Steam (physical) refining deodorizer for malaysian palm oil

The production of Malaysian palm oil is expected to increase 20% per year for the next 5 yr. Already planted are more than a million acres which will start to produce in the next few years. Recent plantings of new strains will produce 2400 to 3000 lb of palm oil per acre. Palmex Industries, Penang, Malaysia started in operation in August, 1975, a physical refining system to produce a deodorized palm oil with 0.03% free fatty acid (FFA) from crude palm oil containing 5.0% FFA. Production records confirm the feasibility of physical refining crude palm oil in Malaysia, ex-porting the oil to the United States, and producing a quality product with a minimum of additional pro-cessing.     

Overcontrolled hostility among men found not guilty by reason of insanity.

Obtained MMPI overcontrolled hostility (OH) scores from 69 men held in a maximum security psychiatric institution after being found not guilty by reason of insanity, and from 60 men from a minimum security psychiatric hospital. An average of 39 mo after the original testing, OH scores were obtained from 55 of the maximum security patients. Results show that the maximum security patients had higher OH scores than those in minimum security and their OH scores increased over time. As the men who had been found not guilty by reason of insanity typically committed serious crimes against persons and were unlikely to have previous criminal histories, additional validity is provided for the OH dimension. It is noted that the increase in the maximum security patients' OH scores over time has important implications for prerelease psychological assessments of dangerousness. The nutritional significance of inborn errors of amino acid metabolism

Inborn errors of metabolism affect the metabolism of 7 out of 8 essential amino acids and a number of non-essential ones. Dietary treatment has been applied with varying success. The wide variations in the severity of symptoms in this group of diseases are discussed. Dietary treatment opens the possibility to collect information about the minimal requirements of most essential amino acids. These requirements are likely to be still lower than those mentioned in the WHO Report No. 522, 1976. Children who for years have lived on one of these restricted diets, provide the possibility to compare the effect of such a diet on their nutritional status with that of children living on a normal diet.     

Color Phenomena Associated With Energy Transfer in Afterglows and Atomic Flames

Reactions involving reactive species produced in electric discharges are frequently characterized by the emission of visible light of many different colors. Some typical afterglows and atomic flames have been photographed, and the observed colors (or spectral distributions) are discussed with regard to the reactions from which they arise. Laboratory studies of this sort are helpful for the understanding of the energy transfer processes which occur in flames, in electrical discharges, and in the upper atmosphere.     

Oxygen tension of the skin of ischemic legs

Using a Kontron Roche Transcutaneous Oxygen Monitor, we measured oxygen tension on the skin of the legs at three sites in patients with peripheral vascular disease and group of controls. Significant decreases in oxygen tension occurred in the patient groups, which correlated well with ankle systolic pressure, with differences between those with claudication and those with rest pain. These results suggest that in limbs with claudication, significant skin hypoxia may exist during rest in spite of reportedly normal skin and muscle blood flow. The progressive decrease in skin oxygen tension down a limb with occlusive vascular disease may play a significant role in skin healing.     

Measured bounds on rain-scatter coupling between space-earth radio paths

Attempts were made to measure rain-scatter coupling for two satellite paths displaced in angle by0.85deg. For rain attenuation up to 15 dB, upper bounds on coupling were -40 dB at 19 GHz and -45 dB at 28 GHz. These experimental bounds are limited by antenna sidelobe levels which are on the order of 20 dB greater than theoretical rain-scatter predictions.
