Ecological and physiological effects of the sulphate-reducing bacterium (SRB) Desulfovibrio desulfuricans on other intestinal organisms were investigated in anaerobic chemostats (dilution rate approximately 0.2 h-1). Reproducible defined bacterial communities were used in these experiments, comprising 14 different saccharolytic and amino acid fermenting species: Bifidobacterium longum, Bif. adolescentis, Bif. pseudolongum, Bif. infantis, Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron, Bact. vulgatus, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Enterococcus faecalis, Ent. faecium, Escherichia coli, Clostridium perfringens, Cl. butyricum, Cl. innocuum, Cl. bifermentans. Lactobacillus and Cl. bifermentans populations never rose above minimum detection limits (log10 2.0 and 4.0, respectively) under the experimental conditions employed in these studies. Inclusion of Des. desulfuricans in bacterial cultures (c. log10 8.4 viable cells ml-1) resulted in marked reductions (i.e. greater than 1 log) in planktonic cell population densities of several species, particularly Bif. longum, Cl. perfringens and Bif. pseudolongum. The two bacteroides species were unaffected by Des. desulfuricans, while numbers of Cl. butyricum increased. Extensive wall growth developed in the SRB culture, consisting mainly of Des. desulfuricans (log10 9.2 viable cells ml-1), Bact. thetaiotaomicron and Bact. vulgatus, with lesser numbers of facultative anaerobes, Cl. perfringens and Bif. longum. Wall growth was associated with a reduction in planktonic cell mass and increased acid production by the cultures. Chemotaxonomic study of chemostat microbiotas, on the basis of cellular fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) analyses, showed the existence of characteristic bacteroides (C15) and bifidobacterial (C18) markers, but desulfovibrio markers (i-C15:0, C16:0, i-C17:1) could be identified. The metabolic activities of saccharolytic organisms were altered in the SRB chemostat, including synthesis of a number of hydrolytic enzymes involved in carbohydrate breakdown, such as alpha-galactosidase, alpha-glucosidase and beta-galactosidase, together with several mucinolytic enzymes. High concentrations of sulphide (8.2 mmol 1-1) were detected in the SRB chemostat, suggesting that this metabolite may have been inhibitory to some species. Saccharolytic organisms growing in the SRB fermenter utilized more starch, but less galactose-containing polymers, which correlated with the observed glycosidase activities. Profound differences were also recorded with respect to fermentation product formation in the chemostats, where a major switch to acetate production occurred in the SRB culture, with concomitant reductions in propionate, butyrate and lactate, which is an important electron donor for desulfovibrios.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: The incidence of intrathyroidal parathyroid glands remains controversial. The purpose of this study was to determine the incidence in a series of patients with hyperparathyroidism. METHODS: Three hundred nine patients underwent parathyroidectomy. Patients were divided into two groups: uniglandular disease versus hyperplasia. RESULTS: Eighteen of 309 patients (6%) had abnormal intrathyroidal parathyroid glands. The incidence was 3% (7 of 222) in patients with uniglandular disease versus 15% (11 of 73) in those with hyperplasia. With a mean follow-up of 54 months, 12 patients are eucalcemic, 5 have persistent hypocalcemia, and 1 has recurrent hypercalcemia. There were no recurrent laryngeal nerve injuries. CONCLUSIONS: These data suggest that an intrathyroidal adenoma is an uncommon cause of failure, whereas abnormal intrathyroidal parathyroid tissue may be a more common cause of failure in patients with hyperplasia.  相似文献

About 80% of all fire fatalities in Germany occur because of fires in homes. It has been known for some time that modern materials (synonym for materials consisting mostly of synthetic polymers) tend to burn differently from older materials (synonym for materials consisting mostly of fibrous cellulosic substances) and it has been acknowledged that the amount of combustible plastics in homes has increased significantly over the last decades. To investigate the influence of modern furniture and ventilation conditions of fires in homes, a series of four large‐scale tests in two living rooms (LRs) with adjacent rooms (ARs) was performed by BAM and the Frankfurt fire service. Two LRs, one with older furniture and one with modern furniture, were tested twice each. Each test started with the ignition of a paper cushion on an upholstered chair. The influence of modern materials on the fire development was investigated, as well as the influence of the ventilation on the fire development. In all settings, an upholstered chair was the first burning item. Results of the test series show that fires in rooms with modern furniture develop faster than fires in rooms with older furniture. This is true for temperature development in the rooms as well as for smoke production.  相似文献

