Venous hum of the Cruveilhier-Baumgarten syndrome: response to the Valsalva maneuver

The response of the venous hum of the Cruveilhier-Baumgarten syndrome (CBS) to respiration, the cardiac cycle, and changes in posture is not predictable. The Valsalva maneuver may result in an increase in intensity of the hum rather than a decrease. The Cruveilhier-Baumgarten venous hum (CBH) is virtually diagnostic of portal vein hypertension. It may be mistaken for obscure cardiac murmurs. The Cruveilhier-Baumgarten venous hum, unlike the cervical venous hum (CVH), is never present in normal people.     

The clair data system

The CLAIR data system consists of a series of FORTRAN IV programs and subroutines designed for the storage, retrieval, and processing of numeric and nonnumeric data. The CLAIR system in use at the University of Melbourne, in addition to the basic programs and subroutines, has a strong petrological bias, however, this reflects the interests of users and not restrictions on the CLAIR system. The types of programs and subroutines in the current CLAIR system are discussed briefly and, being on an UPDATE library, the system can be made available for use on a number of different computers. As a result of 3 years of use at the University of Melbourne, CLAIR has proved an extremely powerful system in the hands of a competent programmer, whereas in the hands of a student with little programming knowledge, it is an easily operated system.     

Efficient solution of large moments problems: Theory and small problem results

A banded matrix iterative solution method for linear simultaneous equations arising from thin wire moments problems has been applied to a variety of multiple wire configurations. Compared to Gaussian elimination, solution efficiencies around 5 to 10 and up to 23 have been obtained for problems with 100 unknowns for a solution accuracy of 1 percent. Greater efficiencies are obtained for less accurate solutions. Reasonable far-field patterns are found from currents with 30 percent error. The method is intended for large problems, for which good efficiencies are expected. Application of the method requires some expertise at the current stage of development.     

Drug abusers on the job

Drug abusers in the working population range from the functional to the dysfunctional. Functional drug-abusing employees may work as productive members of a company for years without incident or detection. Cases have been documented of long-term heroin addicts with stable 10- and 20-year work histories., Studies of drug addicts in treatment with known work histories reveal that such persons can, and do, hold a broad range of jobs in the work force. In a study by Levy of 95 former addicts with histories of simultaneous employment and undetected drug abuse (including on-the-job use by 91 of the 95 addicts), the following occupations were found: bank teller; mail clerk; secretary; delivery man; stock clerk; college registrar; typist; baker; nurses aide; medical supply clerk; messenger; pharmacy clerk; receptionist; teletype operator; men's clothing salesman; truck driver; busboy; telephone installer; roofer; clothing designer; assembly line worker; waitress; auto mechanic; security officer; postal worker; credit collector; plant manager; and rigger. Reports from CODAP, a Federal statistical system covering drug treatment programs, indicate that about 20% of opiate users admitted to treatment were employed full time at the time of admission. Caplovitz found that the stable worker-addict is more similar in basic characteristics to other workers than to nonworking addicts.     

Polarographic determination of robenidine residues in chicken tissues, eggs, litter, soil, and plant tissue

Polarographic residue methods have been developed for determining robenidine (Robenz), 1,3-bis[p-chlorobenzylidene)amino]-guanidine monohydrochloride, in chicken tissues, eggs, litter, soil, and plants. The compound is extracted from chicken fat, skin, muscle, liver, and eggs with ethyl acetate; from blood with acetone; from plant tissue, litter, and kidney with acidic acetone; and from soil with basic methanol. After extraction by high-speed blending or overnight shaking, the extract is cleaned up by evaporation, solvent partition and/or elution from CG-50 ion exchange resin. Robenidine is quantitated by differential cathode ray polarography, using acidic aqueous methanol or acetic acid (1+1) supporting electrolyte. Recoveries ranged from 64 to 125% with an average overall recovery of 90%. The validated sensitivity is 0.1 ppm for chicken tissues, soil, and plants, 0.01 ppm for eggs, and 1 ppm for litter.
