The influence of metal ions on the adsorption process and corrosion inhibition of pimeloyl-1,5-di-hydroxamic acid (C7) on carbon steel surface in neutral solutions has been investigated by surface analytical and electrochemical techniques. Effective corrosion inhibition given by C7 in the presence of Zn2+ and Ni2+ is believed to be associated with the ability of the hydroxamic acid to form stable slightly soluble complexes with these cations. The influence of the metal ions on the inhibition efficiency is primarily related to the stability constants of C7-cation complexes. Magnesium has no effect on the inhibition performance as it has low stability constant with C7. It was found that the inhibition by C7/cation mixtures depends greatly on the molar ratio and immersion time. 相似文献

The effects of floodplain fragmentation by dykes on grassland vegetation were evaluated through field studies along the Middle Elbe River (federal states Saxony‐Anhalt and Brandenburg, Germany). Plant species composition was examined in 206 sites between 1996 and 1998 in the entire floodplain, which can be divided into the floodplain types ‘recent floodplain’, ‘older floodplain’ (which is separated from the recent one by dykes) and the ‘margin of the floodplain’ (which is the part of the older floodplain that forms the boundary and is furthest from the river). Dynamics in hydrology were examined weekly between November 1996 and February 1999 with the help of 40 water level wells which were installed near the studied sites. The hydrological parameters ‘average water level’, ‘average groundwater level’, ‘flooding duration’, ‘flooding depth higher 50 cm above soil surface’ and ‘standard deviation of the water level line’ were calculated to characterize the considered floodplain types and to relate species composition to hydrology. Furthermore several parameters of current management of the vegetation were recorded to evaluate the importance of land use versus hydrology for floodplain grasslands. Detrended and canonical correspondence analysis (DCA, CCA) were used to identify major environmental gradients governing the vegetation and to determine if there is a relationship between the different locations within the floodplain, variation in species composition, and gradients of measured environmental variables. The results indicate that the vegetation is closely related to a combination of water level fluctuations, which are different among the floodplain types, and soil moisture, while type and intensity of current management are not important in this context. The results of contingency tables underline the significance of dykes for the occurrence and absence of individual species among the floodplain types. The observed patterns can also be explained by the different hydrological properties of the recent and older floodplain as the results of logistic regression reveal. Furthermore, disturbance and dispersal processes and their alteration by dykes have to be taken into account to explain the pattern of species occurrence. Partial ordination detected residual differences in vegetation among the different floodplain types after accounting for the effects of the measured environmental variables. We investigated the influence of humic and fulvic acid concentration (in the range of 1-1000 mg/L) on the binding of the two trace metals Cu(II) and Pb(II). The ability of the non-ideal competitive adsorption (NICA)-Donnan model to correctly predict Cu and Pb binding at low humic or fulvic acid concentration and lower ionic strength (0.01 M NaNO3), based on model parameters obtained from experiments conducted at high humic or fulvic acid concentrations (approximately 1000 mg/L) and higher ionic strength (0.1 M NaNO3), was tested. The binding of Cu and Pb to humic and fulvic acid in 0.01 M NaNO3 was determined over wide ranges in proton and metal ion activities using three different methods: ligand exchange-adsorptive differential pulse cathodic stripping voltammetry at low humic or fulvic acid concentrations (1-3 mg/L), differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry at intermediate humic or fulvic acid concentrations (10-20 mg/L), and ion-selective electrodes at high humic or fulvic acid concentrations (approximately 1000 mg/L). The results demonstrate that binding isotherms for Cu and Pb can be measured at low humic or fulvic acid concentration using suitable voltammetric techniques. The binding isotherms for Cu and Pb to humic and fulvic acid obtained at constant pH values in the range of pH 4-8 are shown to be independent of humic and fulvic acid concentration. The NICA-Donnan model, calibrated for Cu and Pb binding using data measured at high humic and fulvic acid concentrations and an ionic strength of 0.1 M, accurately predicts Cu and Pb binding at low humic and fulvic acid concentrations and lower ionic strength (0.01 M). We conclude that NICA-Donnan parameters obtained by fitting experimental data measured with ion-selective electrodes at high humic or fulvic acid concentrations can be used for geochemical modeling of soils and aquatic environments with much lower concentrations of humic or fulvic acids. 相似文献