In this work, the properties of yttria-stabilized zirconia-based ceramics, Y-TZP containing Fe2O3 as coloring agent were evaluated. Nanoparticled powder of 3Y-TZP (ZrO2 - 3 mol.% Y2O3) doped with different amounts of Fe2O3 (0.002–0.136 wt%) were compacted into monolithical or multilayered samples and sintered at 1475 °C - 2 h. The samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), relative density, scanning electron microscope (SEM). Hardness and fracture toughness in the color interface were investigated using the Vickers indentation method and the biaxial flexural strength was determined by the piston on 3 balls method (P–3B). Furthermore, optical parameters were measured using spectrophotometry in regard to sample thickness and Fe2O3 content. The results indicated a good adhesion between layers, proven by indentation cracks randomly growing between different regions, because the powders used produced very similar morphological characteristics. The different amounts of Fe2O3 studied in this work did not interfere in densification, phase composition, or microstructure of the sintered ceramics. The fracture toughness and flexural strength did not significantly change due to the addition of Fe2O3, presenting values close to 7 MPa m1/2 and 1120–1150 MPa, respectively, in all studied compositions. On the other hand, increasing Fe2O3 contents lead to an increase in the hardness of the material (1280–1330 H V), and higher contrast ratios (CR) with a consequent loss of translucency. Color variation (ΔE) depended also on the thickness of the material.  相似文献

A case of Blue Rubber Bleb Nevus in a 11 year-old boy is reported. The patient exhibited characteristic hemangiomas of the skin and gastrointestinal tract with an iron deficiency anemia. Historical, clinical, pathological, and surgical features of the condition are discussed. A multidisciplinary group has designed, fabricated, and evaluated an artificial heart. The heart consists of two smooth-surfaced sac-type pumps, two pneumatic power units, and an electronic control system. The artificial heart has been employed in 22 calves. A variety of problems have been encountered and overcome and a significant improvement in pump design has been made. As a result, a gradual increase in survival times has occurred. The last two calves in which the heart was tested lived for 60 and 42 days respectively. These animals ate well and gained weight. The ability of the control system to balance the output of the two pumps over long periods of time and to automatically increase cardiac output with treadmill exercise has been confirmed. No insurmountable problems in the development of the artificial heart have been identified. The date that an artificial heart will be available for clinical use depends on the availability of funds and on the tenacity of the investigators.  相似文献

1. Tissues with raised intracellular Na levels, produced by incubation in K-free media, were used throughout. The uptake of 42K by these Na-loaded tissues was followed for 10 min in the presence and absence of 1-37 X 10(-4) M ouabain, this being sufficient to inhibit Na pumping maximally. Subtraction of the uptake seen in the presence from that seen in the absence of ouabain gave estimates of the pumped ouabain-sensitive K uptake. 2. In Na-free (MgCl2) medium this depended on the [K]0 in a sigmoidal fashion with a half maximal [K]0 for activation of some 4mM. The maximal uptake of K was 3 m-mole/kg.min corresponding to a transmembrane flux of some 12-5 p-mole. cm-2.sec-1. 3. In the presence of Na the K activation curve became more obviously sigmoid and higher concentrations of K were needed to achieve a given active K influx. The results were well fitted by assuming that Na and K competed for two identical, non-interacting sites on the external pump face. 4. Addition of K during the efflux of 24Na into a Na-free (MgCl2) medium led to an increased rate of tracer loss. The magnitude of this increase depended on the [K] used in a hyperbolic fashion and it was abolished by addition of ouabain. The [K] causing half-maximal activation of ouabain-sensitive Na efflux was in the order of 1-2 mM. 5. When the [K] in the uptake media was 1-5 mM; Na, Li, Rb and Cs all inhibited ouabain-sensitive K uptake, the order of effectiveness being Rb greater than Cs greater than Na greater than Li. With a E1TKA10 OF 0-15 MM low concentrations of Cs and Rb were shown to stimulate K uptake. Such an effect is predicted by assuming two ion binding sites on the pump's outer face, and that the pump can translocate mixtures of K and either Rb or Cs...  相似文献
