Ozone currently is being used in several drinking water treatment plants in Yugoslavia. The new Belgrade water treatment plant “Makis” is the largest one with 42 kg/h of installed ozone generating capacity and has been in operation since 1987. This paper describes the main features of ozone application in drinking water treatment. The experimental results of “Makis” pilot-plant investigations and a few examples of ozone application in Yugoslavia are presented.  相似文献

To identify potential biomarkers for improving diagnosis of melioidosis, we compared plasma metabolome profiles of melioidosis patients compared to patients with other bacteremia and controls without active infection, using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-quadruple time-of-flight mass spectrometry. Principal component analysis (PCA) showed that the metabolomic profiles of melioidosis patients are distinguishable from bacteremia patients and controls. Using multivariate and univariate analysis, 12 significant metabolites from four lipid classes, acylcarnitine (n = 6), lysophosphatidylethanolamine (LysoPE) (n = 3), sphingomyelins (SM) (n = 2) and phosphatidylcholine (PC) (n = 1), with significantly higher levels in melioidosis patients than bacteremia patients and controls, were identified. Ten of the 12 metabolites showed area-under-receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) >0.80 when compared both between melioidosis and bacteremia patients, and between melioidosis patients and controls. SM(d18:2/16:0) possessed the largest AUC when compared, both between melioidosis and bacteremia patients (AUC 0.998, sensitivity 100% and specificity 91.7%), and between melioidosis patients and controls (AUC 1.000, sensitivity 96.7% and specificity 100%). Our results indicate that metabolome profiling might serve as a promising approach for diagnosis of melioidosis using patient plasma, with SM(d18:2/16:0) representing a potential biomarker. Since the 12 metabolites were related to various pathways for energy and lipid metabolism, further studies may reveal their possible role in the pathogenesis and host response in melioidosis.  相似文献

Light induced catalytic processes have attracted significant attention during the last years for wastewater treatment due to their efficiency in decomposition of organic contaminants. In this study we report the synthesis of graphene oxide (GO)/ZnO hybrid layers with high photocatalytic efficiency using laser radiation. The results show that the hybrid layers exhibit much improved photodecomposition efficiency as compared to pure GO or ZnO both under UV and visible-light irradiation. The enhanced photocatalytic efficiency of the hybrid as compared to the reference pure ZnO and GO layers was attributed to the contribution of GO to the separation and transport of the photogenerated charge carriers. Additionally, under visible light irradiation the organic molecules can act as first sensitizers in the degradation process. The recyclability of the layers was also investigated through repetitive photodegradation cycles under UV- or visible-light irradiation. After consecutive degradation runs, the hybrid photocatalyst layers were still stable and retained high degradation efficiency, ensuring reusability. The photocatalytic activity of the layers was correlated with the gradual change of their chemical structure during consecutive degradation cycles. Owing to the high photodegradation efficiency, reusability, and ease of recovery the synthesised hybrid layers consisting of easily available materials are suitable for environmental purification applications.  相似文献

