Effect of Rodiola rosacea on the resistance of isolated heart from stressed-out rats to ischemic and reperfusion injury

This study was performed to investigate the capability of iontophoretic delivery of prostaglandin E1 (PGE1) and the effect of this treatment on the viability of skin flaps on the rat dorsum model as described by Hammond and Ronald in 1993. The PGE1 level in the tissue sample under the electrode was assessed with radioimmunoassay. The iontophoretic treatment (for 20 minutes at 4 mA) with PGE1 solution (20 micrograms PGE1 in 2 ml saline) showed a significant increase of PGE1 in the flap tissue under the negative electrode (p < 0.05). Very little increase was observed after the iontophoresis of saline alone. This was not statistically significant. Iontophoretic treatment was given for 5 consecutive days following flap elevation. The survival area on the seventh postoperative day was significantly greater in the PGE1-treated flaps than that of either the control or saline-treated flaps. These results confirm the beneficial effect of iontophoretic treatment with PGE1 on the augmentation of skin flap viability.     

The role of Staphylococcus epidermidis persistence factors in the infectious process

The role of the complex of S. epidermidis persistence factors in the chronization of the infectious process and the formation of the resident carrier state was established.

An evaluation of the cardioprotective action of the preparation ICRF-187 (Cardioxane) during the treatment of breast cancer with large doses of adriamycin

Twenty females with disseminated breast cancer received courses of polychemotherapy with 21-day intervals. The regimen comprised adriamycin (ADM), cyclophosphamide and 5-fluorouracil in the dose 50, 500 mg/m2, respectively. 30 minutes prior to the treatment the patients were given the cardioprotector cardioxan (1000 mg/m2). Cardiological control (ECG, EF according to echo-CG and radionuclide ventriculography, PP/EP M1/M2, T1/T2 according to echo-polycardiography and Doppler cardiography) was performed before the treatment and at ADM total dose 200-300 mg/m2 followed by measurements at each dose increase by 100 mg/m2. The findings showed no evidence of ADM-related cardiac damage up to ADM dose 900-1000 mg/m2 in the case of cardioxan protection, though there was a tendency to M1/M2 increase which needs further studies as it suggests worsening of left ventricular diastolic contractility.     

Effect of vinblastine during high activity of the anticoagulating system on the growth of sarcoma 45 in rats and several blood indicators in animals with tumors

The strong depressive effect of vinblastine on the rat sarcoma 45 growth and intensification of this effect by the combination of vinblastine treatment with the activation of the blood anticoagulating system (BAS) were found. Vinblastine had no negative effect on the BAS activation process and induced no persistent changes in the qualitative content of leucocytes in the peripheral blood.

The use of chemotherapy in persistent gestational trophoblastic tumors continues to be refined and our understanding of the immunobiology of these tumors has substantially advanced.
