OBJECTIVES: Population-based data on body mass index for developing countries are scarce. Body mass index data from two Brazilian surveys were examined to determine regional and temporal variations in the prevalences of underweight, overweight, and obesity. METHODS: Nationwide surveys in 1974/75 and 1989 collected anthropometric data in Brazil from 55,000 and 14,455 households, respectively. Trained interviewers used the same methods to measure weight and stature in both surveys, and survey designs were identical. Prevalences of underweight, overweight, and obesity were determined for persons 18 years of age and older. RESULTS: In the 1989 survey, body mass index varied greatly according to region of the country, urbanization, and income. In the wealthier South, the prevalence of overweight/obesity was the highest and the prevalence of underweight was the lowest; in the poorer rural Northeast, these patterns were reversed. For both surveys, overweight/obesity was more common among women than among men and peaked at age 45 to 64 years in both sexes. Over the 15 years between surveys, the prevalence of both overweight and obesity increased strikingly. CONCLUSIONS: In contrast to findings in developed countries, obesity in Brazil was positively associated with income and was much more prevalent among women than among men. For Brazilian women, the overall prevalence of overweight was nearly as high as that among women in the United States.  相似文献

Microbial phosphatases are known or suspected to play a role in the pathogenesis of several intracellular pathogens, including Legionella micdadei. Legionella pneumophila also possess phosphatase activities, but their possible roles in cellular infection are unknown. We generated mutants of a serogroup 1 isolate of L. pneumophila that lack the major phosphatase. Isolation of a Pho- mutant after random mutagenesis with transposon MudII4041 allowed us to dissociate the major alkaline phosphatase (pH optimum approximately 8) from a minor acid phosphatase activity. Both activities were concentrated in the bacterial periplasm. The gene encoding the major alkaline phosphatase (pho) was cloned by expression in E. coli and used to generate a site directed mutation in two L. pneumophila strains. Each parent-mutant pair was compared in a U937 cell tissue culture assay for capacity to infect, lyse, and grow within mammalian cells. Although the parental stains differed in their U937 cell cytopathicity, neither was significantly more infective than its Pho- derivative, suggesting that the alkaline phosphatase activity is not essential for cellular infection. Because they are not attenuated, Pho- mutants can be used to generate gene fusions with E. coli alkaline phosphatase to study and secretion and cellular infectivity in L. pneumophila.  相似文献

The effect of pH on the bleeding of FD&C yellow No. 5 aluminum lake and FD&C red No. 40 aluminum lake was investigated. The pH-bleeding profiles corresponded to the pH-solubility profile of aluminum hydroxide. The similarity of the bleeding profiles of both lake dyes and the pH-solubility profile of aluminum hydroxide indicates that pH related bleeding, other than that occurring by competition with anions, is a result of dissolution of the aluminum hydroxide substrate. This dissolution is related to the properties of the substrate rather than to the structure of adsorbed dye.  相似文献

To determine whether the calcium channel blocker amlodipine improves glucose tolerance and alters serum adrenal androgen and glucocorticoid levels in insulin-resistant men, 24 obese and hypertensive men were enrolled into a single blind, placebo-controlled study. An amlodipine group (n = 12) and a placebo group (n = 12) were studied before and after treatment with either amlodipine (5 mg) or placebo capsule twice daily for 7 days by determining serum insulin, glucose, dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEA-S), androstenedione, and cortisol in the fasting state and during an oral glucose tolerance test. Amlodipine treatment 1) lowered fasting serum insulin (from 273 +/- 19 to 200 +/- 17 pmol/L; P < 0.0005) and glucose (from 5.4 +/- 0.1 to 5.1 +/- 0.1 mmol/L; P < 0.02), 2) reduced the area under the curve for glucose (from 1342 +/- 25 to 1198 +/- 23 mmol/L.min; P = 0.0001) and the area under the curve for insulin (from 155.5 +/- 7.8 to 103.9 +/- 4.3 nmol/L.min; P = 0.0001) during the oral glucose tolerance test, 3) increased fasting serum DHEA-S (from 5.19 +/- 0.37 to 7.95 +/- 0.58 mumol/L; P = 0.0001) and androstenedione (from 5.65 +/- 0.65 to 6.83 +/- 0.53 nmol/L; P < 0.01), and 4) decreased fasting serum cortisol (from 538 +/- 35 to 494 +/- 26 nmol/L; P < 0.05). Fasting serum androstenedione declined slightly in the placebo group (from 5.96 +/- 0.60 to 5.74 +/- 0.57 nmol/L; P < 0.005), but no change occurred in glucose tolerance, fasting serum DHEA-S, or cortisol. We conclude that amlodipine treatment improves glucose tolerance, reduces fasting and glucose-stimulated serum insulin levels, increases serum DHEA-S and androstenedione levels, and decreases circulating cortisol.  相似文献

Partial liquid ventilation using conventional ventilatory schemes improves lung function in animal models of respiratory failure. We examined the feasibility of high-frequency partial liquid ventilation in the preterm lamb with respiratory distress syndrome and evaluated its effect on pulmonary and systemic hemodynamics. Seventeen lambs were studied in three groups: high-frequency gas ventilation (Gas group), high-frequency partial liquid ventilation (Liquid group), and high-frequency partial liquid ventilation with hypoxia-hypercarbia (Liquid-Hypoxia group). High-frequency partial liquid ventilation increased oxygenation compared with high-frequency gas ventilation over 5 h (arterial oxygen tension 253 +/- 21.3 vs. 17 +/- 1.8 Torr; P < 0.001). Pulmonary vascular resistance decreased 78% (P < 0.001), pulmonary blood flow increased fivefold (P < 0.001), and aortic pressure was maintained (P < 0.01) in the Liquid group, in contrast to progressive hypoxemia, hypercarbia, and shock in the Gas group. Central venous pressure did not change. The Liquid-Hypoxia group was similar to the Gas group. We conclude that high-frequency partial liquid ventilation improves gas exchange and stabilizes pulmonary and systemic hemodynamics compared with high-frequency gas ventilation. The stabilization appears to be due in large part to improvement in gas exchange.  相似文献

A series of 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinoline-2,3,4-trione 3-oximes (QTOs) was synthesized and evaluated for antagonism of NMDA receptor glycine site. Glycine site affinity was determined using a [3H]DCKA binding assay in rat brain membranes and electrophysiologically in Xenopus oocytes expressing 1a/2C subunits of cloned rat NMDA receptors. Selected compounds were also assayed for antagonism of AMPA receptors in Xenopus oocytes expressing rat brain poly-(A)+RNA. QTOs were prepared by nitrosation of 2,4-quinolinediols. Structure-activity studies indicated that substitutions in the 5-, 6-, and 7-positions increase potency, whereas substitution in the 8-position causes a decrease in potency. Among the derivatives evaluated, 5,6,7-trichloro-QTO was the most potent antagonist with an IC50 of 7 nM in the [3H]DCKA binding assay and a Kb of 1-2 nM for NMDA receptors expressed in Xenopus oocytes. 5,6,7-Trichloro-QTO also had a Kb of 180 nM for AMPA receptors in electrophysiological assays. The SAR of QTOs was compared with the SAR of 1,4-dihydroquinoxaline-2,3-diones (QXs). For compounds with the same benzene ring substitution pattern, QTOs were generally 5-10 times more potent than the corresponding QXs. QTOs represent a new class of inhibitors of the NMDA receptor which, when appropriately substituted, are among the most potent glycine site antagonists known.  相似文献
