Tibial torsion?     
A longitudinal study evaluating the degree of rotation of the bimalleolar axis of tibia and fibula at birth, 6 month, 12 months and 24 months revealed a gradual statistically significant external rotation from a mean of 4 degrees at birth to a mean of 11 degrees at 24 months. There was no correlation with the sex or race of the child or with the age at which the child began independent walking. It is concluded that this external rotation is a part of normal growth and development of the infants' lower extremities.  相似文献

The uni-arterial vascularisation of the lateral bilary duct makes it impossible to systematise the arteries which supply the common bile duct. Only the cystic artery is seen at coelio-mesenteric catheterization. The techniques essential for visualisation of the cystic artery are discussed, on the basis of one hundred coelio-mesenteric arteriograms: frequency of demonstration, origin, course, termination, calibre and length. The frequent finding of opacification of the wall of the gall bladder under normal conditions is stressed.  相似文献

The reduction of arsenic acid with aqueous sulfur dioxide in sulfuric acid solutions is presented. First order kinetics with respect to arsenic acid and sulfur dioxide concentrations are observed. Appreciable reduction occurs only when tetravalent sulfur is present as sulfur dioxide. The protonation of arsenic acid in strong sulfuric acid solutions decreases the rate of pentavalent arsenic reduction.  相似文献

As a step toward defining in molecular terms the sperm-triggered block to polyspermy reaction established by the egg at fertilization, vitelline (VE) and fertilization (FE) envelopes were isolated from eggs of the Sounth African clawed toad Xenopus laevis and some of their physicochemical properties determined. Envelopes were isolated after lysis of the fertilized or unfertilized eggs by sieving techniques; isolated envelopes retained their in situ morphology as determined by electron microscopy. The isolated envelopes had different solubility properties and, in general, VE was more readily dissolved by aqueous solvents than FE, although both could be completely dissolved by detergents or chaotropic agents. Changes in envelope solubility correlated with the progression of the cortical reaction implicating a role for cortical granule material in modifying the solubility properties of the envelope. The VE and FE were composed of protein and carbohydrate with no lipid components detected. As determined by immunodiffusion experiments, the FE contained the same antigens as the VE plus components derived from the cortical granules and the innermost jelly layer, J. The macromolecular composition of the envelopes was determined by sodium dodecyl sulfate gel electrophoresis. The VE contained at least 11 glycoproteins with molecular weights ranging from 125 000 to less than 16 000 with two components (40 000 and 33 000) accounting for almost two-thirds of the total stainable material. The FE contained ten glycoproteins that had the same molecular weights as those in the VE. One glycoprotein component underwent a reduction in molecular weight from 77 000 to 67 500 when the VE was converted to the FE. This molecular weight change was interpreted as the probable result of limited proteolysis. In addition, the FE gel electrophoresis patterns contained macromolecular components derived from the cortical granules and jelly layer, J, consistent with the immunodiffusion experiments. These components were absent when the FE was prepared in the absence of Ca2+, suggesting a role for Ca2+ in binding the VE, cortical granules, and J components together. We concluded that the conversion of the glycoproteinaceous VE to FE at fertilization is caused by interaction of the VE with components from the cortical granules and jelly layer J. These interactions are of both a chemical and physical nature.  相似文献

Hydrostatic pressure effects on whey protein/lactose mixtures were recorded with subsequent analysis of their structural, molecular and glass transition properties in comparison to thermal effects at atmospheric pressure. Experimental techniques used were small deformation dynamic oscillation in shear, modulated differential scanning calorimetry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and theoretical modelling of glass transition phenomena. Levels of solids ranged from 30 to 80% (w/w) in formulations with a protein/co-solute ratio of four-to-one. Addition of lactose protects the secondary conformation of the protein under application of high hydrostatic pressure. Nevertheless, pressurized protein systems are able to form three-dimensional structures due to the reduction in polymeric free volume and the development of an efficient friction coefficient amongst tightly packed particles. Systems can be seen as developing a “molten globular state”, where the structural knots of pressure-treated networks remain in the native conformation but achieve intermolecular cross-linking owing to frictional contact. Furthermore, pressure treated assemblies of condensed whey protein preparations could match the viscoelasticity of the thermally treated counterparts upon cooling below ambient temperatures. That allowed examination of the physical state and morphology of a condensed preparation at 80% solids by the combined framework of reduced variables and free volume theory thus affording derivation of glass transition temperatures for pressurized and atmospheric samples.  相似文献

