The spectral-correlational analysis of the electrical activity of the rabbit brain in the organization of a goal-directed blinking reaction

At organization of the blinking reaction directed to a cessation of the motivational hunger dominant the spectral power of biopotentials of the frontal, sensorimotor cortical areas and the blinking cortical centres of both eyes, VMH and LH increases in the range of the delta- and theta-frequencies. Coherence (Coh) of electrical activity of the frontal and sensorimotor cortical areas increases, Coh between potentials of the swallowing cortical area and the blinking cortical zones corresponding to the trained and non-trained eyes is being asymmetrically reconstructed. Coh function of the electrical activity of the LH, VMH and potentials of different cortical areas changes uniformly. Coh of electrical activity of the VMH and LH, NIII and MPO increases in the whole analysed frequency range, Coh between potentials of the MPO and LPO, LPO and VMH increases in the delta- and decreases in the theta- and alpha-frequency ranges. It is suggested that in the process of preparation of the goal-directed reaction all the cerebral cortex areas and subcortical structures under study related to alimentary motivation and the blinking function are involved into the dominant constellation.     

Possiblity of using immobilized urease for degradation of urea in blood plasma

As revealed the velocities of urea decomposition in the citrate donor plasma with soluble urease and urease immobilized by addition to carboxymethyl ester of cellulose, 2-(3'-amino-4'-methoxyphenyl)-sulphonylethyl ester of cellulose, diethylaminoester of cellulose, stained with dichlortriazine stain, or graft copolymere of cellulose and polyglycidylmetacrylate were sufficiently close to one another. Preparations of immobilized urease can be repeatedly used for urea decomposition in the citrate donor blood. Periodical treatment of the mentioned preparations with cystein solution led to a lesser decrease of enzymatic activity of the immobilized urease after repeated use.     

Venous blood return to the heart in focal myocardial ishemia and its effect on the degree of ischemic injury and the size of the ischemic area

It was established in experiments on 14 dogs that the acute character of ischemic damage to the myocardium and the size of the zone of ischemia in occlusion of the coronary artery diminish against the background of reduced venous return to the heart. The reduction in the ischemic area occurs for the most part because of a decrease of the border-line and neutral zones.     

Characteristics of the effect of nitroglycerin on hemodynamics

An examination was conducted of 45 healthy individuals 23 to 28 years of age who received nitroglycerine sublingually in a dose of 0.5 mg (15 persons) and by intravenous drip for one hour in doses of 3, 10, and 20 mg (groups of ten persons). It was shown that the drug had no essential effect on the rate of cardiac contractions and the diastolic arterial pressure. The systolic arterial pressure decreased with the increase of the nitroglycerine dose. The trend and the severity of changes in central hemodynamics were, in most cases, inversely dependent on the volume of cardiac ejection and did not depend on the dose and route of administration of the drug. With a cardiac index of 3 to 5.5 1/min/m2, this index in 71% of individuals reduced by 26% on the average. With an initial cardiac index of 2 to 2.9 1/min/m2, in 63% of individuals this index increased by 27% on the average. The authors distinguish three types of the reaction of hemodynamics to the administration of nitroglycerine: hypo-, hyper-, and eucardiac.     

Role of artificial pulmonary ventilation in mechanisms of development of generalized activity of limbic origin in postresuscitative states

It was shown in experiments on 25 dogs that the generalized a-like limbic activity is recorded on ECoG in the post-resuscitation period after 12-minute cardiac arrest largely in the cases of forced spontaneous breathing. The use of large tidal volumes of artificial lung ventilation during resuscitation significantly diminished frequency of the appearance on ECcG of the activity in question because of hypccapnia and resultant suppression of the respiratory centre. The forced work of the respiratory centre is conducive to the development of this activity by irradiating the excitaticn to the higher brain structures.     

Effects of cumene hydroperoxide on the Ca(2+)-induced Ca2+ efflux from mitochondria and on the viability of hepatoma cells

We studied the expression of hyaluronan binding proteins (HABPs) during the development of embryonic chick joints, using immunocytochemistry and biotinylated HA. The expression of actin capping proteins and of actin itself was also studied because the cytoskeleton is important in controlling HA-HABP interactions. Three cell surface HABPs were localized in the epiphyseal cartilage, articular fibrocartilage, and interzone that comprise the developing joint. Of these three HABPs, CD44 was associated with the articular fibrocartilages and interzone, whereas RHAMM and the IVd4 epitope were associated with all three tissues. Biotinylated HA was localized to interzone and articular fibrocartilages before cavity formation and within epiphyseal chondrocytes post cavitation. Actin filament bundles were observed at the developing joint line, as was the expression of the actin capping protein moesin. Manipulation of joint cavity development, using oligosaccharides of HA, disrupted joint formation and was associated with decreases in CD44 and actin filament expression as well as decreased hyaluronan synthetic capability. These results suggest that HA is actively bound by CD44 at the developing joint line and that HA-HABP interactions play a major role in the initial separation events occurring during joint formation.

Regional approaches to the expected program outcomes and specific challenges and opportunities that are unique to each region's environment are included.