BACKGROUND: The use of enzymes in organic solvents has extended the scale of their practical applications. Papain has been widely used in chemical syntheses because of its broad substrate specificity. The aim of the present study was to improve the stability of papain in aqueous tetrahydrofuran (THF) by using different saccharides. The effects of these carbohydrates on the structure of papain were followed by means of circular dichroism (CD) and fluorescence spectroscopic measurements. RESULTS: In contrast with most organic solvents, 60% (i.e. 600 mL L?1) THF practically inactivated the enzyme within 30 min. Sugars protected papain from THF‐induced inactivation in the sequence D ‐ribose > D ‐fructose > D ‐glucose > D ‐saccharose > D ‐raffinose. Ribose at 1.6 mol L?1 proved the most effective stabiliser: in 60% THF in the presence of ribose, papain preserved about 55% of its initial activity after 2 h. Fluorescence and near‐UV CD spectroscopic measurements revealed local changes in the papain conformation. With decrease in the free amino group content of the enzyme, protein‐carbohydrate interactions (Schiff base formation) were detected. CONCLUSION: These results demonstrate that the catalytic activity and stability of papain may be increased in aqueous THF by using different carbohydrates, when a more compact structure of the enzyme is formed. We describe the synthesis of a series of sialic acid‐conjugated, polyglycerol‐based nanoparticles with diameters in the range of 1–100 nm. Particle sizes were varied along with the degree of functionalization to match the corresponding virus size and receptor multiplicity in order to achieve maximum efficiency. To build up these architectures, we used biocompatible, hyperbranched polyglycerols as scaffolds and recently developed polyglycerol‐based nanogels, the sizes of which can be varied between 2–4 nm and 40–100 nm, respectively. We demonstrate here that such multivalent nanoparticles inhibit influenza A virus cell binding and fusion and consequently infectivity. The potential of multivalency is evident from larger particles showing very efficient inhibition of viral infection up to 80 %. Indeed, both the size of the nanoparticle and the amount of ligand density are important determinants of inhibition efficiency. The inhibitory activity of the tested polymeric nanoparticles drastically increased with size. Particles with similar dimensions to the virus (50–100 nm) are exceedingly effective. We also observed a saturation point in degree of surface functionalization (i.e. ligand density), above which inhibition was not significantly improved. Our study emphasizes the importance of matching particle sizes and ligand densities to mimic biological surfaces and improve interactions; this is a vital concept underlying multivalent interactions. 相似文献

Recent reports have indicated prolidase (PEPD) as a ligand of the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR). Since this receptor is involved in the promotion of cell proliferation, growth, and migration, we aimed to investigate whether prolidase may participate in wound healing in vitro. All experiments were performed in prolidase-treated human keratinocytes assessing cell vitality, proliferation, and migration. The expression of downstream signaling proteins induced by EGFR, insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), transforming growth factor β1 (TGF-β1), and β1-integrin receptors were evaluated by Western immunoblotting and immunocytochemical staining. To determine collagen biosynthesis and prolidase activity radiometric and colorimetric methods were used, respectively. Proline content was determined by applying the liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry. We found that prolidase promoted the proliferation and migration of keratinocytes through stimulation of EGFR-downstream signaling pathways in which the PI3K/Akt/mTOR axis was involved. Moreover, PEPD upregulated the expression of β1-integrin and IGF-1 receptors and their downstream proteins. Proline concentration and collagen biosynthesis were increased in HaCaT cells under prolidase treatment. Since extracellular prolidase as a ligand of EGFR induced cell growth, migration, and collagen biosynthesis in keratinocytes, it may represent a potential therapeutic approach for the treatment of skin wounds. 相似文献

We have introduced a novel solvent-based method to roughen polymer surfaces and characterized treated polypropylene (PP). The method consists of three main steps: solvent treatment, drying, and peeling. We investigated the effects of process parameters such as time of immersion in the solvent, solvent temperature, and drying temperature on the surface morphology created. The structure formed on the surface is mainly influenced by solvent temperature and drying temperature. We also characterized the wetting behavior of the surfaces. The patterned surfaces exhibit superhydrophobic characteristics with a high water contact angle (CA) (>155 °) and low water contact hysteresis (<5°). Adding an effective nucleating agent to PP makes it possible to generate outstanding CAs (>160°) and tailor spherulite sizes. The method is simple and scalable, therefore this superhydrophobic material is easy to mass-produce. 相似文献
