In 12 depressed inpatients referred for bilateral electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), each patient was titrated at the first treatment session by using an ascending method-of-limits procedure with a step-wise increase in pulse frequency (frequency titration) or train duration (duration titration). At the second treatment session, seizure threshold was redetermined by using the method (frequency or duration titration) not used at the first treatment. Frequency or duration was maintained at the lowest level when the other parameter was titrated. Seizure threshold was significantly lower with duration titration (mean, 90 mC; SD, 27.3) than frequency titration (mean, 114 mC; SD, 35.6; p = 0.03). On average, patients in the duration-titration group required 1.2 (SD, 0.6) subconvulsive stimulations before a seizure was elicited, and patients in the frequency-titration group required 1.7 (SD, 0.9) subconvulsive stimulations before a seizure was elicited, a nonsignificant difference. These findings suggest that to elicit a seizure during ECT, increasing train duration may be slightly more efficient than increasing frequency. Basic and other clinical research findings indicate that increasing pulse width may be an inefficient way to elicit a seizure. Therefore the following sequence in the determination of seizure threshold is worth considering when using dose-titration or related techniques: the train duration should be increased first before increasing pulse frequency, and the decision to increase pulse width should be reserved for patients who do not seize at the maximal duration and frequency settings. Further empiric research is needed to establish the utility of this approach.  相似文献

An experimental optical memory system is described for evaluating the optical memory characteristics of MnBi films. The preparation procedure for obtaining large uniform films is discussed. These films require about 10 mW of laser power to write 1-μm bits and a coincident field of 600 Oe to erase them. A packing density of 1.5 × 108bit/in2with a typical signal-to-noise ratio of 10 is readily achieved. Large area films have been sample tested and found to be of usable quality over 99.9 percent of the area. Test bits have been repeatedly cycled to the Curie point more than 106times retaining an adequate signal-to-noise ratio.  相似文献

The origin and nature of spurious oscillation modes that appear in mixed finite element methods are examined. In particular, the shallow water equations are considered and a modal analysis for the one-dimensional problem is developed. From the resulting dispersion relations we find that the spurious modes in elevation are associated with zero frequency and large wave number (wavelengths of the order of the nodal spacing) and consequently are zero-velocity modes. The spurious modal behavior is the result of the finite spatial discretization. By means of an artificial compressibility and limiting argument we are able to resolve the similar problem for the Navier-Stokes equations. The relationship of this simpler analysis to alternative consistency arguments is explained. This modal approach provides an explanation of the phenomenon in question and permits us to deduce the cause of the very complex behavior of spurious modes observed in numerical experiments with the shallow water equations and Navier-Stokes equations. Furthermore, this analysis is not limited to finite element formulations, but is also applicable to finite difference formulations.  相似文献

Examined susceptibility to learned helplessness among 20 children from each of kindergarten, Grade 1, Grade 3, and Grade 5 classes by exposing groups of Ss to either repeated failure or repeated success on hidden figures problems. Helplessness was measured by Ss' persistence in looking for hidden figures and their capacity to find them following repeated success or failure. It was hypothesized that younger Ss would be less susceptible to helplessness than older ones, due to age-related differences in causal attributions for success and failure. Results confirm the hypothesis in that failure, relative to success, had significantly less influence on the level of helplessness in younger Ss' behavior. It is suggested that the development of attributional capabilities during the preschool and early elementary school years has important ramifications for cognitive theories of motivation.
