A two-stage mathematical model was developed to describe adsorbate removal in a dead-end powdered activated carbon/ultrafiltration (PAC/UF) membrane process. Para-nitrophenol (PNP) was used as the model organic compound. The first stage accounted for adsorbate removal during transport from the initial PAC contact with the PNP solution to the membrane system, and the second stage accounted for additional PNP removal due to the retention of the PAC in a growing bed on the membrane surface. The PAC adsorptive capacity was described using the Langmuir isotherm, whose parameters were estimated from isotherm experiments. Transport of the PNP through the PAC particle was described using the homogeneous surface diffusion model and the surface diffusivity was estimated from batch experiments. The two stage model predicted the effluent concentrations from the PAC/UF process during the early stages of the experiments, but model improvements are required to more accurately predict the latter stages. A batch model can be used to describe the effluent PNP concentration from the PAC/UF process if dispersion is neglected. 相似文献

The feasibility of electric current prompted aerobic biodegradation of NH4+–N in an attached growth bioreactor system is demonstrated. Nitrification was induced at electric current densities of 1.25 and 2.5?mA/cm2 and with pure oxygen supplied at a rate equivalent to 1.25?mA/cm2 when the bioreactor was operated in batch mode at 6 days detention time. About 84% (27?mg/L)?NH4+–N loss was observed at the end of each detention period during all three experimental conditions, indicating that the electric current did not negatively impact the rate of nitrification. Nitrite accumulation was observed during the initial stages of nitrification experiments with 1.25?mA/cm2 current intensity, but nitrite did not accumulate during the other two sets of nitrification experiments. A mathematical model formulated to obtain the rates of biological reactions showed that rates of NH4+–N removal are similar for all aeration conditions. Abiotic experiments showed that NH4+–N was not removed electrolytically and via stripping, confirming that NH4+–N disappearance is due to biological activity. 相似文献

A comparison of the rates of substitution and elimination reactions occuring simultaneously in alkaline hydrolysis of n-amyl chloride, isoamyl chloride, n-amyl iodide and n-hexyl iodide at different temperatures and in varying alcohol-water mixtures, has been made. AA7xxx and AISI304 stainless steel (SS) are employed in promising applications. Al alloy-to-SS dissimilar joining is difficult and challenging. Major challenge in the joining of these alloys is the difficulty in mixing of these materials which possess exotic and widely distant properties. AA7475-T761 is a high strength aluminum alloy which is used in key aircraft components. Maiden AA7475-T761 and AISI304 dissimilar joints were fabricated using friction stir welding. Welding was performed with tool having pin diameter of 4 mm and offset of 1.25 mm on Aluminum side. Tool rotational speed, traverse speed and shoulder diameter were varied in the range of 450–560 rpm, 50–63 mm/min, and 12–14 mm, respectively. Mechanical tests showed that joint formed with 14 mm diameter, 560 rpm and 50 mm/min gave the best joint efficiency of 71% of Al-alloy at 7.31% elongation. The materials mixing issues during processing were analyzed with SEM mircrostructure and fractography. Metallography also revealed that offset is critical to the success of joint as it controlled effective mixing of SS and Al in 15 and 85 vol.%, respectively. SS fragments from thermo-mechanically affected zone of SS were found to be partially sheared forming layer of thickness equal to tool traverse/revolution ratio. 相似文献

D-Glucal and a series of substituted derivatives have been tested as substrates, inhibitors and inactivators of the Agrobacterium faecalis beta-glucosidase in order to probe structure/function relationships in this enzyme. D-Glucal is shown to be a substrate (kcat = 2.3 min-1, Km = 0.85 mM) undergoing hydration with stereospecific protonation from the alpha-face to yield 2-deoxy-beta-D-glucose. 1-Methyl-D-glucal surprisingly serves as only a poor substrate (kcat = 0.056 min-1, Km = 57 mM), also undergoing protonation from the alpha-face. 2-Fluoro-D-glucal, however is completely inert, as a result of inductive destabilisation of the oxocarbenium ion-like transition state for protonation, and functions only as a relatively weak (Ki = 24 mM) inhibitor. Similar behaviour was seen with almond beta-glucosidase and yeast alpha-glucosidase and for the interaction of 2-fluoro-D-galactal with Escherichia coli beta-galactosidase. A series of of alpha, beta-unsaturated glucal derivatives was also synthesised and tested as potential substrates, inhibitors or inactivators of A. faecalis beta-glucosidase. Of these only 1-nitro-D-glucal functioned as a time dependent, irreversible inactivator (ki = 0.011 min-1, Ki = 5.5 mM), presumably acting as a Michael acceptor. Electrospray mass spectrometric analysis revealed multiple labeling of the enzyme by this inactivator, lessening its usefulness as an affinity label. Less reactive Michael acceptor glycals which might have been more specific (1-cyano-, 2-cyano-, 1-carboxylic acid, 1-carboxylic acid methyl ester) unfortunately did not function as inactivators or substrates, only as relatively weak reversible inhibitors (Ki = 3-96 mM). 相似文献

