It is common experience that aged surfaces are often difficult to bond to. We report an examination of bonding to thermally-aged epoxy surfaces, using as the adhesive the same epoxy as that of the aged surface. The cured and postcured epoxy was aged at 200 ° C, with the ageing time varying from 2 to 8 h. The fracture energy of the bond line was measured by mode I cleavage under conditions of relatively slow crack growth. The bondline fracture energy was found to decrease logarithmically with ageing time. The fracture energies for bonds to surfaces aged for 2, 4, and 8 h at 200 ° C were 0.077, 0.059, and 0.050 kJ M–2, respectively. These compare to 0.13 kJ M–2 for a bond to an unaged surface and 0.21 kJ m–2 for bulk fracture. Fracture surfaces resulting from both slow and rapid fracture were examined by optical and scanning electron microscopy. Fracture features different from those arising from bulk fracture were found. Areas with good adhesion occurred amidst fields of featureless fracture surface; the frequency and size of these areas decreased with increased ageing time. Evidence of plastic deformation was found, always occurring on the new side of the bond: ridges parallel with crack propagation at high crack speeds and subsurface undulations perpendicular to crack propagation at low speeds. The bond has the effect of channelling the crack along the bondline, but fracture does not always remain exactly at the interface. Fracture often occurred a relatively constant distance away from the interface, suggesting that the presence of the interface was felt for some distance.  相似文献

Eighty beef crossbred steers with an average weight of 493 kg (4·66 kg SD) were allocated at random to one of five treatments to assess the effects of withholding feed and water on carcass shrinkage and meat quality. The five treatments were: slaughter from the feedlot (T1); and 12, 24, 36 and 48 h periods without feed and water prior to slaughter (T2-5).Weights were taken of the live animal and the carcass to monitor shrinkage along with relevant meat quality measurements. There were no treatment differences (P > 0·05) in initial farm weight, but plant weight shrinkage increased from 31gkg(-1) for T1 to 106 g kg(-1) for T5. Warm carcass weight decreased (P < 0·05) from 278·8 kg for T1, to 270·7 kg for T3 and 261·9 kg for T5. Liver, alimentary tract components, hide and head decreased as a proportion of farm weight as time without feed and water increased. Muscle pH at 6 days post mortem was increased (P < 0·05) in T3-5 compared to T1, with the result that muscle colour became darker, and steaks had less drip loss. Shear values increased (P < 0·05) from 6·3 kg in T1 to 7·7 kg in T4 and T5 indicating an increase in muscle toughness as time without feed and water increased. It was concluded that steers lose live weight rapidly within the first 24 h without feed and water, and that these relatively short periods of time (24 h) can have detrimental effects on carcass shrinkage and muscle quality.  相似文献

For a class of multi‐input and multi‐output nonlinear uncertainty systems, a novel approach to design a nonlinear controller using minimax linear quadratic regulator (LQR) control is proposed. The proposed method combines a feedback linearization method with the robust minimax LQR approach in the presence of time‐varying uncertain parameters. The uncertainties, which are assumed to satisfy a certain integral quadratic constraint condition, do not necessarily satisfy a generalized matching condition. The procedure consists of feedback linearization of the nominal model and linearization of the remaining nonlinear uncertain terms with respect to each individual uncertainty at a local operating point. This two‐stage linearization process, followed by a robust minimax LQR control design, provides a robustly stable closed loop system. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach, an application study is provided for a flight control problem of an air‐breathing hypersonic flight vehicle (AHFV), where the outputs to be controlled are the longitudinal velocity and altitude, and the control variables are the throttle setting and elevator deflection. The proposed method is used to derive a linearized uncertainty model for the longitudinal motion dynamics of the AHFV first, and then a robust minimax LQR controller is designed, which is based on this uncertainty model. The controller is synthesized considering seven uncertain aerodynamic and inertial parameters. The stability and performance of the synthesized controller is evaluated numerically via single scenario simulations for particular cruise conditions as well as a Monte‐Carlo type simulation based on numerous cases. It is observed that the control scheme proposed in this paper performs better, especially from the aspect of robustness to large ranges of uncertainties, than some controller design schemes previously published in the literature. The dynamics of superparamagnetic particles subject to competing magnetic and viscous drag forces have been examined with a uniform, stationary, external magnetic field. In this approach, competing drag and magnetic forces were created in a fluid suspension of superparamagnetic particles that was confined in a capillary tube; competing viscous drag and magnetic forces were established by rotating the tube. A critical Mason number was determined for conditions under which the rotation of the capillary prevents the formation of chains from individual particles. The statistics of chain length was investigated by image analysis while varying parameters such as the rotation speed and the viscosity of the liquid. The measurements showed that the rate of particle chain formation was decreased with increased viscosity and rotation speed; the particle dynamics could be quantified by the same dimensionless Mason number that has been demonstrated for rotating magnetic fields. The potential for enhancement of mixing in a bioassay was assessed using a fast chemical reaction that was diffusion-limited. Reducing the Mason number below the critical value, so that chains were formed in the fluid, gave rise to a modest improvement in the time to completion of the reaction.  相似文献

The reduction of dissolved oxygen has been studied over a wide conductivity range for use in steady or nonsteady hydrodynamic measurements. Mass transfer fluctuations can be analysed statistically to obtain the power spectra of hydrodynamic fluctuations. This requires a consideration of the proton reduction, which prevents diffusion from limiting the current. The transfer function for deducing the hydrodynamic spectra from mass transfer spectra includes not only transport effects but also kinetic effects which account for the finite rate of the reaction. The experimental study was performed using electrohydrodynamic (EHD) impedance.  相似文献

The basic longitudinal texture, which is present everywhere on the fracture surfaces of glassy thermosets and is the finest texture observed on such surfaces, consists of low ridges and shallow grooves that are aligned parallel with the direction of crack propagation. The periodicity of the basic longitudinal texture, i.e., the average lateral separation between the ridges (or grooves), has been found to be characteristic of materials. This and other properties were measured for a series of rigid epoxy specimens made from diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A and methylhexahydrophthalic anhydride. For the series of epoxies studied, the glass transition temperatures varied from 76 to 143 °C, the room temperature Young's modulus varied from 2.29 to 2.97 G Pa, the room temperature yield stress in compression varied from 99 to 128 M Pa, the room temperature Knoop hardness numbers varied from 133.5 to 163.5, the rubbery modulus at 200'C varied from 12.8 to 21.6 MPa, and the periodicity of the basic longitudinal texture varied from 205 to 368 nm. Only properties of the liquid state, namely glass transition temperature and the rubbery modulus, correlated well with periodicity of the basic longitudinal texture. This suggests that the basic longitudinal texture is the remnant left on the fracture surfaces of a liquid state that must have developed during fracture. This suggests in turn that liquefaction is an intrinsic part of the brittle fracture of polymer network glasses.  相似文献
