Local mechanisms of relationship between colloid-osmotic pressure and ophthalmic tone in patients with diabetes mellitus

The paper presents 5 cases of histologically verified tuberculous peritonitis followed up by the author in 1994-1996. All patients were admitted to hospital and undergone surgical intervention for emergency indications. The main symptoms were intoxication, abdominal pain and enlargement. Two typical cases are described. Tuberculous peritonitis is recommended to be included into the differential diagnostic list of acute surgical abdominal diseases.     

A site-specific endonuclease from thermophilic strain Bacillus species ZE is a ClaI isoschizomer

Strain Bacillus species ZE with a maximal yield of the ClaI isoschizomer was chosen from 12 natural thermophilic strains producing ClaI isomers. The yield is 110 times higher than that of the ClaI prototype endonuclease from Caryophanon latum L. The enzyme is sensitive to DNA dam-methylation and is highly stable under storage.     

Validation of a medical economic standard (as exemplified by pediatric acute cranio-cerebral injury)

Chronic insulin overdosage, hyperinsulinemia, atherosclerosis

Biochemical and immunological indices were studied with regard to insulin dose in 321 patients with diabetes mellitus type I. Overdosage of insulin in these patients induced significantly more frequently clinical manifestations of atherosclerosis, marked shifts in lipid spectrum of the serum and in immunological picture. In diabetics on physiological doses of insulin atherosclerosis is a rare finding, lipid spectrum and immunological indices in stable normoglycemia did not differ much from controls. Implication of chronic insulin overdosage in mechanism of atherosclerosis onset is suggested.     

Motuporamine Derivatives as Antimicrobial Agents and Antibiotic Enhancers against Resistant Gram‐Negative Bacteria

Dihydromotuporamine C and its derivatives were evaluated for their in vitro antimicrobial activities and antibiotic enhancement properties against Gram‐negative bacteria and clinical isolates. The mechanism of action of one of these derivatives, MOTU‐N44, was investigated against Enterobacter aerogenes by using fluorescent dyes to evaluate outer‐membrane depolarization and permeabilization. Its efficiency correlated with inhibition of dye transport, thus suggesting that these molecules inhibit drug transporters by de‐energization of the efflux pump rather than by direct interaction of the molecule with the pump. This suggests that depowering the efflux pump provides another strategy to address antibiotic resistance.     

Cytogenetic and molecular-cytogenetic investigation of Rett syndrome: analysis of 31 cases

Rett syndrome (RS) is a progressive encephalopathy restricted to the female sex. In the present study we investigated 30 females and one male with RS by cytogenetic and molecular-cytogenetic methods. We failed to identify any chromosomal rearrangements within the female groups and no correlation between fra(X)(p22) and RS in either the female group or the male. The boy with RS has karyotype 46,XY/47,XXY with abnormal cell clone (47,XXY) in 6-12% of his lymphocytes (revealed by fluorescence in situ hybridization analysis (FISH) of interphase cells with chromosome X-specific DNA probe). Our results indicated a possible connection between RS and X-chromosome replication disturbance. A late-replicating X-chromosome with a specific banding pattern (type 'C') has been observed in RS patients only. We propose to analyse the X-chromosome replication pattern as a test for confirmation of RS at preclinical diagnosis.     

The chemical stability of enkephalin-like tetrapeptides in a cannula implanted in the rat neostriatum for multiple microinjections

A method for identification of Listeria in food samples was developed. It consisted of cultivating of suspected specimen on standard agar medium, direct absorption of grown colonies onto nitrocellulose membrane and processing of the latter with rabbit serum raised against purified cell wall protein Lm79/39 of L. monocytogenes. Analysis using anti-rabbit peroxidase conjugate and 4-chloro-1-naphthol and H2O2 solutions allowed direct detection of Listeria colonies which remained readily available for subsequent isolation.
