An extension of the so-called committee problem is discussed in terms of the occupancy of a certain matrix whose row totals are taken as fixed, and whose cell entries are constrained to lie between zero and defined maxima. A statistic is constructed as a function of the column totals and used to test the significance of a column effect, irrespective of row differences. Two special cases when the cell maxima are constant, first within rows and second within columns, yield a covariance matrix for the column totals whose inverse may be found explicitly, and this in turn leads to a relatively simple expression for the test statistic. Applications of this generalized problem to certain health research situations are discussed, and the adequacy of a X2 approximation to the statistic's null distribution is mentioned. 相似文献

Substantial strain differences in tonic immobility were found between different breeds of chickens. Crossbreeding between strains showing different immobility durations yielded hybrids that exhibited intermediate reactions. For purpose of relating the strain differences in tonic immobility to more conventional measures of emotionality, data were collected on open-field activity, defecation, and adrenal weight. Overall, the results implicated strain-specific differences in emotionality as being the basis for the observed differences in immobility. Latency to defecate in an open field, however, was highly correlated with latency to ambulate. It was argued that defecation, rather than being an absolute measure of fear or emotionality, may in fact be an intermediate response to gradual fear reduction. 相似文献

The validation of otological care in the previous quarter century has been based, by and large, on short-term follow-up information. The rapid variation in procedures introduced during this period indicates that there may be need for further consideration. Analyses based on relatively short duration have led the "acceptance" of a variety of diagnostic and treatment methods which have proven disappointing in some cases. To help avoid this invalid "acceptance," a review of patients with significant follow-up may result in a more critical evaluation of future procedural changes. This presentation will be in four parts: 1. History of the office structure. 2. Discussion of five long-term patients that illustrates and supports certain otological concepts. 3. Sodium nitroprusside is a potent, effective, and readily reversible direct vasodilating agent. It is broken down by hemoglobin into cyanide, which is in part detoxified by liver and kidney to thiocyanate. Some cyanide, especially in nitroprusside- "resistant" individuals who need large amounts of the drug, appears to remain free to cause cyanide poisoning. Patients requiring inordinate amounts probably should not continue to receive the drug, although maximum dosage limits for long-term therapy are not established. Blood thiocyanate levels do not indicate the extent to which free cyanide is limiting oxygen utilization in essential tissue, nor do blood cyanide levels. Metabolic acidosis, elevated lactate levels, elevated lactate/pyruvate ratios, and elevated mixed venous blood oxygen content are at present the best indications of the presence of cyanide poisoning during nitroprusside administration. Nitroprusside appears useful for induction of hypotension during surgery, and for treatment of hypertensive emergencies from all causes, although continuance for more than a few days is probably unwise. The reductions of cardiac afterload and ventricular filling pressure by nitroprusside appear useful in treatment of severe myocardial failure or infarction, but studies of myocardial cyanide toxicity are needed before complete acceptance of this therapy is warranted. Initial dose rates between 0.5 and 1.5 mug/kg/min are recommended only as starting points for very careful titration. Total projected intra-operative dosage should be calculated as quickly as possible and should not exceed 3-3.5 mg/kg. It is hoped that future studies will reveal the maximum dose of nitroprusside that can safely be metabolized in a 24-hour period, and may indicate that cofactors of rhodanase such as thiosulfate, or cobalamins such as hydroxocobalamin, can be administered with nitroprusside to prevent cyanide poisoning. 相似文献

An investigation of the microstrain behavior of an age-hardenable, ferritic Fe-Si-Ti alloy has been made with the aim of characterizing
the deformation processes in the early stages of yielding. In the solution-treated condition the value of the elastic limit
obtained of 268 MN/m2 after 1 pct prestrain is comparable with published values for Fe-Si alloys. In the aged conditions mechanical hysteresis
was detected with zero prestrain and this is attributed to the restoring force on glide dislocations produced by antiphase
boundaries in sheared particles. Both the elastic and anelastic limits are strongly dependent on the state of precipitation.
In the prepeak and peak aged conditions the anelastic limit exhibits an extremely high dependence on strain. This is attributed
to glide dislocations encountering areas of the particle array which are more difficult to penetrate and to the rapidly growing
back stress due to dislocation accumulation in the well defined slip bands which are characteristic of deformation of this

The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of ferulic acid (1, 10, 20 and 25 mM) at different water activity (aw) values (0.99, 0.98, 0.96 and 0.93) at 25 °C on growth and fumonisin production by Fusarium verticillioides and Fusarium proliferatum on maize based media. For both Fusarium species, the lag phase significantly decreased (p ≤ 0.001), and the growth rates increased (p ≤ 0.001) at the lowest ferulic acid concentration used (1 mM), regardless of the aw. However, high doses of ferulic acid (10 to 25 mM) significantly reduced (p ≤ 0.001) the growth rate of both Fusarium species, regardless of the aw. In general, growth rate inhibition increased as ferulic acid doses increased and as media aw decreased. Fumonisin production profiles of both Fusarium species showed that low ferulic acid concentrations (1–10 mM) significantly increased (p ≤ 0.001) toxin production, regardless of the aw. High doses of ferulic acid (20–25 mM) reduced fumonisin production, in comparison with the controls, by both Fusarium species but they were not statistically significant in most cases. The results show that the use of ferulic acid as a post-harvest strategy to reduce mycotoxin accumulation on maize needs to be discussed. 相似文献

An unknown red dye was discovered in a sumac spice sample during routine analysis for Sudan dyes. LC-DAD and LC-MS/MS did not reveal the identity of the red substance. Nevertheless, using LC-high-resolution MS and isotope ratio comparisons the structure was identified as Basic Red 46. The identity of the dye was further confirmed by comparison with a commercial hair-staining product and two textile dye formulations containing Basic Red 46. Analogous to the Sudan dyes, Basic Red 46 is an azo dye. However, some of the sample clean-up methodology utilised for the analysis of Sudan dyes in food prevents its successful detection. In contrast to the Sudan dyes, Basic Red 46 is a cation. Its cationic properties make it bind strongly to gel permeation columns and silica solid-phase extraction cartridges and prevent elution with standard eluents. This is the first report of Basic Red 46 in food. The structure elucidation of this compound as well as the disadvantages of analytical methods focusing on a narrow group of targeted analytes are discussed. 相似文献
