A discontinuous Galerkin finite-element method (DG-FEM) solution to a set of high-order Boussinesq-type equations for modelling
highly nonlinear and dispersive water waves in one horizontal dimension is presented. The continuous equations are discretized
using nodal polynomial basis functions of arbitrary order in space on each element of an unstructured computational domain.
A fourth-order explicit Runge-Kutta scheme is used to advance the solution in time. Methods for introducing artificial damping
to control mild nonlinear instabilities are also discussed. The accuracy and convergence of the model with both h (grid size) and p (order) refinement are confirmed for the linearized equations, and calculations are provided for two nonlinear test cases
in one horizontal dimension: harmonic generation over a submerged bar, and reflection of a steep solitary wave from a vertical
wall. Test cases for two horizontal dimensions will be considered in future work. 相似文献

The problem of analysing dynamically evolving textual data has arisen within the last few years. An example of such data is
the discussion appearing in Internet chat lines. In this Letter a recently introduced source separation method, termed as
complexity pursuit, is applied to the problem of finding topics in dynamical text and is compared against several blind separation algorithms
for the problem considered. Complexity pursuit is a generalisation of projection pursuit to time series and it is able to
use both higher-order statistical measures and temporal dependency information in separating the topics. Experimental results
on chat line and newsgroup data demonstrate that the minimum complexity time series indeed do correspond to meaningful topics
inherent in the dynamical text data, and also suggest the applicability of the method to query-based retrieval from a temporally
changing text stream.

Melatonin synthesis in retinal photoreceptors is stimulated at night by a circadian oscillator and suppressed acutely by light. To identify photoreceptor mechanisms involved in the acute suppression of melatonin synthesis, an action spectrum was measured for dark-adapted Xenopus laevis eyecups at night. Intensity-response curves at six wavelengths from 400 to 650 nm were parallel, suggesting that a single photopigment predominates in melatonin suppression. Half-saturating intensities at 400, 440, 480, and 533 nm were not significantly different from one another, at 1-2 x 10(8) quanta cm(-2) s(-1). Significantly higher intensities of 580- and 650-nm light were required for melatonin suppression. These results indicate a predominant role for the principal green-absorbing rods in acute regulation of retinal melatonin synthesis in response to light, and argue against an important role for the red-absorbing cones. Higher than expected sensitivity at short wavelengths suggests that photoreceptors sensitive to blue and/or violet light may also contribute to melatonin suppression. 相似文献

The performance of modern fibre-based or polycarbonate armour has significantly improved since their introduction, providing protection against a range of low- and high-velocity threats. While this is so, users of such armour frequently report of issues relating to their operational suitability resulting in impaired performance and physiological effects. Recently, researchers have focused on how naturally occurring protective mechanisms could be utilised to enhance the protective and operational performance of wearers of engineered body armour. The research presented within this paper therefore utilises a series of key design characteristics exhibited within naturally occurring elasmoid scale armour, coupled with established laser sintering manufacturing parameters, for the realisation and assessment of a scale-based stab-resistant armoured structure to internationally recognised test standards. 相似文献

The 2016 Eurocorr Meeting was held in Montpellier, France, from 12 to 15 September 2016. The focus of the meeting was Linking Science and Engineering. The meeting attracted over 1000 delegates from at least 53 countries with France, Germany, the UK and Japan providing around half the delegates between them. Over 400 oral presentations, more than 200 of which were full papers, and over 140 posters were presented during the sessions and workshops. Lung cancer continues to be a leading cause of death around the world. Staging of this disease is critically dependent upon the involvement or noninvolvement of the lymph nodes which drain the region of lung containing the lesion/tumor. Palpation, unenhanced CT, and lymph node excision (i.e., mediastinectomy) are currently used to ascertain the status of these regional draining lymph nodes. The work reported herein details the first efforts toward the pulmonary instillation of iodinated nanoparticles for contrast-enhanced CT of lung draining lymph nodes. The data reflect the impact of dose, time post instillation, and formulation (surfactant) upon the observed CT enhancement of the tracheobronchial lymph nodes of beagle dogs. In addition, initial safety is discussed with both macroscopic and microscopic observations. The results indicate that pulmonary instillation of small volumes of iodinated nanoparticles could be successfully used to aid staging of lung cancer by CT imaging. 相似文献

The four isomers of 4-aminopyrrolidine-2,4-dicarboxylate (APDC) were prepared and evaluated for their effects at glutamate receptors in vitro. (2R,4R)-APDC (2a), an aza analog of the nonselective mGluR agonist (1S,3R)-1-aminocyclopentane-1,3-dicarboxylate (1S,3R)-ACPD, 1), was found to possess relatively high affinity for metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGluRs) (ACPD-sensitive [3H]glutamate binding IC50 = 6.49 +/- 1.21 microM) with no effects on radioligand binding to NMDA, AMPA, or kainate receptors up to 100 microM. None of the other APDC isomers showed significant mGluR binding affinity, indicating that this interaction is highly stereospecific. Both 1 and 2a were effective in decreasing forskolin-stimulated cAMP formation in the adult rat cerebral cortex (EC50 = 8.17 +/- 2.21 microM for 1; EC50 = 14.51 +/- 5.54 microM for 2a); however, while 1 was also effective in stimulating basal tritiated inositol monophosphate production in the neonatal rat cerebral cortex (EC50 = 27.7 +/- 5.2 microM), 2a (up to 100 microM) was ineffective in stimulating phosphoinositide hydrolysis in this tissue preparation, further supporting our previous observations that 2a is a highly selective agonist for mGluRs negatively coupled to adenylate cyclase. Microelectrophoretic application of either 1 or 2a to intact rat spinal neurons produced an augmentation of AMPA-induced excitation (95 +/- 10% increase for 1, 52 +/- 6% increase for 2a). Intracerebral injection of 1 (400 nmol) produced characteristic limbic seizures in mice which are not mimicked by 2a (200-1600 nmol, ic). However, the limbic seizures induced by 1 were blocked by systemically administered 2a in a dose-dependent manner (EC50 = 271 mg/kg, ip). It is concluded that (2R,4R)-APDC (2a) is a highly selective, systemically-active agonist of mGluRs negatively coupled to adenylate cyclase and that selective activation of these receptors in vivo can result in anticonvulsant effects. 相似文献

Melatonin (N-acetyl-5-methoxytryptamine) is an evolutionary highly conserved molecule that plays an important role in conveying the clock and calendar information to all living organisms, including man. Melatonin is synthesized in the rhythmic fashion, primarily by the pineal gland, and, to a lesser degree, by extrapineal tissues-namely the retina, the Harderian gland, and the gastrointestinal tract. The rhythm of the hormone production, with maximal levels occurring at night in darkness, is generated by an endogenous circadian clock(s) and is synchronized with the photoperiodic environment to which animals are exposed. This brief outline surveys data on the regulation of rhythmic melatonin biosynthesis by a circadian pacemaker and light (full spectrum white light and monochromatic lights with wavelengths both in the visible and invisible range). Additionally, possible applications of this chronobiotic compound in agriculture and in medicine in the treatment of circadian rhythm sleep disorders are discussed. 相似文献
