A wide range assessment of the possible bioeffects of an acute exposure to high peak power ultra-wide band (UWB) electromagnetic radiation was performed in rats. The UWB-exposure consisted of 2 min of pulsed (frequency: 60 Hz, pulse width: 5-10 ns) UWB (bandwidth: 0.25-2.50 GHz) electromagnetic radiation. Rats were examined using one of the following: 1) a functional observational battery (FOB); 2) a swimming performance test; 3) a complete panel of blood chemistries; or 4) determination of the expression of the c-fos protein in immunohistologically-stained sections of the brain. In this study we assessed the accuracy of the General Health Questionnaire in detecting psychiatric disorders in general medical out-patients. A total of 290 newly referred patients were interviewed with the Present State Examination. Prior to the interview, 112 patients completed the full GHQ-60, 100 completed the GHQ-30 and 78 completed the GHQ-12. Data from the first group were used to study the full GHQ-60, together with the GHQ-30 and and GHQ-12, when disembedded from the full questionnaire. In a comparison between the disembedded and the separate versions of the GHQ-30 and GHQ-12 we observed considerable variation in the cut-off scores where a certain sensitivity and specificity was attained. In ROC-analysis, the versions were not materially different in their discriminatory capacity (area under the curve). The use of different criteria to define a 'case' demonstrated that case severity was another source of increasing cut-off scores. Our data demonstrate that the use of disembedded or separate versions of the questionnaire, together with variation in the case criteria can be a major explanation for variation in cut-off scores that was observed in previous studies. 相似文献

The quasi-steady state optimization of a single tubular fixed bed reactor with a slowly decaying catalyst is considered. The optimal choice of temperature T(z, t) distributed in both the space of the reactor and in chronological time is sought so as to maximize the total amount of reaction in a fixed given period of time. A single irreversible reaction is considered with a rate expressible as a product of separate functions of temperature, activity and conversion. The rate of catalyst decay is also a product of separate functions of temperature and activity but independent of conversion. Upper and lower bounds are placed on the permitted temperature. Theoretical characterization of the optimal policy is obtained using Sirazetdinov and Degtyarev's maximum principle derived for first-order partial differential equations and the influence of the ratio of reaction activation energy to catalyst deactivation energy on the derived optimal policy is indicated. Forty-nine term infants were prospectively shown to have hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE). All infants survived the neonatal period, and all but two infants (seen at 12 months) were followed up to at least 27 months of age. Factors that significantly correlated with outcome included the Sarnat encephalopathy stage and the occurrence of intractable seizures not controlled by phenobarbital sodium alone. There was no association between the one- or five-minute Apgar score, the need for early ventilation, the EEG, the occurrence of seizures, and the subsequent outcome. There was no significant difference in outcome for those infants who received dexamethasone sodium phosphate (n = 29) v those who did not receive the drug (n = 20). A review of 97 term infants with HIE from a regional perinatal program during a one-year period (1979), including 35 of the 49 infants in the present study, did show a significant increase in morbidity and mortality for transported infants. 相似文献

Influence of dietary Ca on Se metabolism was studied with 16 intact male Holstein calves averaging 86 kg. Calves were assigned randomly and fed one of four diets containing, .17, .67, 1.31, and 2.35% Ca at 3% of their body weight for 4 wk. The diets contained .062 ppm Se and .34% P. Four days prior to the end of the experiment, calves were dosed orally with radioactive 75Se. Dietary Ca had no significant effect on 75Se absorption. There was a slight curvilinear relationship between apparent 75Se absorption and dietary Ca intakes. Urinary excretion of 75Se and stable Se tended to decrease with increasing dietary Ca, but differences were not significant. No significant differences were found in concentration of 75Se in several tissues. Kidney and liver had the highest concentration with that in kidney being about four times that of liver. Apparent 75Se absorption was decreased 10 to 6%, respectively, in calves fed extremely low and high amounts of Ca, compared with those receiving the requirement (.67% Ca). These small reductions along with a small R2 suggest that dietary Ca probably is of little practical importance relative to Se metabolism in calves. 相似文献

Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) are promising candidates in regenerative cell‐therapies. However, optimizing their number and route of delivery remains a critical issue, which can be addressed by monitoring the MSCs’ bio‐distribution in vivo using super‐paramagnetic iron‐oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs). In this study, amino‐polyvinyl alcohol coated (A‐PVA) SPIONs are introduced for cell‐labeling and visualization by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of human MSCs. Size and surface charge of A‐PVA‐SPIONs differ depending on their solvent. Under MSC‐labeling conditions, A‐PVA‐SPIONs have a hydrodynamic diameter of 42 ± 2 nm and a negative Zeta potential of 25 ± 5 mV, which enable efficient internalization by MSCs without the need to use transfection agents. Transmission X‐ray microscopy localizes A‐PVA‐SPIONs in intracellular vesicles and as cytosolic single particles. After identifying non‐interfering cell‐assays and determining the delivered and cellular dose, in addition to the administered dose, A‐PVA‐SPIONs are found to be non‐toxic to MSCs and non‐destructive towards their multi‐lineage differentiation potential. Surprisingly, MSC migration is increased. In MRI, A‐PVA‐SPION‐labeled MSCs are successfully visualized in vitro and in vivo. In conclusion, A‐PVA‐SPIONs have no unfavorable influences on MSCs, although it becomes evident how sensitive their functional behavior is towards SPION‐labeling. Increasing the understanding of the electronic properties of gallium (Ga) in silicon (Si) used nowadays to manufacture p-type Si solar cells is of key technological importance. In this contribution, the results of the effect of Ga concentration on the low-temperature photoluminescence (PL) spectra in crystalline Si are reported. The Ga-doped Si samples studied have negligible boron concentrations, which can complicate spectral analysis of the bound exciton (BE) lines. The split Ga BE ground state at T = 10 K is analyzed and the PL intensity ratios for the BE to free exciton peaks are compared. By comparing these to known Ga concentrations, derived from capacitance–voltage measurements, an all-optical (PL) calibration curve for the quantification of Ga concentration in Si is established. The effects of both temperature and excitation power on the PL intensity ratios are also studied. By combining the temperature-induced changes in the PL intensity ratios with the calibration curve at 10 K, a calibration function has been determined. It is found that the decay rates of the PL intensity ratios as a function of excitation power are independent of the chosen (split) BE peak. The major benefits of this method and its limitations are discussed. 相似文献
