An 80-Msample/s video switched-capacitor filter using a parallelbiquadratic structure

This paper describes a fifth-order, low-pass switched capacitor filter for video applications. It has a 4-MHz cutoff frequency and uses a parallel biquadratic structure with double sampling to achieve an 80-MHz input sampling rate in a 2-μm CMOS process. The prototype filter is fully differential, occupies an active area of 11 mm² , and dissipates 190 mW     

Early detection of ageing in solder joints through laser probe thermal analysis of the peltier effect

We have recently developed an optical contactless method for testing the quality of solder joints during accelerated thermal cycling ageing processes.¹ The method was based upon the measurement of the dynamic thermal behaviour of the joint to short bursts of Joule heating. It has proved to be efficient in revealing the formation of cracks at the lead-solder interface. We present a method to evaluate ageing at a much earlier stage in the cycling process. We have observed in earlier work,¹ that before cracks appear, structural changes occur in the solder at the lead-solder interface. The thermal response of the solder joint is recorded over time to a Peltier heat perturbation produced by flowing a current pulse through the interface where structural changes occur. The key point in this method is to discriminate the Peltier effect from the Joule thermal response because both effects generate heat. The variation of the early Peltier response in the thermal cycling ageing tests is seen as a quantitative signature of the structural changes in the lead-solder interface.     

Image compression using the 2-D wavelet transform

The 2-D orthogonal wavelet transform decomposes images into both spatial and spectrally local coefficients. The transformed coefficients were coded hierarchically and individually quantized in accordance with the local estimated noise sensitivity of the human visual system (HVS). The algorithm can be mapped easily onto VLSI. For the Miss America and Lena monochrome images, the technique gave high to acceptable quality reconstruction at compression ratios of 0.3-0.2 and 0.64-0.43 bits per pixel (bpp), respectively.     

Kalman decomposition for implicit linear systems

The Kalman decomposition for a general class of implicit systems is introduced and studied. The properties of strong reachability, observability, acceptance of all inputs and outer sequences, output-uniqueness, uniqueness, and trajectory observability of the original system are related to the properties of its subsystems obtained via the Kalman decomposition. The problems of transfer relation, regularizability by feedback, output feedback, and output injection are studied by means of this decomposition     

High-dose chemotherapy with carboplatin, etoposide and cyclophosphamide followed by a haematopoietic stem cell rescue in patients with high-risk retinoblastoma: a SFOP and SFGM study

This study investigates the role of high-dose chemotherapy with haematopoietic stem cell rescue as consolidation treatment in high-risk retinoblastoma (extraocular disease at diagnosis or relapse or invasion of cut end of optic nerve). 25 patients received high-dose chemotherapy including carboplatin (250 mg/m2/day from day 1 to day 5 for the 6 first patients and 350 mg/m2/day from day 1 to day 5 for the other patients), etoposide (350 mg/m2/day from day 1 to day 5) and cyclophosphamide (1.6 g/m2/day from day 2 to day 5) (CARBOPEC) followed by autologous haematopoietic stem cell rescue. 19 patients received this drug combination for chemosensitive extraocular relapse. The other 6 patients with histological high-risk factors were given this treatment as consolidation after enucleation and conventional chemotherapy. The three year disease-free survival was 67.1%. In 7 of the 9 relapsing patients, the first site of relapse was the central nervous system. All patients with central nervous system disease died except one. The main toxicity was haematological and digestive (mucositis and diarrhoea). 2 of the 13 evaluable patients had grade III and IV ototoxicity. One patient experienced an acute grade I reversible cardiotoxicity. The CARBOPEC regimen seems to be a promising therapeutic strategy in patients with high-risk retinoblastoma, especially those with bone and/or bone marrow involvement. This treatment did not improve the outcome of patients with central nervous system disease.     

The differential regulation and secretion of proteinases from fetal and neonatal fibroblasts by growth factors

Until recently, research on the pathogenesis of glomerulonephritis has been mainly focused on the characterization of humoral immune responses in the initiation of glomerular injury. However, there is a growing recognition that both cellular and humoral immune responses, in varying proportions, are involved in the pathogenesis of immunologically-mediated glomerulonephritis. T lymphocytes are essential cellular elements of cell-mediated immunity. Both in experimental models of immune-mediated renal disease and in histopathological analyses of human nephropathies, the involvement of T cells has been demonstrated in the immunoregulation of nephritogenic immune responses and in the immune injury in the kidney. T cell activation resulting in either delayed-type hypersensitivity, cytolytic reactions, abnormal expression of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) molecules, or B cell activation can result in glomerulonephritis. These different types of responses are exerted by distinct T cell subsets defined by cell surface markers and cytokine profiles. CD4+ T cells in vivo are functionally heterogeneous with respect to cytokine production and the CD45 isoforms that are found on their surface. Like CD4+ T cells, CD8+ T cells may also be heterogeneous at the level of cytokine production. The roles of CD4+ and CD8+ cells and their cytokine profiles in glomerulonephritis have not been extensively investigated yet, but such studies might improve the understanding of the pathogenesis and possibly lead to new therapeutic approaches of human glomerulonephritis. In this review the role of distinct T lymphocyte subsets in experimental and human glomerulonephritis will be discussed.     

Cars, phones, and Tamagotchi tribes

As if life isn't already crowded enough with obligations, “Tamagotchis” (virtual pets) would seem to be at odds with the Information Age, but cars, phones and TV-like appliances will become more like Tamagotchis as the friction-free economy once again expresses itself in tribalism. My premise is simple: the friction-free economy rewards retro-cultures that yearn to return to agrarian tribalism. Selling hi-tech products in this new economy becomes ritual, and the greater the ritual, the greater the financial rewards. Some may use different names-database marketing, targeting or niche marketing-but the key to expanding the computer industry will be to build a tribe around your brand and flaunt it. Successful product design and sales will increasingly require targeting products, services and ideas to various tribes. An idea long understood in the entertainment and services industry, this is only now becoming a computer industry mantra. The question is, how will this impact the design of future computer products? A mixed-signal RAM decision-feedback equalizer for disk drives

A mixed-signal RAM decision-feedback equalizer (DFE) that operates at 90 Mb/s is described. In the analog domain, the DFE subtracts intersymbol interference caused by the past four outputs. The equalized signal is fed into a nonuniform flash analog-to-digital converter (ADC) to produce the decision output and error signal used to adapt the RAM contents in the digital domain. With a 5 V supply voltage, the power dissipation is 260 mW during steady-state operation. The active area is 4.5 mm² in a 1 μm CMOS process
