In this study, the effects of forearm static exercise were determined on local blood flow and oxygen consumption in 15 normal individuals (NL) and their responses were compared with ten patients in congestive heart failure (CHF). Forearm blood flow was determined by a plethysmographic technique before and during 15% of maximum voluntary contraction of the forearm. Regional arterial and venous oxygen contents were sampled and forearm oxygen consumption calculated by the Fick principle. At rest, forearm blood flow was less in patients with heart failure than in normal individuals; however, this was compensated for by an increased oxygen extraction, thus maintaining forearm oxygen consumption at a normal level. In contrast, during static exercise, forearm blood flow failed to rise normally with heart failure (NL 9.31; CHF 4.35 ml/min-100 ml, P less than 0.001) and the increased oxygen extraction was not sufficient to maintain a normal forearm oxygen consumption (NL .82; CHF .44 ml/min-100 ml, P less than 0.01). Therefore, patients with congestive heart failure demonstrate regional circulatory and metabolic abnormalities during static exercise that are comparable to those present during dynamic exercise. Because of a limited ability of their skeletal muscle resistance vessels to respond to dilator stimuli, they have an attenuation of their exercise hyperemia which leads to an earlier shift to anaerobic metabolism. 相似文献

A novel technique based on pulse electroplating and surface treatment with very slow etching rate solutions has been applied to fabricate Au Schottky barriers on GaAs1?xPx and Ga1?xAlxAs. Device characteristics are compared to the behaviour of vacuum-deposited barriers. Air temperature (Ta) is a key variable in many environmental risk models and plays a very important role in climate change research. In previous studies we developed models for estimating the daily maximum (Tmax), mean (Tmean), and minimum air temperature (Tmin) in peninsular Spain over cloud-free land areas using Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data. Those models were obtained empirically through linear regressions between daily Ta and daytime Terra-MODIS land surface temperature (LST), and then optimized by including spatio-temporal variables. The best Tmean and Tmax models were satisfactory (coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.91–0.93; and residual standard error (RSE) of 1.88–2.25 K), but not the Tmin models (R2 = 0.80–0.81 and RSE = 2.83–3.00 K). In this article Tmin models are improved using night-time Aqua LST instead of daytime Terra LST, and then refined including total precipitable water (W) retrieved from daytime Terra-MODIS data and the spatio-temporal variables curvature (c), longitude (λ), Julian day of the year (JD) and elevation (h). The best Tmin models are based on the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) standard product MYD11 LST; and on the direct broadcast version of this product, the International MODIS/AIRS Processing Package (IMAPP) LST product. Models based on Sobrino’s LST1 algorithm were also tested, with worse results. The improved Tmin models yield R2 = 0.91–0.92 and RSE = 1.75 K and model validations obtain similar R2 and RSE values, root mean square error of the differences (RMSD) of 1.87–1.88 K and bias = 0.11 K. The main advantage of the Tmin models based on the IMAPP LST product is that they can be generated in nearly real-time using the MODIS direct broadcast system at the University of Oviedo. 相似文献

PURPOSE: This study aimed to identify a dangerous new weapon capable of causing damage to the ocular and periocular regions. METHODS: The authors report two patients who had penetrating ocular injury in the past year because of homemade recreational potato guns. RESULTS: In one 14-year-old boy, projectiles from the firing of a potato gun resulted in orbital and cranial injuries that were life threatening with widespread fractures, marked disruption of facial structures, a cerebrospinal fluid fistula requiring bifrontal surgical repair, and loss of one eye. In a separate accident with a different potato gun, a 14-year-old boy who was wearing glasses at the time of injury had a sight-threatening perforating corneal laceration. CONCLUSION: Practitioners must be aware of the existence of these new, homemade unregulated devices. Information about the use and construction of these guns is widespread on the Internet, but no injuries resulting from these guns currently are documented in the medical literature. 相似文献

The CTFA Evaluation of Alternatives Program is an evaluation of the relationship between data from the Draize primary eye irritation test and comparable data from a selection of promising in vitro eye irritation tests. In Phase III, data from the Draize test and 41 in vitro endpoints on 25 representative surfactant-based personal care formulations were compared. As in Phase I and Phase II, regression modelling of the relationship between maximum average Draize score (MAS) and in vitro endpoint was the primary approach adopted for evaluating in vitro assay performance. The degree of confidence in prediction of MAS for a given in vitro endpoint is quantified in terms of the relative widths of prediction intervals constructed about the fitted regression curve. Prediction intervals reflect not only the error attributed to the model but also the material-specific components of variation in both the Draize and the in vitro assays. Among the in vitro assays selected for regression modeling in Phase III, the relationship between MAS and in vitro score was relatively well defined. The prediction bounds on MAS were most narrow for materials at the lower or upper end of the effective irritation range (MAS = 0-45), where variability in MAS was smallest. This, the confidence with which the MAS of surfactant-based formulations is predicted is greatest when MAS approaches zero or when MAS approaches 45 (no comment is made on prediction of MAS > 45 since extrapolation beyond the range of observed data is not possible). No single in vitro endpoint was found to exhibit relative superiority with regard to prediction of MAS. Variability associated with Draize test outcome (e.g. in MAS values) must be considered in any future comparisons of in vivo and in vitro test results if the purpose is to predict in vivo response using in vitro data. 相似文献