Ethinylestradiol (EE) has evident paradoxical effects on cancer risk for human breast and hepatic cancer which parallel in some respects its effects on estrogen-induced neoplasms in the hamster kidney and liver. EE has been shown to be only weakly carcinogenic in the hamster kidney, but the most potent carcinogenic estrogen in the hamster liver following prolonged treatment. Unexpectedly, when EE and potent carcinogenic estrogens, such as diethylstilbestrol (DES), 17beta-estradiol (E2) and Moxestrol (MOX), are administered concomitantly, estrogen-induced carcinogenesis in the kidney is completely prevented. In studying this novel finding, we found that, compared with E2 exposure alone, EE at 0.05 and 1.0 nM significantly (P < 0.001) inhibited the rise in proliferation of cultured primary hamster proximal renal tubular (PRT) cells in the presence of E2 (1.0 nM). Consistent with these findings, combined EE + DES treatment for 5.0 months reduced hamster kidney c-myc, c-fos and c-jun RNA expression to 43, 37 and 52%, respectively, compared with levels observed after DES treatment alone. Interestingly, TAM + DES treatment for the same period also resulted in the same low level of RNA expression of these proto-oncogenes. c-MYC, c-FOS and c-JUN protein products were comparably reduced after either EE + DES or TAM + DES treatment. It appears that c-fos expression and c-FOS protein levels in the hamster kidney were more responsive to TAM inhibition. These data demonstrate that EE possesses unique anti-tumorigenic properties in vivo in the hamster kidney. Additionally, the observed anti-estrogen-like effect of EE on cell proliferation of cultured PRT cells suggests that EE may interfere critically with estrogen receptor (ER)-mediated mitogenic pathway(s) affected by potent carcinogenic estrogens, thus preventing subsequent gene dysregulation and, hence, tumor development. Based on competition studies, the differential binding of EE to hamster kidney ER relative to that of the other estrogens (E2, DES, MOX) appears not to contribute to the prevention of estrogen carcinogenesis at this organ site by EE. 相似文献

The contents and distribution of natural (214Pb, 214Bi, 228Ac, and 208Tl) and technogenic (90Sr, 137Cs, and 60Co) radionuclides in the Kara Sea bottom sediments was analyzed by using the materials collected by R/V "Pomor" (Murmansk Marine Biological Institute). In 1994, no high (critical) concentrations of technogenic radioisotopes were found in the sea sediments, while the spots (regions) of elevated 137Cs content found in 1984 were not confirmed in 1994. It was proposed that the main sources of entry of technogenic radionuclides in the sea sediments in the last years are the flow of the Ob'-Yenisei waters and container burials of radioactive waste in the sea, which appeared to have been markedly corroded. The latter is confirmed by detection in some places of 60Co, which was not previously found in the sediments. 相似文献

In an attempt to establish a standardized rating system for CT of the paranasal sinuses, the Committee on Rhinology and Paranasal Sinus Disease of the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery instituted a protocol for the review of sinus CT scans at six international sites. Fifty identical scans were rated by four otolaryngologists at each site according to five established sinus CT staging systems. Twenty of 24 reviewers repeated the rating session at least 1 week later to determine intrarater variability. The number of CT scans that could not be classified by a particular rating system ranged from 1.3% to 5.5%. The range of intrarater agreement (kappa = 0.39 to 0.74) exceeded that of interrater agreement (kappa = 0.18 to 0.49). A skewed distribution of CT scans resulted in a system with high rater agreement but poor ability to differentiate among disease states. The use of a numeric rating system to assign a score to each scan produced a comprehensive and disease-sensitive system, but one with low rater agreement. A precise definition of mucosal thickening in terms of millimeters appeared to enhance the raters' ability to assign stage and improve a system's comprehensiveness and reproducibility. On the basis of these findings, recommendations are made for the use of CT rating systems to study clinical outcomes in patients with chronic sinusitis. 相似文献
