Mycotoxicosis in chicks produced by toxins from Phomopsis sp. or Diaporthe phaseolorum var. sojae

The possibility of producing toxic effects in day-old chicks with mycotoxins from Phomopsis sp. or Diaporthe phaseolorum var. sojae isolates was studied. Evidence was found that Phomopsis sp., but not Diaporthe, produces hepatic necrosis with high mortality in chicks. Enzymatically, the hepatotoxin produced by Phomopsis sp. caused an increase in the level of liver glucose-6-P dehydrogenase. Mycotoxicosis caused by Phomopsis sp. was compared with lupinosis.     

Mixing and demixing of microdose quantities of sodium salicylate in a direct compression vehicle

The rate and degree of mixing of microdose quantities of sodium salicylate with a direct compression vehicle was similar for both ordered and random mechanisms of mixing. However, the random mix, in contrast to the ordered mix, showed significant segregation under demixing conditions. A study of the effect of sodium salicylate concentrations on ordered mixing homogeneity demonstrated that concentrations which oversaturated the surface adsorption sites on the direct compression vehicle resulted in unsatisfactory mixes with a high degree of non-uniformity.     

Leaky modes in graded fibres

Leaky modes, particularly tunnelling leaky modes, in step-index fibres are well known, but they are also present in graded fibres, in which case they are much more likely to cause errors in calculations and measurements, for example, transmission measurements, since they cannot be distinguished by any simple means from bound modes. The possible and probable extent of their effects are calculated by simple mode theory.     

The effect of sorbed penetrants on the aging of previously dilated glassy polymer powders. II. n-propane sorption in polystyrene

Both the rate and apparent equilibrium of propane sorption in glassy polystyrene were increased after swelling the polymer by exposure to a highly sorbing vapor. Cyclic sorption experiments revealed that the increase in rate and apparent equilibrium of sorption due to the preswelling treatment decayed only during vacuum aging. The presence of low levels of propane in the polymer during aging, however, appeared to arrest the decay in sorption capacity. These composite results, taken in conjunction with the results of previous work in our laboratory, suggest that the component of the total sorption which resides in nonequilibrium, distended interchain gaps retards the chain motions which otherwise lead to consolidation of the dilated glass.     

Urinary fistulas: vaginal repair using a labial fat pad

A technique is recommended to repair urinary fistulas vaginally using a pedicle of labial fat to separate the urothelial and vaginal layers. The technique was used in 6 patients with vesicovaginal and 4 patients with urethrovaginal fistulas. Anatomic results were successful in all cases and stress incontinence was cured in all patients who had this coexistent condition.     

ISDMS—a scientific data management system

This paper describes the design and development of the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory Scientific Data Mangement System (ISDMS). The ISDMS is an integrated system providing organization, processing, control and retrieval of scientific time series data in a large laboratory environment using Control Data Corporation (CDC) computers. Data reformatting, graphics, data manipulation, data management, engineering analysis and general utility functions are offered to engineers, scientists, and other end users. The ISDMS usage has grown steadily since its first release into production status in early 1979. The current configuration is well received by the user community and meets most requirements for studying and analysing data in a scientific environment.