The influence of the carbon black content on the mechanical and electrical properties of polypropylene/carbon black composites prepared by different processing procedures was investigated. The formation of a continuous conducting network in the insulating matrix and, consequently, the percolation threshold depend strongly on the processing route and influence both the mechanical and electrical properties of the prepared composites. Effect of layered silicates on structure of microfibrillar composites (MFCs) with reinforcing PA6 fibrils formed in situ by melt drawing was studied. Clay was added to HDPE/PA6 MFC using different mixing protocols including simultaneous addition, application of pre‐made masterbatches with both constituents and their combinations. In all cases, majority of nanofiller (NF) was contained inside PA6 fibrils. On the other hand, fibrils dimensions were significantly affected by the clay addition protocol; their marked increase in the case of simultaneous addition of all components and application of HDPE/C30 nanocomposite indicate important effect of NF migration to the PA6 phase in the course of mixing and melt drawing. The effect of properties of PA6 and HDPE phases and NF migration on the morphology evolution is discussed. It is shown that the fiber shape and volume after sample drawing are controlled by the interplay between the dispersed fibril extension and coalescence. POLYM. ENG. The effects of different silica loadings and elastomeric content on interfacial properties, morphology and mechanical properties of polypropylene/silica 96/4 composites modified with 5, 10, 15, and 20 vol % of poly(styrene‐b‐ethylene‐co‐butylene‐b‐styrene) SEBS added to total composite volume were investigated. Four silica fillers differing in size (nano‐ vs. micro‐) and in surface properties (untreated vs. treated) were chosen as fillers. Elastomer SEBS was added as impact modifier and compatibilizer at the same time. The morphology of ternary polymer composites revealed by light and scanning electron microscopies was compared with morphology predicted models based on interfacial properties. The results indicated that general morphology of composite systems was determined primarily by interfacial properties, whereas the spherulitic morphology of polypropylene matrix was a result of two competitive effects: nucleation effect of filler and solidification effect of elastomer. Tensile and impact strength properties were mainly influenced by combined competetive effects of stiff filler and tough SEBS elastomer. Technical lignins are complex, irregular, polyphenolic compounds obtained in large quantities as by-products of the pulp and paper industries or according to current biorefinery setups. The availability of kraft lignin is increasing due to larger scale retrieval from process liquors, which opens new possibilities for further refining or new applications of such lignins. In the present study, sequential ultrafiltration of kraft lignin was performed to fractionate the lignin and to elucidate molar mass-dependent changes in lignin structure. Two industrial black liquors and three precipitated lignins were fractionated, and their functional groups were determined, providing molar mass-dependent profiles. Interrelations between structural parameters and functional groups, the molecular weight ranges, and the different lignin sources are discussed. This will help to establish structure-property-application relationships (SPARs) for technical lignins which are required for any future large-scale application.  相似文献

Kinetic Monte Carlo (KMC) has been widely used in the simulation of polymeric reactions. The power of KMC is highlighted by its ability to keep track of the length and sequence of every radical or polymer chain, while it is computationally more expensive than deterministic kinetic models. This paper introduces an acceleration method that significantly reduces the computational cost of KMC simulations, while keeping the same features as the full kinetic Monte Carlo simulations. Plants synthesize variable mixtures of herbivore-induced plant volatiles (HIPVs) as part of their evolutionary conserved defense. To elucidate the impact of chewing herbivores with different level of adaptation on HIPV profiles in rice, we measured HIPVs released from rice seedlings challenged by either the generalist herbivore Mythimna loreyi (MYL) or the specialist Parnara guttata (PAG). Both herbivores markedly elicited the emission of HIPVs, mainly on the second and third days after attack compared to control plants. In addition, side-by-side HIPV comparisons using MYL and PAG caterpillars revealed that generalist feeding induced comparably more HIPVs relative to specialist, particularly on day two as highlighted by multivariate analysis (PLS-DA) of emitted HIPVs, and further confirmed in mimicked herbivory experiments. Here, mechanically wounded plants treated with water (WW) released more VOCs than untreated controls, and on top of this, oral secretions (OS) from both herbivores showed differential effects on volatile emissions from the wounded plants. Similar to actual herbivory, MYL OS promoted higher amounts of HIPVs relative to PAG OS, thus supporting disparate induction of rice indirect defenses in response to generalist and specialist herbivores, which could be due to the differential composition of their OS. Abstract

Recently three methods for calculating the π-electron content of rings of benzenoid hydrocarbons were put forward: one based on the consideration of Kekuléstructural formulas, and the other two based on an analogous treatment of the Clar aromatic sextet formulas. These three methods are applied to the homologous series consisting of two condensed acene chains (whose first members are pyrene, anthanthrene, peri-naphthacenonaphthacene, …), leading to basically identical results. In contrast to acenes (in which the partition of π-electrons into rings is uniform), in the double-hexagonal-chain species the partition of π-electrons is highly non-uniform. The electron content monotonically decreases, in opposite directions, along the two acene chains, being maximal in the least annelated rings. Some other generally valid regularities in the π-electron properties of the double–hexagonal–chain benzenoids are also pointed out.  相似文献
