Contemporary concepts of the problem of hydrocephaly]

A lymphocyte population was studied of natural killer cells in an acute phase of myocardial infarction during its uncomplicated course and in case of development of pneumonia. MI patients demonstrate some defect in the EK-cellular link of immunity, which fact can be of pathogenetic significance for the development of the inflammatory changes in the bronchopulmonary system.     

Serological properties of HIV-1 isolates from the focus of an epidemic in the Gomel region of the Belarus Republic (1996)

Immunoreactivity of sera obtained in 1996 from HIV-1-infected intravenous narcomaniacs from an epidemic focus in Gomel region, Belarus, is studied with a panel of 10-16-component synthetic peptides simulating apical epitope of surface glycoprotein gp120 V3 loop of HIV-1 variants. Comparative analysis of resultant spectra with representative immunoreactivity spectra of sera from a sampling of HIV-1-positive sera collected in 1986-1997 in different regions of the former USSR demonstrated a high homogeneity of immunoreactivity spectra of sera from Gomel region. Serotypes of HIV-1 A/C variants circulating in populations of intravenous narcomaniacs in the focus in Gomel region in 1996 and in Southern and South-Eastern Ukraine in 1995-1996 are similar. This confirms a previous conclusion about the prevalence of A/C serotype among intravenous narcomaniacs in the former USSR.     

Structure of O-specific polysaccharide from Proteus mirabilis O10, containing a new component of O-antigens--L-altruronic acid

An acidic O-specific polysaccharide was obtained by mild acid degradation of the lipopolysaccharide of Proteus mirabilis O10 and studied after full acid hydrolysis and carboxyl reduction by 1H- and 13C-NMR spectroscopy, including two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy (COSY), H-detected heteronuclear 1H,13C multi-quantum coherence (HMQC), and rotating-frame nuclear Overhauser effect spectroscopy (ROESY). It was found that the polysaccharide contains 2-acetamido-2-deoxy-D-glucose, 2-acetamido-2-deoxy-D-galactose, D-galacturonic acid, and L-altruronic acid, and the following structure of the branched tetrasaccharide repeating unit of the polysaccharide was established: [sequence: see text]     

Clinical morphology of pneumoconiosis]

Different methods of primary mandibular reconstruction carried out at the Tata Memorial Cancer Hospital range from the pectoralis major myocutaneous or osteomyocutaneous composite flap, which is the most frequently performed procedure, to a free vascularised composite tissue transfer with microvascular anastomosis, including, iliac crest free vascularised bone grafts or radial artery forearm flap free vascularised radius bone grafts, free vascularised fibular bone grafts and silastic mandibular implants. The clinical results of immediate mandibular reconstruction with a silastic mandibular implant (SMI) in 69 patients is presented. Out of the 69 cases, 2 patients died in the early post-operative period. Twenty (30%) SMI were retained for a period of 1 year to 5 years. Forty seven (70%) SMI were retained for a period of less than 1 year. These implants have been used in a variety of cases, with or without major flap reconstruction, where a skeletal support was indicated, especially after mandibular arch resection. The results of this series indicates the importance of these implants as a short term spacer, even in advanced, fungating lesions of head and neck cancer where the risk of infection, haematoma and salivary leak is very high. Bone replacements were undertaken at a later date in suitable cases. The effects of preoperative chemotherapy and radiotherapy on the retention of these implants has also been studied.     

Study on structural gene expression in human insulinoma

A human insulinoma cDNA library was constructed in the expression plasmid vector pUEX1. The clone pUEX1Ins12 was selected by means of hybridization with an insulin probe. It codes for full size amino acid sequence preproinsulin. The bacterial strain pUEX3Ins8 producing proinsulin as beta-galactosidase fusion protein was obtained for the use of recombinant protein as an antigen in an ELISA to detect serum antibodies in subjects with IDDM. Recombinant clones containing the middle, N- and C-terminal domains of the GAD65, the major autoantigen in IDDM, were constructed in pVEX1. These clones may become important tools to study the nature of GAD autoreactivity in IDDM. The clone pHICEO.9 was selected from the human insulinoma cDNA library by immunoscreening with total human insulinoma protein antibodies. This clone expresses the C-terminal fragment of human cholesterol esterase/lipase containing its antigenic determinant and can be used for blood lipase determination. Four clones containing cDNA inserts (0.47-1.42 kb) without any significant homologies to the known sequences in the Gene Bank were obtained by means of statistic selection.
