Successful delayed thrombolytic therapy in a patient with massive pulmonary embolism

Pica is the persistent, culturally and developmentally inappropriate ingestion of non-nutritive substances (DSM-IV). AB is a 75-year-old lady with a 40-year history of schizophrenia and a 20-year history of pica who, at emergency laparotomy, had 175.32 Pounds of loose change in her stomach. Although pica has been reported to coexist with schizophrenia, she had had no positive symptoms of schizophrenia for at least 20 years. She has CT evidence of fronto-tempotal atrophy most marked on the left in the temporal lobe and on the right in the frontal lobe. Pica has been found to be related to cognitive deficits and hyperoral behaviour to temporal lesions. Neuropsychological testing reveals deficits closely related to these changes.     

No detectable bioeffects following acute exposure to high peak power ultra-wide band electromagnetic radiation in rats

A wide range assessment of the possible bioeffects of an acute exposure to high peak power ultra-wide band (UWB) electromagnetic radiation was performed in rats. The UWB-exposure consisted of 2 min of pulsed (frequency: 60 Hz, pulse width: 5-10 ns) UWB (bandwidth: 0.25-2.50 GHz) electromagnetic radiation. Rats were examined using one of the following: 1) a functional observational battery (FOB); 2) a swimming performance test; 3) a complete panel of blood chemistries; or 4) determination of the expression of the c-fos protein in immunohistologically-stained sections of the brain. No significant differences were found between UWB- or sham-exposed rats on any of the measured parameters.     

Evidence of multiple mechanisms of avermectin resistance in haemonchus contortus--comparison of selection protocols

The ginsenosides Rb1 and Rg1, the major components of ginseng saponin, inhibited not only methamphetamine-induced hyperactivity but also conditioned place preference (CPP) in mice following a single or repeated administration. Dopamine (DA) receptor supersensitivity, which developed in methamphetamine-induced CPP mice, was also inhibited by both Rb1 and Rg1. Therefore, the present results suggest that Rb1 and Rg1 may be the active components of ginseng saponin in the modulation of methamphetamine-induced dopaminergic behaviors such as hyperactivity and CPP, supporting our previous conclusion that ginseng saponin might modulate methamphetamine-induced dysfunction at both the pre- and postsynaptic DA receptors.     

The use of nonhomologous scatchard analysis in the evaluation of ligand-protein interactions

Scatchard plots are widely used for the graphical presentation of receptor-ligand binding data. When a combination of labelled and unlabelled ligand molecules is used in a binding assay, equations for Scatchard plots are readily available if the labelled and unlabelled ligands have similar binding affinities. In this article, Everardus van Zoelen, Roel Kramer, Herman van Moerkerk and Jacques Veerkamp present mathematical equations to obtain the binding characteristics of an unlabelled ligand in a Scatchard plot, which has a dissociation equilibrium constant different from that of the labelled ligand used.
