Effects of flux enhancing polymer on the characteristics of sludge in membrane bioreactor process.

A newly developed membrane performance enhancer (MPE) was used to prevent membrane fouling in a membrane bioreactor (MBR) process. It transpired that 1,000 mg/l of MPE reduced polysaccharide levels from 41 mg/I to 21 mg/I on average under the experimental condition. Repeated experiments also confirmed that 50-1,000 mg/l of MPE could reduce membrane fouling significantly and increase the intervals between membrane cleanings. Depending on MPE dosages and experimental conditions, trans-membrane pressure (TMP) increase was suppressed for 20-30 days, while baseline TMP surged within a few days. In addition, MPE allowed MBR operation even at 50,000 mg/l of total solid and reduced permeate COD. However, no evidence of toxicity for sludge was found from respiratory works.     

Dielectric reliability of stacked Al2O3–HfO2 MIS capacitors with cylinder type for improving DRAM data retention characteristics

Dielectric reliability in Al₂O₃(2–3.1nm)–HfO₂(3nm) stack capacitor with Metal–Insulator–Si(MIS) structure is investigated in this paper. We propose an optimized capacitor process through the Time–Dependent Dielectric Breakdown (TDDB) data under various process conditions. Furthermore, due to asymmetric current at both negative and positive voltage stress polarities, we show different lifetime extrapolation by a fluence–driven model. As a result, the maximum allowed operating voltage is projected to be 1.7V (failure rate 10ppm during 10year @ 85°C) for Data “0” retention lifetime.     

Production and structural features of a water-soluble polysaccharide from a mutant strain of Agrobacterium sp.

We have developed a mutant strain derived from Agrobacterium sp. ATCC 31750, which produces a water-soluble polysaccharide having potential utility to the food, feed, pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries. A high concentration of product (15 g/L) is obtained by 48 h cultivation of the mutant strain under optimized fermentation conditions. The water-soluble polysaccharide obtained from cultures of the mutant strain beta82 has Glc:Man:Gal in approximate molar ratios of 5.8:6.7:1.0. The molecular weight of the polysaccharide was determined to be approximately 1000 kDa by HPSEC analysis. Linkage analysis contained 3-Glcp, 3-Manp, terminal Glcp and terminal Manp, as well as a small proportion of 3- and 3,4-Galp, and 4,6-Manp residues. Based on analyses using FT-IR and ¹³C NMR spectrometers, most glycosidic bonds joining these sugar residues are of the α-type, and acetyl groups are apparently attached to the polymer chain at random.     

Preparation of multi-compositional gas sensing films by combinatorial solution deposition

Various compositions of gas sensing films were prepared by the combinatorial deposition of SnO₂, ZnO, and WO₃ sol solutions and their gas sensing behaviors were investigated. The film composition could be manipulated conveniently via the alternate dropping of different oxide sol solutions. From the correlation between film compositions and gas sensitivities, the selective detection of C₂H₅OH and CH₃COCH₃ in the presence of CO, C₃H₈, H₂, and NO₂ could be attained. In addition, the discrimination between C₂H₅OH and CH₃COCH₃, which is a challenging issue due to their similar chemical nature, becomes possible. This research demonstrates the precise design of the sensor-material composition for the selective gas detection via the combinatorial approach.     

Revisiting the need for formal education in visualization.

Defining visualization education is still a work in progress. Visualization education is not just a subject within computer science. Computer scientists are not always the appropriate choice to teach visualization courses on their own. Visualization is not just mastering a set of concepts but acquiring skills. Student should learn by doing, either using one tool or a variety of tools, depending on the course's focus.     

Bat-deafness in day-flying moths (Lepidoptera, Notodontidae, Dioptinae)

Assuming that bat-detection is the primary function of moth ears, the ears of moths that are no longer exposed to bats should be deaf to echolocation call frequencies. To test this, we compared the auditory threshold curves of 7 species of Venezuelan day-flying moths (Notodontidae: Dioptinae) to those of 12 sympatric species of nocturnal moths (Notodontidae: Dudusinae, Noctuidae and Arctiidae). Whereas 2 dioptines (Josia turgida, Zunacetha annulata) revealed normal ears, 2 (J. radians, J. gopala) had reduced hearing at bat-specific frequencies (20-80 kHz) and the remaining 3 (Thirmida discinota, Polypoetes circumfumata and Xenorma cytheris) revealed pronounced to complete levels of high-frequency deafness. Although the bat-deaf ears of dioptines could function in other purposes (e.g., social communication), the poor sensitivities of these species even at their best frequencies suggest that these moths represent a state of advanced auditory degeneration brought about by their diurnal life history. The phylogeny of the Notodontidae further suggests that this deafness is a derived (apomorphic) condition and not a retention of a primitive (pleisiomorphic), insensitive state.     

Effects of cocaine on dopamine receptor gene expression: a study in the postmortem human brain

The effects of chronic cocaine exposure on dopamine D1 and D2 receptor gene expression in the human brain were studied in postmortem samples from chronic cocaine abusing and matched control subjects. Using in situ hybridization of receptor autoradiography to examine messenger ribonucleic acid (RNA) and binding sites, respectively, neither D1 nor D2 receptor expression was found to be changed in the nucleus accumbens, caudate, putamen, or substantia nigra of the cocaine-exposed subjects. Although chronic cocaine exposure can produce alterations in dopaminergic neurotransmission, sustained compensatory changes in dopamine receptor expression do not appear to occur in the human.     

Abnormal selection of antibody repertoires in retrovirus-induced murine AIDS

The mature B cell repertoire in the course of murine AIDS (MAIDS) was investigated. The polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used to amplify a large diversity of rearranged Ig H chain genes in normal or infected mice, 2 and 8 wk after virus inoculation. Libraries were constructed from the polymerase chain reaction products. By sequencing V-D-J clones in these libraries and analyzing the respective complementary determining region 3 (CDR3), we have shown at 8 wk the emergence of a population of B cells with significantly less N diversity, some sequences lacking any N addition, a typical feature of fetal repertoires known for degeneracy, and autoreactivities. This decreased N diversity was not present 2 wk after inoculation and could not be related to a defect in terminal deoxytransferase expression because the steady-state levels of terminal deoxytransferase mRNA were found normal in MAIDS bone marrow 8 wk after inoculation. FACS analyses revealed a decreased number of bone marrow B cells (B220+, sIgM+) in MAIDS already present at 2 wk, suggesting an alteration in the pathway of B cell differentiation and resulting in a decrease of peripheral B cells renewal. A relative enrichment of spleen cells in long lived B cells as a consequence of this blockade may participate in the abnormal antibody repertoire selection occurring in MAIDS. These data suggest in the MAIDS pathogeny the relationship between an abnormal repertoire selection and the pathologic process.