Enzymatic modification of the endosperm of malting barley is a main feature of the malting process. Uneven enzymatic modification of the endosperm (heterogeneity) can cause brewhouse problems. Although there is a general correlation between endosperm modification, beta‐glucan breakdown and endo‐beta‐glucanase development, it is based on average results from sample analyses and may conceal heterogeneity. The primary aim of this work was to use individual grain analyses to investigate factors that control endosperm modification and beta‐glucan breakdown. In terms of beta‐glucan breakdown and physical modification, the barley variety Chariot malted faster than Decanter. However, both varieties showed similar distribution of endo‐beta‐glucanase in individual grains during malting. Further work on individual grains showed that the correlation between beta‐glucan breakdown and endo‐beta‐glucanase activity was not significant. Surprisingly beta‐glucan breakdown did not always correlate with the physical modification of the endosperm. Both these findings suggest that sample analyses of beta‐glucan levels and malt beta‐glucanase activities are not reliable indicators of the degrees of which malt samples are modified during malting. Since the distribution of beta‐glucan in individual grains of the unmalted barley varieties was similar, the total beta‐glucan levels of the original barley did not determine the rate at which beta‐glucan was broken‐down during malting. Although protein studies are at a preliminary stage, the rate of protein breakdown was not correlated with the rate at which beta‐glucan was broken down in the malting grain. It is possible that the physico‐chemical properties of endosperm storage proteins may limit the rate of beta‐glucan breakdown during malting.  相似文献

Evidence pertaining to the role of dietary factors in carcinogenesis comes from both epidemiological studies and laboratory experiments. In 1982, the Committee on Diet, Nutrition, and Cancer of the National Research Council conducted a comprehensive evaluation of this evidence. That assessment as well as recent epidemiological and laboratory investigations suggest that a high fat diet is associated with increased susceptibility to cancer of different sites, particularly the breast and colon, and to a lesser extent, the prostate. Current data permit no definitive conclusions about other dietary macroconstituents including cholesterol, total caloric intake, protein, carbohydrates and total dietary fiber. Specific components of fiber, however, may have a protective effect against colon cancer. In epidemiological studies, frequent consumption of certain fruits and vegetables, especially citrus fruits and carotene-rich and cruciferous vegetables, is associated with a lower incidence of cancers at various sites. The specific components responsible for these effects are not clearly identified, although the epidemiological evidence appears to be most consistent for a protective effect of carotene on lung cancer and less so for vitamins A and C and various cancer sites. The laboratory evidence is most consistent for vitamin A deficiency and enhanced tumorigenesis, and for the ability of various nonnutritive components in cruciferous vegetables to block in-vivo carcinogenesis. The data for minerals and carcinogenesis are extremely limited, although preliminary evidence from both epidemiological and laboratory studies suggests that selenium may protect against overall cancer risk. Frequent consumption of cured, pickled, or smoked foods, possibly because they may contain nitrosamines or polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, appears to increase the risk of esophageal or stomach cancer, however, the specific causative agents in these foods are not clearly identified. Excessive alcohol consumption among smokers appears to be associated with an elevated risk of cancers of the oral cavity, esophagus, larynx, and respiratory tract. The mechanisms of action of dietary factors on carcinogenesis are poorly understood. The NRC committee, and more recently, the National Cancer Institute and the American Cancer Society have proposed interim dietary guidelines to lower the risk of cancer. These guidelines are consistent with general dietary recommendations proposed by U.S. government agencies for maintenance of good health.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)  相似文献

Gliomas represent a wide spectrum of brain tumors characterized by their high invasiveness, resistance to chemoradiotherapy, and both intratumoral and intertumoral heterogeneity. Recent advances in transomics studies revealed that enormous abnormalities exist in different biological layers of glioma cells, which include genetic/epigenetic alterations, RNA expressions, protein expression/modifications, and metabolic pathways, which provide opportunities for development of novel targeted therapeutic agents for gliomas. Metabolic reprogramming is one of the hallmarks of cancer cells, as well as one of the oldest fields in cancer biology research. Altered cancer cell metabolism not only provides energy and metabolites to support tumor growth, but also mediates the resistance of tumor cells to antitumor therapies. The interactions between cancer metabolism and DNA repair pathways, and the enhancement of radiotherapy sensitivity and assessment of radiation response by modulation of glioma metabolism are discussed herein.  相似文献
