived parental affectionless control was not associated with emotional disorders in adolescents, contrary to reports in adult subjects, but with clinical status.
